Games With Unhappy Endings; spoilers galore!

We all know that the original Splatterhouse doesn't have a happy ending: Rick only half-succeeds in his quest to get Jennifer and himself out of the house with their heads intact, and in all probability he loses his mind shortly afterward. It's rare even nowadays for a videogame to provide an ending that crushes the player's morale, but it has happened on occasion. And I find it to be a breath of fresh air!

The purpose of this thread is to list all the games we know that have unhappy endings. Games with multiple endings do not count unless every single ending involves irrevocably screwing the hero over. So no Splatterhouse 3, Simon's Quest, Twisted Metal, or games like that.

Due to the obvious spoilers involved, anyone who would rather see game endings for themselves should stop reading this thread now. You may be playing something that ends up on this list, and just knowing it has an unhappy ending is a spoiler in itself.

------

Killing Time (3DO Multiplayer)

The plot: In the Roaring Twenties, heiress Tess Conway invited her social circle to her island estate for a party, mainly to ogle an Egyptian waterclock her gangster boyfriend illegally procured for her, which supposedly had the power to grant everlasting life. You are an archaeology student who's come to the island to find out why everyone on the island suddenly disappeared. Basically Tess pissed off her boyfriend and got killed, but not before using the waterclock to curse the island and turn everyone into undead monsters. You can't leave the island until you lift the curse, which requires you to gather the canopic jars containing Tess's essence, reassemble her spirit, and free her by destroying the waterclock.

The ending: When you finally succeed, you learn Tess lied to you. The curse isn't lifted at all, but thanks to you reassembling her essence she can become a god. She celebrates by dragging the island into hell....and you with it.

------

Codename: Tenka (PS1)

The plot: A corporate entity has been tricking people into ditching earth and moving to a thriving new planet so they can be killed and turned into cyborg monsters called bionoids. You, Tenka, were almost completely turned into one when a lady calling herself Zenith had you set free so you can run around the corporate office doing odd jobs for her, most of which involve screwing up the corporation's agenda. Zenith never tells you why she wants you to do any of this crap, and it doesn't matter because you're compelled to do what she says. You're a means to an end, and even though Zenith keeps promising your purpose will become clear, it never does.

The ending: ...because when you've finished your job destroying the corporation's plan, she disposes of you. You wouldn't adjust well to civilian life as a bionoid anyway.

------

Earthworm Jim (Sega Genesis)

The plot: A Super Mario scenario complete with an ugly monster of a villain and a hostage princess who must be rescued.

The ending: What sets this one apart from other save-the-princess games is the moment you find her she's crushed by an airborne cow (which you launched way back in level 1). She then proceeds to fall into a pool of lava. It could be debated that this is an entirely unhappy ending, though, because Jim still manages to hock her crown. He figured he oughta get something out of that ordeal.

------

Taz-Mania (Sega Genesis)

The plot: Taz's family sits around the living room and listens to Dad/Bing Crosby talk about the legendary Phoenix. When he hears about how huge and delicious the Phoenix's eggs are, Taz sets off to find a Phoenix, kick its ass, and eat like a king.

The ending: Taz does indeed find a Phoenix egg. But it hatches before he can eat it, releasing a cute baby phoenix that mistakes Taz for its mama. Taz angrily goes back home with the giant chick at his heels. To add insult to injury, Taz's adventure took him all across Tasmania....and the Phoenix nest was right next to his house.

A couple I remember.... (SPOILERS AHEAD)

Conker's Bad Fur Day. (N64)

After beating the alien, Conker realizes he forgot to ask the programmer to bring his girlfriend, Berri, back from the dead, and at the end of the game, he pretty much gets crocked at a bar.

Metal Gear Solid 3. (PS2)

After defeating the Boss and beating Ocelot at his own game, Snake and EVA celebrate. Sounds like a good ending, so far, but it goes downhill from there. After stealing the Legacy from Snake, EVA leaves Snake a message as to why she did it. After shaking hands with President Lyndon B. Johnson, Snake, now known as Big Boss, heads out to the cemetery in Arlington, Virginia to pay his final respects to the Boss.

