Something that I have been thinking of doing for a long time as some sort of hobby, creating my own videogame. The problem is: Which programs are most user friendly and also very effective? Beyond that, it is also interesting to see some games being modded into different games. My personal goal is to make a Splatterhouse fangame, but this thread should not be focused just on me, but the subject of game making in general. Throughout the years I have dabbled in RPG maker, Multimedia Fusion, and Gamemaker. Any other suggestions? |

I find the games factory to be pretty useful. |

I'd second a recommendation of The Games Factory. It's an evolution of Klik & Play, a point & click interface driven, Windows-based games creator I used to use all the time. Very easy to get the hang of using, but with a reasonable amount of flexibility and power beneath its user-friendly surface. |

Isn't Multimedia Fusion 2 just thegamesfactory but more advanced? It's kinda hard to say since MMF and Gamemaker 7 are similar but it seems that GM7 can make 3d games such as DOOM clones pretty well. I suppose I should decide on what sort of game I would like to make first. I think some of the main problems is learning how to create the game, as well as create art for it. I kinda work better in teams I suppose. |

You also want to consider which engine you're most comfortable with. I've been using Game Maker for years and highly recommend it to amateur game designers like myself (though if you've been using Game Maker, you already know what to expect from it). There's lots of tutorials and examples online for it, too. If you're gonna make an SH fangame, I'd suggest going a route that hasn't been tried yet to make yours stand out. Keep it simple, too, or the project will overwhelm you pretty quick. |

Yeah I have tried GM7 for a bit but I never actually got a grasp of what exactly can be done with it. So what kinds of fangames has there been? FPS, RPG, Beat-em-up... What else could I try? It might help to find an engine that I can modify. |

Maybe Gauntlet-style bloody chaos? I always wanted to see an SH game like that. The GM engine can do pretty much anything, from what I've seen. But if you want a creator you can modify, you'd probably be better off programming your own (which would take forever....) I think the best thing to do is decide what genre you'd like to play with most and find the engine best suited to it. My friend is a huge RPG guy and he uses the RPG Maker engines (I'm a veteran with them, myself: easy and fun to use). |

By engine I mean a game that I can modify, not the program itself. Isn't the gauntlet idea essentially an action RPG? If so, then yeah I did want to make a similar game at some point. I can either use GM7 or RPG maker. I have seen people make RPG maker scripts such as this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f7SotgdE824 I consider myself pretty good at pixel art, so chances are that I would draw the graphics myself. But as I have mentioned, when it comes to scripts I tend to get fustrated. |

I was thinking about Gauntlet's perspective and frantic gameplay specifically, but using RPG elements might make it interesting too. Here's my latest hobby project. No idea when it'll be finished, but it's showing potential despite moron enemy AI. Posted Image Posted Image Posted Image Posted Image Posted Image It practically programmed itself, it all came out so easily in the beginning. Level design and making enemies smarter are proving the most difficult parts. All the art is by me, of course. Except the fonts. I may use this engine and sprite base for a thrown-together splatterhouse thing to inspire others to make their own projects. Caught a rocket in the teeth to end the screenshot session with a bang. Heh. |

It also looks like there is a program called Zelda Classic which well, lets you make LOZ games in the classic kind of way. More like Link's Awakening than anything. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=waHFSZSLKFk |

I'm almost finished with Mean Two-Fisted Biomech. Changed quite a bit since those screenshots, including several awesome splash screens and cutscenes I added this week. After a few more tweaks to the game and manual it'll be good to go. My only regret is that it has no music: just an ambient soundtrack. Hey Rob, if your buddy is up to it and registers himself a copy of Game Maker 6, I can send him the engine for Biomech and you can revive your fan project as a top-view splatfest. How about it? |

Just as long as you keep those character sprites. They remind me of Ikiki's games, also known as Jesus. Fuck yeah, I wanna play this. |

Don't worry, those haven't changed. They're kinda cute when they're animated too. :smug Thanks for the compliment, too! I love Ikiki's stuff. |

Darnit, I just tried to make a pretty complex opening level on gamesfactory and it fucked up royally. This is the tenth time this has happened. Fuck it, I'm getting multimedia fusion. |

Sice I could use a pc, yeah. I had a load of games on my old PC that I made, some of which (like Minotaur and Shaun Of The Dead; The Game!) were pretty boss, but I can't draw sprites for shit. I made I killer game called UNDEAD! in which you are the zombie, which I guess I could upload. I made it out of pre-existing sprites on the games factory, but it's a fun little time-waster. I was working on the sequel which RULED, and had Zombies ate my neighbours sprites and a trash metal soundtrack, when GF fuckerd up, none of the levels connected to each other, whenever you exit a level the thing crashes. haven't been making games for a while, more focusing on finishing a film script right now. But someday... |

Thanks! Game Maker 6. Most people use 7 nowadays, but if I switch to 7 I won't be able to do anything with my GM6 projects anymore. It was coming along swimmingly until I started looking into giving it a better sound system. I'd like it to have a trippy soundtrack and not take forever to load on startup, but the sound systems that can do that for me are impossibly to learn. At the moment its final form is undetermined. |
