So... Any of the T3M members who can read Japanese, have any of you played any of the NES Ninja Ryukenden games?

If so, have you noticed any differences in the plots from the Ninja Gaiden games? Thanks in advance.

I've been curious about how much got left out or modified in so many late 80's/early 90's games ever since Sgraff, Rodrigo_Shin and Felipe's massive amount of work towards translating the Splatterhouse manuals and other things.

Woah woah, I didn't do any translating on that essay. I only did that analysis which was just studying and personal opinions.

Though I might be mistaken, I think there were a few differences between japanese and english plots to Super Mario Bros. The english plot to the first game had some differences. From what I can remember, the japanese plot involved Bowser trapping the mushroom people into coins rather than the english version which says they were turned into blocks. The japanese also adds that only Princess Peach was the one able to break the curse. Creating more motive to the story.

I will have to recheck this stuff.

EDIT: the only other to come to mind is the original Bionic Commando. The whole Nazi deal.

That may be so, but didn't you translate a few enemy lists from another source?

Thanks for the input. Truth be told, I never even knew that aspect of the storyline at all until now (What happened to the inhabitants of the Mushroom Kingdom).

On a side note, the Turbografx-16 version of Ninja Ryukenden had a hidden option to actually change the dialogue from Japanese to either English or Chinese. I only wish that were available for the Ninja Gaiden series and other games.

The only case I remember people making a notice that was changed was in Ninja Gaiden 3. The boss for stage 6, the spider-like creature you fight in the backdrop you keep falling through, is said to be Foster in the US release, whereas in Ryukeiden it's Ryu's clone, again, morphed into another form.

There's also the whole schpiel on Mega Man ~ Rockman, such as with Light and Wily being partners, while originally they were only rivals. Some characterizations also changed, particularly Sunstar/Sungod and Mega Man 7's ending almost turning 180º with Rock threatening to kill Wily.

In Mega Man X2, there were many allusions of Serges being some sort of successor to Wily, but all of that was cut out in the US release. The gamebooks for it just added fuel to the fire, and it's been recently confirmed by Inafune himself that Wily's around "because of the Virus" in the X series.

One thing that always baffled me was the intro to the first game. A friend raised this question in the past, but there doesn't seem to be any answer. Who is the black/gray ninja in the intro to the first Ninja Gaiden and all its ports?

"With whom did father have a duel and lose..." indeed. Later on we find out that Bloody Malth is the one who "killed" Ryu's father, so is the myserious ninja just supposed to represent the fact that Ryu has no idea who killed his father (The equivalent of showing a character who resembles a walking silhouette in a flashback scene)? Or was Malth meant to have form-altering abilities ala Himuro Gemma of Ninja Scroll, but that plot point was scrapped?

I've been under the impression for almost two decades now that the grey ninja is indeed Malth.

I'm figuring the grey ninja is just to save cartridge space since he's just a pallete-swap of Ryu's father (and cutscene-wise Malth has what, two poses), and if you want to go for a plot reason to simbolize Ryu didn't have any idea of who killed his father either.