Eternal Ring. (PS2)

I'm not going to lie, this game was a buggy pain in the ass. But it does have a sad ending. After defeating Soulus, it is finally then that he learns of human emotions, but at oh, what a price. After Cain wins and makes his escape, Soulus heads over to Layla, seeing her lifeless body, and finally understand the sorrow that he has come to know as death, swearing to never make life miserable for anyone, again.

The Ninja Warriors AGAIN (SNes)

You play as either one of three android ninjas created by a rebelling faction lead by never-seen-on-screen "Mulk" to overthrow the tyranic Banglar, a guy who's short, pudgy, and has red eyes and elf ears.

As you finally give Banglar his due, the androids activate a self-destruct mechanism because their thought circuitry wasn't fully fleshed out and daddy Mulk apparently wasn't looking forward to having a potentialy contestatory lifeform that exceeds the limits of human beings knocking at his door.

Mulk starts a new government, becomes power-hungry and then his own forces by far exceed Banglar's.

"The people seeing this said,

'History repeats itself'."

Yep. That's the end statement.

Hello? SplatterHouse?

Your girlfriend becomes a demon and you kill her, then end up in an asylum or something like that.

I believe that was already mentioned.

Anyway, I thought of another.

Megaman 7 (SNES)

After defeating Dr. Wily, Megaman comes dangerously close to breaking the First Asimovian Law of Robotics, trying to kill Dr. Wily. As Wily begs for mercy, the robot that Megaman trusted, Bass, comes to Wily's rescue at the last minute. Doesn't sound that sad, up until you listen to the music at the credits.

Spawn (SNES)

After saving the children from the final boss, Spawn watches sadly as Cyan is reunited with her parents. Then, Malebolgia appears to grant Spawn another favor. With a great deal of agony, Spawn's Hell energy is returned to him as Malebolgia laughs darkly.

Tenchu 4 (or Tenchu Shadow Assassins, depending on the country) for Wii (surprise!) or PSP. Two slightly different endings, both of which involve Rikimaru inadvertantly killing Lord Goda's daughter Princess Kiku as he was trying to polish off Onikage. While Onikage also lays dying (at least until next time), he gives Rikimaru a mocking Joker-esque (Onikage even looks like the Joker in this injstallment) speech and tells him this has been his plan all along. Ayame goes mad with grief and Rikimaru is plunged into self loathing and despair.

This is bad ending: lite. In the REALLY bad one Ayame is possessed by Onikage's spirit at the end and begins to taunt Rikimaru in Oni's voice. Tenchu 5, anyone?

One of the Phantasy Star games for Genesis (2, I think) also had a big time downer of an ending. After defeating the nigh-on-invincible multiple forms of the final boss, the PC's are surrounded by a huge hoard they know they'll be unable to defeat. To their credit, they resolve to go down fighting, but it sucks to know that the whole mess ends with their deaths anyway.

One version of Contra, known as Gryzor, has a pretty depressing ending.

Despite destroying Red Falcon, the Earth is still destroyed. Talk about, "Damned if you do and damned if you don't."

Yeah, that was Phantasy Star II. For years I wondered if they actually died, or managed to come out on top. The game never tells you. You do find out in PS IV, which takes place about a thousand years later. And yes, they died.

I wonder what the people will see in the final days.

R-Type Final -

Although this one does feature 3 different endings, I never received nor have I ever seen the third one. The first two are pretty damn depressing, though, especially the second. In the first, the final level will begin with a transcript recovered from your voice recorder - which foreshadows your death. As you travel through the stage, which is made of a liquid capable of reading your thoughts, you see a silhouette of two lovers making love in the background of the level. Once you reach the end, you fight against the Bydo core, which absorbs your force and leaves you almost defenseless. You then notice that your charge beam is broken, and begin charging, anyway. Once you reach a full charge, the meter reads "final," and you let loose all the power of your ship in one final shot. The ending shows your powerless ship floating down an endless corridor...

