http://www.us.playstation.com/girlzplaytoo What kind of sexist BS is this? "Girlz Play Too"? This has to be the lamest thing I've seen Sony do in ages. Have we taken steps straight backward with the "games for girls" mentality? What next, the limited edition Barbie Shopping Mall Adventure bundle? PSP ports of Reverb's My Make Up, My Dress Up and My Secret Diary (anyone with the October '08 issue of Play can look these up, pg. 119) to be sold exclusively for play on the OMG! Lilac PSP? OMG GIRLZ PLAY VIDEOGAMEZ 2! I will never, ever buy this kind of crap for my girls. And I certainly hope that I can raise them to where they can look beyond this kind of lame shit if and when they decide to buy their own games. And don't get me started on the whole Z instead of S thing. It's so hip and edgy. |

Ugh. I really disagree with this. For one thing, I'd want a lilac PSP, because it is still a PSP, but... yeah. Lilac is a decent colour, but nevertheless it isn't cool. So I think there's nothing wrong with using things that appeal to girls in video games, just please, make good games. Princess Debut is a good example! And hell, the whole Nintendo plan for this. Pink DS = cool enough, girls would probably prefer it (at least many I know). Games like Princess Debut are pretty awesome, and definitely appropriate to what young girls want. But then Sony isn't subtle at all. The "Z"?! Ugh... If girls want to play video games, don't forcefeed them with crap like this! It is simply tacky. To sum things up, I see nothing wrong with giving girls some games that'll appeal to them, and some hardware that might be a little bit cooler for them, but don't make it shit... Just. Don't. If I were to make a game targeted towards young human beings of the female gender, I'd probably give them something I'd want to play, like creative use of the Disney princess style fairy-tales into fun gameplay with social multiplayer modes! I like fairy-tales, and I know that girls do too, at least in generalization. It'd probably be something like a cuter Power Stone, with awesome themed levels. Customize your characters with different clothing (my sister and her friends LOVE doing this), and maybe add an out-of-battle mode like a house simulator, kind of like the Sims and kind of like those Tamogatchi games (but much more advanced, and I know games like this, but can't remember the names). Maybe a little gameplay element like Team Buddy with the boxes for weapons, but they'd be made like presents or something (that is all I can think of). Hell, maybe I'm forcing this too much... I'd play that game though, :lol |

So, they shouldn't make 'girly' looking versions of videogame systems? What's so wrong with that really? Don't get me wrong, I get annoyed at the whole z for s crap that marketing things makes them 'cool' and 'edgy'... kind of like 'X-treme' and crap. But I really don't see a problem with more 'girly looking stuff aimed at, well, girls... or "tween" girls as this looks marketed to. Or is it just that videogame companies should not be allowed to jump on the same bandwagon everyone else has? Is it just because this is 'your' thing, back from the early days when videogames were not quite so mainstream and you had it all to yourself? If I had a daughter and she wanted a lilac PSP to play some fairy princess videogame... why not? She'll probably already have dolls and other girls stuff she plays with anyway why not 'girly' video games too? A girl can play with a pink barbie doll, but not a pink PSP? They are young girls, they are probably not going to have the same tastes their father will when it comes to their video game choices. I don't see it as sexist. There wouldn't be a 2-3 isles at walmart dedicated to pink girly stuff if girls weren't buying. Just because it is a video game does not make it excempt from the rest of the world..... even if you want to keep it as pure as it was back in the Atari days. |

Lilac is purple. ( - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lilac_(color) - ) But that's aside from the point, one which you are entirely missing. Girly colors? That's fine, I honestly wish that I had that color of PSP. Lilac is one of my favorite colors. I don't think a single person on here is going to find themselves even remotely bothered by them selling a pink PSP, either. What we're pissed off by is the fact that their method of advertising this new PSP is offensively sexist. The "Hannah Montana" PSP Entertainment pack? Getting more of the female population into gaming shouldn't have anything to do with making girls look like this asinine, exclusive population. Gamers are both genders, making a big deal out of "girl gaming" only further seeks to segregate gamers, in general. Just because these kinds of items are purchased for girls doesn't mean they don't have negative impact nor does it mean they're not sexist. You could do some research on feminism and find plenty of women who don't fall for this shit and find it grossly offensive. I made it clear on here before that I'm a transwoman. I find it offensive. I linked my best friend, who is a woman and a feminist, to it. She found it offensive ("sexist as hell"). I linked it to one of my other closest friends, who is a lesbian ("dual what did we do to deserve this"). She found it offensive. It's seriously, horribly sexist and just plain awful. |

But there are a ton of young, pre-teen and even teen girls who really like Hannah Montana. What is wrong with Sony packaging a PSP for girls (not women, or ladies, but girls. Young kids!) with a marketable franchise? It is exactly the same as the Darth Vader Starwars PSP or the Ratchet one to me. It is just a selling point! I highly 100% absolutely doubt they were even remotely considering the main demographic was women of 16 age and up. And that is stretching it. |

