Any list that doesn't include Splatterhouse on it is clueless (granted, it's the UK, where two of them weren't released, but still...) |

Yes, but I dunno if Splatterhouse is scary. Just gruesome and violent. Fun stuff though. Putting RE4 and HL2 about Silent Hill, Fatal Frame, AND Resident Evil is really stupid though. |

....I guess it's all relative. The only games that really scared me to the point of freak-out would have to be the first two Resident Evils, the first Silent Hill (part 2 may be the best, but 1 was more frightening), and the underrated but utterly chilling Siren. There are several disturbing games, due to subject matter, approach or out-and-out grisliness, but in terms of scary, those are the only ones to really do the trick for me. And Splatterhouse was always just so rad to me that I transcended fear and coasted on a sheer high of awesome. |

I think Chiller freaked me out more than most games. :lol It's sad that RE is gradually losing the horror and moving into suspense. |

Did anyone read that all of these choices were user-voted? That blows my mind. Some of these choices are pretty decent ones, but others are just "what the hell?" Doom 3 in the number 1 spot? Half-Life 2 and the first DooM on the list at all? Jeezy peezy. Edit: Who the hell is that in their screenshot for Resident Evil? I can't recognize the character (I've played 0, 1, 2, 4, and CV) and I know the screenshot can't be from the first game like it's supposed to be because they're fighting policemen zombies. Is it an Outbreak character? |

It's from Dead Aim, character goes by the name Bruce McGivern. And aye, some of the choices were good, but I don't think the balance is so good going up, some games in there were way better than the ones that were supposed superior to them, according to the sequence. Project Zero should of won IMO, easily the scariest game I've played in a long time. It was interesting to see Thief: Deadly Shadows on there though, the Shalebridge Cradle part was pretty awesome, the build up was neat. System Shock 2 on there, damn that's one title I've wanted to play for quite awhile now, I'll have to look into picking it up from somewhere... |

True to a point, but besides the first 'dog jumping through a window' scene in the first RE, I've never been scared or startled by a vid game. To me these days, 'scare' in popular culture (for me at least) is defined by the haunted house 'scare'-something that is bizarre, bloody, gross, startling, or unsettling and that makes people uncomfortable, thrilled, or amazed. I mean, DOOM and Alien Vs Predator scary? Fatal Frame, Kuon (no, not Juon), or Clock Tower not mentioned? In the Haunted House industry, despite what you read in the ads, it's a well known fact that an attraction that actually SCARES people (as opposed to startling or grossing out) will very soon be out of business. Virtually no one would ever return to it, as virtually no one truly enjoys REAL fear. |

They wouldn't know the scariest game if they got it for Christmas. It's painfully obvious that they never played Action 52. |

System Shock 2 sounds suspiciously alot like ALIEN. I wonder if the first one is like that too. Anyway, I'd really like to play that game just from reading about it. I think that the tops of course are RE1, 2, 3, Silent Hill 1, 2, and 3. Nothing is scarier than being helpless in a situation that you can't control. Both series do that very well. |

... The less said about that list, the better. (Who chose the number 1?) The only ones there that gave me the chills was Project Zero (Scariest game ever IMO) and to a lesser extent, Resi 1 and Silent Hill (More about the atmosphere with those.) But where's Forbidden Siren? Or Clock Tower? Or Eternal Darkness? |

I still think they should rerelease Siren on PS2 with subtitles this time and a physical document of the stuff on the Japanese website translated. The translation killed a lot of what made the game good beforehand. |

Yeah there were a few translation errors in Fatal Frame as well but overall still a great series of games. One day I hope to have all the Fatal Frame games in my possesion. |

Indeed. And I have to say the first Clock Tower, for the SNes, does a number on me much more than the sequel. 'course though, CT2 is not without it's good moments. Whenever fucking Sciss's comes down breaking a fucking window or jumping out of the locker room... But I think in atmosphere the first game is unparalled by any entry further down the series. |

....I'm always paranoid Scissor Man is gonna see my goddamned cursor andknow my character's in the room! And straight Rodrigo, that first SNES 'Tower is an unheralded classic. HUGE Argento vibe goin' on in that flick! And my money says the movie's gonna suck ass. |

No, it's this cat called "Jorge Olguin", but I heard that it was in production in 2006. I don't think it'll ever see the light of day, and every new synopsis directly contradicted the others given and shit like that.
Yeah, they basically took two of his most fucked-up stories, spiced it up with supernatural shit and blew our pants away. And for a 16-bit system what it achieves is pretty impressive. Also: Mary. Fucking Mary Barrows. Motherfucker. |

The game could've been a comedy. They try their damnedest to be quiet when they do something and end up accidentally making all kinds of ungodly racket.
Didn't know you had a milf fetish, Rodrigo. |

To be perfectly frank, there's a saying in Brazil that goes like "Old frying pans are the ones that make the best food". But not to the age of Ms. Barrows, thank you very much. :lol When I first waltzed through the game I obviously got a bad ending. When I made it to that fucking 2nd floor and Mary was standing there after I had given ham to cannibal Simon and he said who he was I figured she'd have a fundamental place in shit hitting the fan, even I happened not to know the full scoop (ominous lightning throwing her silhouette just adding to that). Yet Jennifer goes like "ooooh Ms. Mary". And I'm like "YOU FUCKING DUMB BITCH GET BACK HERE" *HORROR sting; STABBED* "GOD FUCKING DAMN IT". Then I'm "Alright, I still got the save on the elevator room, let's see what happens if I go to the third floor... 3rd... alright... who the fuck cut out the poweFUCK YOU YOU MOTHERFUCKING QUASIMODO, I WANT ALL OF YOUR BALLS TO DIE! YOU HEAR ME?! I WANT ALL OF YOUR BALLS TO DIE!". *terror sting, credits roll* DEAD END "SON OF A BITCH!" And then I get the better endings and see how I was on to something with that last statement. |

I wanted to play the original, and I had the translation patch and everything. Never got around to it, though. The First Fear is one of my playstation imports, too. |

If you're having an uneventful day (or even better, night) I highly recommend it. If the First Fear version wasn't plagued by slowdowns and one element that was omitted from the SNes release that actually made it better it'd be the ultimate version of the first game, for sure. Unfortunately, the translation patch corrupts one closeup of a certain object you might stumble on your ventures through the mansion... |