The second ending is a lot worse, though. In the stage before the final one, you actually transform into a Bydo and completely lose yourself. You find yourself traveling back to the first stage in time and actually becoming the ship that caused the massacre you first investigated. You helplessly kill an entire armada of your comrade, only recognizing them as familiar faces as you slaughter them. If you pay close attention any time you play the first stage, normally, you'll find that ship flying away in the background. The transcript from the stage is also taken from a recovered voice recorder, so it's also assumed you're eventually put out of your misery in this ending, as well.

The third ending, which I've already said I never managed to get, starts you in a stage where you're only given one life and you are stripped of all your continues, has you traveling back in time to reach the current time. Although I've never gotten the ending, I presume it's the "happiest" of the three, considering it's the only one where the transcript at the beginning isn't from a recovered voice recorder.

It's difficult to decide which ending is canon, so I generally tend to think they're all canon. After all, the game has a big focus on the fact you have over 100 ships at your disposal, it's not far fetched to assume that they all take place.

I'll probably think of some more, later.

Alone in the Dark - Inferno

Carnby either kills his partner and gets possessed by the demons he's been fighting against throughout the game, or he has to walk away as his partner is taken over to an uncertain future with dimming hope for humanity. Though being possessed is pretty cool. "I'm the lightbringer! I'm the fucking universe!" :rollin

Dead Space

Isaac kills the hive mind and escapes on a shuttle. Accepting that the sole reason for him being there, Nicole, was always dead and he had no hope of saving her Isaac sighs... then notices some movement. It's a Necromorph that has snuck onto the ship. What's more, it appears to be Nicole reanimated, and she attacks Isaac before he can react.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed

You die. :lol

Fallout

You save most of the inhabitants of the California wasteland and your Vault (alongside securing them the much needed water chip) from the Super Mutant threat but on returning after your long hard journey, the Overseer of Vault 13 accuses you of having been tainted by the wasteland and kicks you out on your ass.

Phantasmagoria

You survive and kill the demon, but you had to kill your beloved to do so (who was possessed by said demon) and you leave a broken shell of your former self.

Soul Reaver 2

Raziel kills his former self with the Soul Reaver. After reaping Sarafan Raziels soul, it turns its attention to Wraith Raziel. He finally realizes that the wraith blade in the Reaver has always been his time lost soul, driven insane after being trapped in the confines of the Soul Reaver for a countless time on a loop due to the paradox, which Raziel has just completed yet again. Kane intervenes sparing Raziel and changing his destiny to be trapped in the blade then and there, but Raziel realizes he can't run forever and despairs.

Planescape: Torment

The Nameless One either slays or rejoins with his mortality, and after saying goodbye to his friends he finally dies, and finds himself in his new eternal existence of a hell like realm where demons and devils wage war forever. He picks up a mace and joins the fray.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky

You disable Strelok's psi protection, but there is a blowout and everyone at the Chernobyl NPP has there minds wiped and reprogrammed, your character likely joining the Monolith or becoming a zombie.

Hm, interesting...here's a few that quickly come to mind before brainstorming. Of course, you can guess two of them are my regulars...

Cyber Lip (Neo-Geo) - Do I really have to describe this game's ending? The old 'helping the disguised aliens all along against the only thing that could stop them from taking over Earth' story.

Valis 3 (TG-CD/PCE/Genesis) - If you a)take translation into account and b)look at when this game came out, not knowing that the ok Valis IV (PCE) or lame Super Valis 4 (SNES) would eventually follow, it fits. Yuko and co defeat Ramses/Glames, who pleads for them to save the people of his dying (dark) world (one of three worlds in Valis, along with 'Earth' and 'Dreamworld'), and for Yuko to return his Leethus sword to where it came from. After parting words with Valna and Cham to save the dark world peoples, Yuko is taken by a beam of light into the sky to return both swords so they'll never be used again.

