There are three categories of games in this world. The first are the fun games that everyone likes to play. Then, there are the badly conceived games that suck. And finally, there are games that are confusing as hell, and damn good reasons not to misplace the instruction manual. Today, we're looking at the third category. Not just the old school, but some of the newer ones, as well. I'll start you off with a couple. Romance of the Three Kingdoms-Koei has made a strategy game based on the historical events of late 2nd-early 3rd Century China. It has spawned several sequels over all the consoles I can think of, but God help you if you lose the manuals, because the games won't. Overlord for the NES-Virgin Games' space war simulator is apparently a predecessor to Starcraft. I never got an instruction manual with this game, so I don't know what in God's name I'm doing. I may sound like an uneducated boob, but seriously, things like this are the reason that most games come with built-in tutorials, nowadays. SwordQuest-Atari's original RPG with instruction manuals made by DC Comics. One of the first cases of, "If you lose the manual, you're fucked." Any you can think of? |

Well I know that in StarTropics for the NES at one point you get to use a submarine but you have to enter the code which happens to be in the game manual only. So if you rented it, you were screwed if they didn't have the manual...I had to call a friend who had it to give me the code. |

Oh lets not forget about those PC games with the protection built in that would ask for a certain word on a certain page of the manual to play. Thank you Civilization 2 |

ROLLING KOPPU KICK!

The first thing I thought of was Nobunaga's Ambition, which is basically RoTK in Japan. My brother and I discovered how to play without a manual, and play it often now (we own the latest two installments released in America too!) but we still don't even know what some of those icons mean! |

The PTO series of games from Koei. I think we're starting to see a trend of 'Koei' games and sim games in particular. |

I actually sold the original Final Fantasy when I was a little'un, just because I couldn't understand it and I kept getting my ass kicked at the first boss. :x As for a more modern one that baffles me... Steel Battalion. Oh my christ, Steel fucking Battalion. :banghead :banghead :banghead |

ROLLING KOPPU KICK!

This. When I first played Smash-TV it was on a computer with Z,X,A,S,C,D as B,Y,A,X,L,R and it... made no sense to me. I later figured it out though, don't worry. |

Saw some good examples, but I think I can come up with a couple more. Liberty or Death-From what I understand, this Koei game plays similarly to Romance of the Three Kingdoms and Nobunaga's Ambition. And understandably so, as it was made in the same manner. Only instead of the Three Kingdoms Era of China or the Warring States Era of Japan, you play in the Revolutionary War. Like the previously mentioned Koei games, it can be tricky, especially without the book. But unlike those games, I really doubt you'll see George Washington or Sir Henry Clinton fighting in a Warriors Orochi-style game. Out of This World-The premise is simple. Try to find a way back home after a freak storm hits a lab, sending you to a foreign universe. What's tough about it, though, is managing to survive under pressuring conditions. Sure, it's part of the challenge, but with or without the manual, chances are you're going to die at least a billion times before you beat this game. |

Oh man, I still can't believe I beat Out of This World. I think I had to look up an FAQ at a few points, but even knowing what to do, it could be really hard to do it. Fine game, though. I recently acquired Flashback for the SNES, also developed by Delphine Software, and I think it's a bit less obtuse than OoTW, but still can be a bitch to figure out what to do. Hell, I didn't know how to get out of the first level. I'll try again later, though. |

Litttle bit of trivia, Out of This World is developer Suda51's (Killer 7, No More Heroes) favorite game. |
