Never did I think I would beat THAT game... let alone expect it to ever be released on the American VC. The game in question is none other than the legendary "gay game," CHO ANIKI. I must say, despite its total fucking batshit weirdness that borderlines on the homoerotic, it's actually a damn good shmup. It plays similar to Gynoug (making sense as Masaya created both), but with hefty doses of crack and speed on top of that. It plays a lot faster, and the game itself is pretty short with five levels, none being too long, but the final level is a DOUCHEFEST. Took me half the game just to beat it, mostly due in part to its infuriating bosses. Thankfully, the game has unlimited continues, so I got to it eventually and kicked its ass.

It's a very fun game that's the epitome of drugs in video game design. How can you not get it? I eagerly await Ai Cho Aniki to be released, arguably the most infamous installment in the series. :D

Is Gradius Rebirth out on Wii as of yet? If so, tell me what you think. All of this Wiiware and VC stuff really tempts me.

^ I don't think it's out. Pretty sure on this one. Mega Man 9 hits on the 24th, though.

Metal Storm (NES)

Pretty fun one, although playing it on my PSP led to a hell of a lot of sprite flickering, annoying d-pad errors, and graphical "meh-ness" to make it a bit more frustrating than it should have been. Good game, although I was pretty disappointed by the last boss. All I did was shoot at three little things without any opposition until they died.

Rebirth came out on the 2nd in Japan, mate, but there's been no word of a Western release at all. Pretty worrying, really. I've no idea how the WiiWare servers work, either; if you imported a Japanese Wii, would you definitely be able to download it?

Yeah, that final fight was a case of GBS (Gradius Boss Syndrome). Coming from Irem, the creators of R-Type which A: Is considered to be one of the greatest shmups ever alongside Gradius, and B: Is a series mired with tough final bosses, I find this somehow ironic.

Image Fight (NES)

Another NES game by Irem! I tried to beat this one months and didn't, because of the damned stage 3 boss with those funky lasers. I found a spot I could sit at and not get hit, and I beat him, this time. Breezed through the rest of the game and had a good bit of fun. How good is the arcade version? Should I play it?

Also, this makes 3/5 of the shmup toys I've beaten their respective game for. Vic Viper, Silver Hawk, R9, Daedalus, and Metarion. I've beaten R-Type, Image Fight, and Gradius, now. I've beaten a few Darius games, but never the first (I don't think I've ever played it), and I haven't beaten the MSX version of Gradius 2 that the Metarion hails from, although I did beat the regular Gradius II on both NES and Arcade.

You know, come to think of it, I might not have ever beaten the first R-Type, too. I'm pretty sure I have, I suppose a replay later today couldn't hurt. I'm 100% sure I've beaten the Game Boy version of it, and both the Game Boy and arcade (PS1) versions of R-Type 2, at least.

Edit:

Holy moly, why are the reviews on GameFAQS so harsh on Image Fight?

Had been into DS lately, so...

Contra 4 - Wicked. Period.

Super Robot Wars W - Nostalgia value.

Etrian Odyssey - Old classic dungeon crawler? Heck yes! Playing the second game at the moment...

Pheonix Wright - Done with two games. Now onto the third.

Side note: I would prefer if anyone can suggest some DS games for me. Best if shmups.

You've already gotten Contra 4, Etrian Odyssey (which I still need to sit down and play more than 30 minutes), and the Phoenix Wright series, so -

Nanostray - I think this is actually the only shmup on the DS, aside from its sequel, Nanostray 2. Nanostray is all vertical (whereas the sequel is also half horizontal) and is actually a pretty fun game (it uses that weird perspective where' you're on a slightly inverted plane, i.e. as you move forward, you become smaller, and the far left and right of the screen can't be all the way traveled to, like the PS2 Silpheed). This game also has astounding graphics for a near-launch DS game (and I really, truly mean astounding) and is also pretty cheap. The sequel has already been marked down, but I haven't picked it up yet.

Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin - That is, provided you don't have it already. This is my personal favorite Castlevania in the "Metroidvania" style. If you're already big on this series, you probably already have it. I suggest skipping Dawn of Sorrow unless you're a big Metroidvania fan, it does nothing new and is extremely redundant and rather boring (not to mention the story, innovation, and artwork are a completely disgrace to its prequel, Aria of Sorrow).

Elite Beat Agents - I know the songs for this game are awful and it's a rhythm and those frequently have limited appeal, but I dislike almost all other rhythm games and the track listing and I still loved this game. It's just a hell of a lot of fun.

Mega Man ZX - Although, the first time, it's not as fun as the Zero games due to an irritating map and new features, it's my favorite out of all the Z/ZX game to replay. Takes a bit of an acquired taste, but I do recommend it. I suggest skipping ZX Advent, though, which was disappointing.

Hotel Dusk: Room 215 - If you like the Phoenix Wright games A LOT, you might find this (and its spiritual predecessor, Trace Memory) a bit of fun. Although I liked this game, I was unfortunately a bit bored by it. The story moves at a snail pace and once you finish it you realize that very little has actually happened, but it does have a good plot and well-written dialogue.

Eh, that's it for now. Since you seem to be into horror games, stay away from Touch the Dead. That game kills my fucking wrist. It's way too hard because of this, you need physical training to beat it.

Add Hokuto No Ken (Original, ultraviolent Fist of the North Star game) to the list. I somehow lucked into a cheat which starts Kenshiro at full strength (7 Stars) and invulnerability. (Though health will still decrease, the health bar will refill instead of killing him.)

This game made it on Seanbaby's 20 Worst NES Games list.

On the Virtual Console, I whomped Final Soldier, a fine game that comes after Super Star Soldier and before Soldier Blade. It's not quite as uber-cool as those two, but I still highly recommend it.

Bokosuka Wars. (NES) I thought the Game Over screen was insulting, but the Game Won screen is even worse.

Mega Man 9

Many, many times. My opinion on it has lightened up quite a bit.

Shockman

Aka Schbibinman 2. Lots of fun, way better than I initially gave it credit for. I was looking over a currently playing thread on another forum from a year or two ago where I said it was way too hard and that I'd never beat it. In all honesty, it wasn't that hard. I guess I've just gotten better.

I think that's it. I forget if there was a third.

Echochrome (PS3)

Lots of fun with the puzzles, although the game gets a bit repetitive and boring after a while. Very fun to sit down and play in short bursts (the mode where you endlessly play through user created levels is great), but not nearly as fun during long sittings.

Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts (VC/SNES)

Finally decided to go and beat this one, and it took a little while, but I did it. Definitely not the hardest game I've beaten, but it does rank a fair bit up there. Was harder than the arcade Ghouls 'n Ghosts, but, for me, anyway, not as fun. Still liked it quite a bit, though, I'm currently debating on whether or not I want to play the original or that PSP sequel.

Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia (DS)

Impressions already posted in another thread.

Dead Space (360)

I honestly believe this is the only EA game I've ever played that is actually good. And it's really good. Combines RE4's gameplay with Doom 3's atmosphere and throws a fairly reasonable level of uniqueness into the combination. My only real complaint about this one is that the last 30 minutes are batshit insane amounts of confusing and I've looked all over the internet for an explanation and haven't found one. There's one guy telling me that if I pay close attention, it will make sense, but I think he might just be full of shit, considering everywhere I look I can't find anything more than a theory or two.