You're next told that the worlds were saved, the dark worlders received a new home...and that nobody has ever seen Yuko again...nobody.

So, not only did you not know where exactly poor Yuko, who went through a hell of a lot in V1-3 (not to mention, oh, losing several people close to her and saving planets), ended up...the game hits you with this final image over the credits of her with a music track that STILL TO THIS DAY makes me cry. :(

El Viento (Genesis) - I'll loop this as a sad AND bad ending.

Annet beats Hastur, who was possessing Restiana's body after she was sacrificed unknowingly, and she ends up looking at 'Tiana's twisted corpse. One of those 'it was the only way to save her' situations. You get a very teary eyed Annet crying into Earnest Evans chest...

...oh, the 'bad' part. Their 'friend' Ziegried (who's also there)? Turns out he planned it, having Annet defeat Hastur in order to keep the world safe...for the upcoming WARS he's going to start (this game takes place near 1930s). Ziegfried is quite an evil bastard in EV's seldom seen sequel, Anet Futatabi.

Total Carnage (Arcade) - Why do I list this one? Not for being a bad ending, but for being a 'you STILL didn't do it right' ending.

Smash TV's 'sequel' here has 3 endings, depending if you capture the final boss after blowing up his umpteenth form or not, and if you have the dreaded 200-500 keys needed to enter 'The Pleasuredome' (a holdover from Smash TV).

This last ending seems very happy...until the ending credits inform you that there's even MORE to see if you grab every prize inside the Dome itself...a feat I think NO ONE has ever accomplished. Personally...I think the game creators' were pulling a joke on this one, but it's there. ^^

Hm...

I got the impression that Yuko became something of a god at the end of Valis III, so that ending's probably open to debate. Also Total Carnage has a good ending, so I'm afraid it doesn't count....

Yeah, she techincally did become a goddess after V3...you just don't know what happened to her at all until V4/SV4 (again, I pointed out the fact of back when the game originally came out, this was very unclear).

As for Total Carnage, yeah, technically that's a multiple ending game...but I'm just pointing out the fact that in the 'mega happy ending', the game STILL taunts you saying 'you can do even better than that, and we have more to show you' just to piss you off. ;)

Yet another.

Turok 3 for the N64.

You end up killing Joshua Fireseed, Turok 2's protagonist, whose body was being controlled by Oblivion. At the end, both of the new-generation Turoks hear his final words. He announces that he knew that Danni was pregnant with her late husband's child, and that child would be the one to bring salvation from Oblivion. The two Turoks and Adon then finish Oblivion off, once and for all. Adon, believing she can save Joshua, who she has strong feelings of love for, tries to convince the Council to give her permission to try, but they had no intention of granting it. She had grown rather furious, deciding that if they would go against her wishes, then she would go against theirs. After Adon left, the Council had turned to a shadowy figure, presumably Adon's mother.

I can't believe I didn't mention this one, earlier.

Shadow of the Colossus for the PS2.

The spirits have promised you the chance of bringing your beloved back from the dead. And all you have to do is kill 16 giants. Sounds simple, right? Well, there's a catch. Each colossus you kill takes a little of your humanity from you. Once you do in all 16, you end up a mindless demon, taking on a religious order who know you stole a holy sword and intruded in a forbidden land. The spirits do keep their word, but at oh, what a price. As the religious order flees, one of them throws the sword into the pool at the bottom of the spiraling staircase, sucking you into a vortex. From that vortex emerges a baby with horns. Your beloved doesn't know what happened to you, but she takes care of you, stuck forever in this forbidden land.

