I know there are many great power-ups in many great games, and some rather useless ones in some games. But this time, I'm gonna tell you about the dark side of collectibles in these games. They are known as, "Power-Downs." Sonic the Hedgehog series. Power-Down: Robotnik Monitor. In Sonic 3, Sonic & Knuckles, and the Sonic 2 Vs. game, some monitors will feature Dr. Robotnik's face. Crack open one of those and your shield will disappear. If you don't have a shield, your rings are going all over the place. And if you have neither, you can kiss a life good-bye. The Legend of Zelda-Phantom Hourglass. Power-Down: Rupoor. While red, green, blue, and other-colored rupees add to your money, black rupees, AKA rupoors, take it away, and also cause Link to make a funny constipated face to a distorted version of the "item collect" tune. It doesn't really harm you, but if you get one in a dungeon, a Phantom may appear to make your life tough. Dragon Quest. Power-Downs: Cursed Belt and Death Necklace. In the one that started it all, if you get one of these and decide to equip it, you're stuck with it for a while. The guards of Tantegel Castle hate cursed people, and won't let you in, which means you can't save until that pesky curse is lifted. Fortunately, in Brecconary, there is a guy who can remove the curse. Superman. (NES) Power-Downs: Red and green Kryptonite. This game sucks, and part of what contributes to that is that when you beat a character, sometimes, they'll throw something. The blue Kryptonite is safe enough to collect, as it gives you a little energy. However, the red and green Kryptonite will weaken you. And those are the two most commonly thrown items. Any you can think of? |

Yeah, the Japanese Mario 2 had poison mushrooms, in addition to warps that took you to PREVIOUS worlds. RISE OF THE TRIAD The Mushroom Powerup If I remember right, grabbing this thing screwed up your aim and made random game objects flash psychedelic colors. DOOM The Blur Sphere, which makes you partially invisible Intended Benefit: Enemies have a hard time aiming at you, so most of their shots narrowly miss you and probably hit their comrades instead. Maybe when you're standing still this is helpful. But if you've ever played Doom, you already know that "standing still" is at the bottom of your list of common activities...and nowhere near a viable survival tactic. What It Actually Does: Transforms linear, dodgeable projectiles into unpredictable scatterfire. It's like this power-up temporarily educates the enemies on how to hit a moving target: instead of aiming at your last known position, they aim in your general vicinity, so half the time they actually lead you like a hunter with an elk in his sights. Given the sheer number of monsters gunning for you in Doom, grabbing the Blur Sphere can potentially end a game. |

A couple more I thought of. Castlevania series. Power-Downs: Spoiled foods, Animata (Toadstool in SOTN.). When you eat food in a Castlevania game, usually, you'll get health back. However, if you chow on some rotten meat, moldy bread, rotten durian, spoiled milk, or animata, your health will plummet. Using the Flesh Golem or Ghoul Soul in the Castlevania: Sorrow series (Depends on the game), however, will reverse that effect, which can come in handy when you've got a bunch of those stockpiled. Legacy of the Wizard. Power-Down: Poison. In a game where almost every monster drops something when beaten, this is the sole power-down in the game. Characterized by its skull-shaped bottlecap, the poison steals a little life from whoever is careless (or brave) enough to take it, as its name would suggest. Dark Cloud. Power-Downs: Poisonous Apple, Gooey Peach, Throbbing Cherry. (Insert horny virgin joke here.) Not intended for human consumption, eating any one of those will inflict you with a status condition. Poison for the Poisonous Apple, Goo for the Gooey Peach, Freeze for the Throbbing Cherry. Fortunately, all those fruits can also be used as weapons that will inflict the status condition on enemies. In addition, eating the Throbbing Cherry when frozen will reverse the effect. |

All I feel like adding to this is Parodius' "Roulette" feature, on the Power Meter. You can have full power, get Roulette, and then have jack shit. Randomly. That's just cheap, because Parodius games can be equal in difficulty to Gradius games. At least the Option Hunter in the later Gradius games can be avoided. Get Roulette in Parodius and you might as well just turn the game off. |

Taz in Escape from Mars "Also, there are various power-downs as well that take one hit point away. The most common of which are small black bombs. Others include a time bomb, and a cake with dynamite. When eaten, the object explodes making Taz lose one hit point and become black momentarily." |

Another one I thought of fairly recently. Bonk series. Power-Down: Venus Bonk Trap. There are many flowers in the game, and while most of them will give you food or a much-needed boost in jumping, there are a few that will actually will try to kill you. They are known as Venus Bonk Traps. The good news is that when they're headbutted again, they will die. So be quick, be careful, and you should be ok. |
