When you hear the words Corpse Monger, and dream video game adaptation, your first thought is probably going to be Splatterhouse. And...you're right. I'd kill to have some hand in bringing that to the screen. A close second might be Castlevania, but I'm just holding out hope that Guillermo Del Torro wakes up one day and realizes that it's his life's calling. But for years, I've held another dream video game project close to my heart. Yes...Super Mario Brothers. I know, I know....we already had a SMB movie. Actually, I respect what they were trying to do with that movie. It had a lot going for it; it it weren't for stupid shit like the Supa Coopa Cousins, the suicide-inducing night club sequences, or the whole prehistoric concept, there might have been a really cool, insane movie there. But I have a different vision for where such a film could go. So....what would I do with the property? Let's start with the proposed people involved. For Mario, I cast Jack Black. He is, quite simply, perfect. You don't really need to think about it....it just...is. Posted Image For Luigi, I have a sinlge soul in mind who could do the character justice...Crispin Glover. I don't know why, but he was the first and only choice in my mind, and I'll go to my grave before I see this project come to light without him as Luigi. Posted Image Ah, but who directs? For this heady task, I nominate Tarsem Dhandwar, director of the visually astonishing The Cell. His lush, surreal style is PRECISELY what I'm after for my take on SMB (and for the record, Vincent D'Onofrio here would make a perfect Bowser). Posted Image As for creature/production design, I vote Jhonen Vasquez, creator of Invader Zim, and more importantly Johnny The Homicidal Maniac, which he created & illustrated back in the 90s. His adorable yet oddly menacing & bizarre style is pitch perfect for where I'm going. Posted Image The score would be provided by undergound techno smash Figurine. I've provided the perfect link below. Just tune out the detatched, weirdo Gary Numan-esgue vocals, and you'll see what I mean. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8QY0RH9nlc Now, you ask with a sneer, what's the perverted hook? What's the Corpse Monger, demented take on the material? Simple. To do it exactly like the game. That's psychotic enough. Simply put, it's Alice In Wonderland smack in the middle of a civil war, with technicolor visuals like Terry Gilliam on an acid binge. If I ever win the lottery....expect to see this at your local multiplex. That's not a threat...it's a promise. |

I am sure if Jim Henson was still alive, his studio and himself could create the SMB creatures and bring them to life in a way that CGI could not. Then again I always found movies like Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal to be quite inspiring when I was young. |

Interesting blueprint, I'll say that. I like the idea of Crispin Glover as Luigi. I woulda never considered him. And if it's done like The Cell, that would be an awesome visual experience. Bowser would likely have to be a cgi/puppet monstrosity. That said, what about James Woods? |

I'm thinking they could mo-cap the hell out of the terror that is Vincent D'Onofrio with the technology they emplyed to turn Andy Sirkis into Gollum. Woods isn't a bad choice if D'onofrio is too busy killing someone that month. This will play over the end credits. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ys3oP7Ax6nM |

Does anyone here know how to do animatics? I'm at a point where I'm thinking I need to cut together a rudimentary trailer. |

Having a brother who went to Tom Savini's special effects school for a few years, I cannot say it's easy. But I do not know much about it personally. The way a lot of the monsters in Super Mario looks, I would suggest hands to move the mouth and strings or sticks to move limbs. With giant creatures such as bowser, a suit which is worn and moved by a person and an animatronic head. |

Wooo, not animatronics, my good man...I'm not THAT ambitious! Naw, Animatics are those not-quite-animated thingamajigs wherein you take a bunch of story boards and show them at a semi-rapid pace, with voiceovers & music, to get a primitive idea of what a trailer might look like. Your bro went to the savini school? That's fuckin' ace!!! |