GTA IV had a bit of a downer ending. Well, the downer part happens earlier in the game when your girlfriend gets killed in a drive-by and you spend the last part of the game bent on revenge. Well, that is what one endings is anyway, I hear in the other one yoru cousin gets killed in the drive-by.

Havn't seen or heard if there is a way to save them both.

^ There's not, unfortunately. If your girlfriend dies, you live with the burden of having never listened to Roman, if Roman dies, you live with the burden of having never listened to your girlfriend (she also ends all communication with you). I thought so too. Kate may have been supportive, but Roman was with you since the very beginning of the game. Blood runs thicker and all that, you know? Though, for Kate being killed, I must say that Packie's call later is pretty depressing.

The Ninja Warriors AGAIN (SNes)

I think we have a winner. That's the most soul-crushing vg ending I've ever heard.

Agreed on that.

Come to think of it, the ending for the arcade version that The Ninja Warriors Again was essentially a remake of wasn't much better. Namely because the titular characters proceeded to fuck up the country beyond repair after their creators tried to destroy them.

Now I'm off to try and think of some games that haven't already been mentioned before.

TOUCHDOWN! Right between the legs.
Mooninites
People will probably groan at this, but I loved FF7 when I was growing up.
SO naturally I got myself Crisis Core. The game explains in great detail what happened to Zack Fair during his time as a SOLDIER, the Sephiroth freakout at the Nibelheim reactor, and when he and Cloud were also captured by Shin-Ra.

In the original FF7 they don't explain Zack's story too deeply. Zack and his accomplishment on attaining the elusive SOLDIER rank would later be the archetype that an unstable, Mako-infused cloud would base his memories off of. Yeah, Cloud was in a coma, and so screwed up that when he came to after Zack died, he thought Zack's memories were his, both out of mental instability, and shame for not being able to make it to SOLDIER first class, like Zack did.

Zack, in the original, Basically comes to in a lab where he and cloud are being experimented on. He carries Cloud away and they escape, only to be found by Shin-Ra later on down a dirt path. FF7 makes it seem Zack dies a dog's death and they leave Cloud for dead.

In Crisis Core when they elaborate, it becomes very clear this isn't the situation.
A longer, winding story about Zack and his confrontations with evils even before Sephiroth went mad.

When Zack meets Cloud they instantly become friends in SOLDIER. Later after the Nibelheim incident when the escape the lab Zack cares for Cloud. He talks to a comatose Cloud about his dreams of freedom now. What he will do, what job he will have, will he settle down with that cute flower girl, and of course he tells Cloud he can come too, he wouldn't abandon him.

Shortly after, Shin-Ra finds them and its the end of the road. Zack is already tattered and torn from the expriments of the lab, and constant fighting. Troves and throngs of soldiers open fire immediately upon Zack. He puts Cloud in a safe place and fights to the death. The final battle is quite dramatic and struggling, soldiers seemingly pouring from infinite ranks as he gets shot to shit. Taking bullets, stab wounds, burns, missile debris, everything being thrown at him and he just fights more and more.

He finally can stand no more and is shot down a final time. They leave Cloud for dead, and Cloud slowly drags himself over to Zack. Cloud being completely immersed in Mako has a hard time understanding whats going on, and barely recognized Zack which makes Zack's effort to protect him quite bittersweet.
He ends up telling Cloud to live, and live out both their lives on Zack's behalf because he can't be there with him. Cloud hears these words, becoming distraught and follows Zack's order, and drags himself down the dirt path to continue his life as Zack fades on into the lifestream.

I definitely bawwwwww'd.

TL;DR I found it very sad, bittersweet and tearjerking.

I've heard Crisis Core is a damned good game. The only consistent flaw I've heard about it is that the game's big bad is lame, this Genesis fellow who's often pejoratively named "Gacktaroth." Aside from that, it's a game that I'd like to pick up at some point.

As for an overall unhappy ending... the final game to the Chzo Mythos, 6 Days A Sacrifice. An ominous and somewhat open ending, if I do say so myself.
