Console help; PS2 disc load issue

I have a (fat) PS2 w/ HDAdvance. The HDA disc usually loads and I can load games from the hdd but sometimes it will not recognize the disc, doesn't recognize it as a PS2 disc or just plain doesn't load. It never loads any game discs, CD or DVD.

I have tried adjusting the eye through its full non-contact range w/ no noticeable results. I have found a little bit of help by searching but I don't want to join another forum and nothing has worked so far. If anybody here flames me I can just ban you and your ISP's entire IP range.

Any help?

The old fat PS2's had some laser eye defects that made them pretty faulty. Sony was forced by a class action lawsuit to offer free repairs for some odd number of years because of this. It sounds like it's dying and I'm afraid there's not much you can do. When I was at my friend's place in Pennsylvania, last year, this happened to his and he ended up just having to get a new one (he had a modded PS2 to play back-up games). He used to repair consoles, too.

Sorry :(

It's no fun if you warn them first.

I bet the laser eyes weren't the only defect in those things. My brother's didn't work for a whole year before it stopped playing games altogether. He just threw it out and hasn't bought Sony since. I don't want to imagine the headaches accessories would have caused.

Well, there's this:

http://arstechnica.com/gaming/guides/2003/...epair-guide.ars

I've had to mess about opening up and cleaning my Ps2 a great many times in the past. I found that sometimes little hairs and crap would get trapped around the laser, they were very hard to spot too. After a thorough and careful cleaning (very careful, especially with the top lid) it'd play everything before screwing up about a month or so later.

Not much of a surprise really. My Ps1 died kinda similar. I've been planning on getting one of those slim Ps2's at some stage.

The PS2 is often notorious for its Disc Read Error problems. I went through two large models before finally getting a slimline, with which I have had no problems up to today. I don't know jack-diddly about repairs, so I don't have much to offer when it comes to fixing your machine. :(

It might just be a better idea to spring for a used PS2 if you find one for not too much; averaging prices of old and new over at Amazon, they're approximately $100. Now if you can get a reliable repair that's less than that, go for it. Otherwise, I'm not a techie, and I can't say much else for help; only that you have my sympathies as someone else who has had problems with this shit before.

A bit late to be posting this, but the folks here did a good job with mine when I sent it to them:

http://www.fixmyplaystation.com

Their website is really generic-looking, but they did a good job, like I said.

I got one of those free repairs back in the day... and it wasn't even *my* PS2.

My brother gave me his old broken one and I called their 800 Number and talked my way into the free repair...

My guess is that by now the free repair program has probably been discontinued... but it couldn't hurt to ask.

Thanks for the help, all. I found somebody who can load up my memory card w/ boot software and my neighbor who sold me the fat one is selling my his slim PS2 and all his remaining hardware + lending me games for less than I would pay for a repair or new laser.

That happened to me at one time, and my PS2 eventually bit the dust. The fact that I tried to fix the problem manually only sped up its demise. I followed the instructions of a PS2 repair site closely, but not closely enough, and as a result, it not only didn't want to read any discs, but it didn't even want to turn on. After saving up enough cash, I ended up buying a slim model.
