Damn, this game is really fun. I was expecting something really uninspired to come out of this, especially considering it was outsourced, but I very strongly believe that the people working on it were intimately familiar with the source material and most/all of its history. It shows in just about every way possible, really.

While the game is a bit short, there's enough love packed into it to more than justify dropping a measly 10 dollars on it. Although the graphics are a step down from a game as great-looking as Gaiden, that doesn't stop the game from managing to look as good and resemble Gradius as much as possible. The colors are bright and vivid and the environments are every bit as detailed as you'd expect. The music for the game fits perfectly and is largely (if not entirely) new versions of old songs.

There are enough references to the old mixed with the new that I don't feel the game is nearly as stale as Gradius IV. The game really plays like top notch Gradius, and actually adds a lot of replay value by making enemy formations and actual stage geometry change on later loops (there's also a weather changing device allowing for 3 different versions of the first stage), too. It does a very good job of preventing the game from getting stale, as do the two additional, unlockable ships (the second of which is very awesome).

If I had to criticize the game, the only really bad thing I think I'd say about it is that it is a bit short. If they would have had a boss rush stage and maybe a jungle stage, it would have been the perfect length. That said, however, the length does also work in its favor for score attack, making sitting down and seeing how far you can get (or how many loops you can go) a lot of fun.

The game feels like, to me, a long lost Gradius sequel for the SNES that would have been released near the end of the console's lifespan. It fits into the series so well that I think you'd have a very hard time finding a Gradius fan who wouldn't like it.

Anyway!

I'm No. 1 on the Very Hard leaderboards, right now, and No. 3 on the Normal (by far the most active) leaderboards. I would have been No. 1 on Normal if I hadn't choked really hard on the last stage of the second loop :p.