Hannah Montana is a completely detestable marketing sensation made to appeal to stereotypes and even my young, female cousin despises her with no influence from her father to do so.
Look at the "girls" in that advertisement. Do they look like they're under 15? No. Take a second to do that HORRIBLE "what game character are you" quiz they have advertised in the bottom right. The questions are disgustingly stereotypical with equally stereotypical answers and are very clearly aimed at high schoolers. It's horrible, and what's even more horrible is that a lot of girls/women/females are coerced into falling for this shit (I'm not even going to get started on how much this society is unjustly run by a patriarchy). Microsoft may not be as bad as Sony when it comes to this subject, but they also have this stupid "GamerchiX" thing (which, for the longest time, I thought was "Gamer Chi X") they do where "girl gamerz" get together online to show they're just as bad as boys or some such fucking nonsense. This kind of advertising is incredibly sexist and very far and away from being a respectful way of advertising to females. Girls are people, not slaves to fashion, gossip, and celebrity magazines (seriously, take that quiz in the bottom right). Also, the exact same as a Darth Vader PSP or Ratchet one? What the fuck have you been smoking? Marketing to a gender and marketing to people who are fans of a couple of game/movie icons are two incredibly different things and comparing the two of them like that is incredibly ignorant. |

What bothers me most is how people will blow up over this, but when pop culture portrays men in a sexist light there's not a peep from anybody. Men easily get stereotyped more in advertisements and TV shows because at least 99% of the TV moms are capable parents. Explain that part of the "patriarchy" for me. Sexism and advertising go hand-in-hand. It could be because the people making the commercials are mouth-breathers who aren't smart enough to understand human beings beyond stereotypes...or, more likely, it could be that they're smart because they realize the general populace are mouth-breathers who aren't smart enough to understand human beings beyond stereotypes, and exploit it to sell their shit. I'm voting the latter. Companies should be pandering to their demographics' tastes, not their prejudices, but people in general are too simple-minded to be reached any other way. So fuck it. You want stereotypes to disappear from television, wipe out the American population. |

Oh, I didn't really look at the links because they didn't load properly... So that was a bit of a folly on my part, but I can't honestly help it. Anyways, I can see all of your points, but taken on its own the Hannah Montana PSP is exactly the same. It is obvious is being attempted though, and I see nothing wrong with the plan. To get more girls into playing more games. For Sony. Because most girls I know would get a DS far before a PSP, so Sony figures they can get that whole other side of things. They're doing it in a dumb manner though. Yeah 5thMan I hear ya! It isn't even in advertisements it is everywhere! I was called a "homo" just today because I wouldn't want nude PVC figures. I find them distasteful to be honest. But, people will make everything out to be "bad" because I'm not fulfilling the perverted stereotype? That is totally bogus. To be honest, I hate a lot of feminism. It usually isn't even about people having equal rights (because in a lot of ways women have more rights, I'd say) it is just about... bullcrap. I get called many things for idiotic reasons, but one of the worst is "sexist" because I think it is a nice thing to hold a door open for a lady. Fuck, I hold the door open for EVERYONE. |

Feminism is great on paper (equality). Most people just miss the point (petty revenge). I probably learned more from it than most people who claim to be feminists. It's not even feminism I'm worried about. I'm worried about the regular folks, many who also share your sentiments. The fact is most people who are prejudiced either justify it or don't realize it, without the help of political group affiliation. And Hannah Montana....gawd, don't get me started on Disney. But I digress. I'd by a lavender playstation. Why not? |

You know, seeing as how we've known each other for years, I thought you knew me better than that. I'm actually pretty taken aback at the venom you just spewed at me here. I may call myself a virtual caveman, but I'm not as stuck in the past or obsessed with keeping things "pure" as you obviously think I am, nor am I so set in my ways that I'm completely inflexible to the point of insisting that my children have the exact same gaming (or other) likes and dislikes as me. And honestly, that you do think that makes me sad. Just because I prefer things a certain way (and really, though I may miss the days before games were mainstream, I'm not stupid enough to think it'll ever go back that way. That was a great time that's come and gone, and it will never happen again, and I know this) doesn't mean I'm going to strike out at something like this because of... what? A color? Fuck no. There have been multicolored consoles since the early '90s, and that has never bothered me. Maybe it's caused me to roll my eyes a couple of times, but that's it. If one of my girls wanted a lilac PSP to play a fairy princess game and I could afford it (and she was responsible enough to take care of it), I'd have no problem getting it for her. I know I have girls, I know they like girly things - I hear it every day. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. You're talking to the guy that got them Crystal's Pony Tale for the Genesis, one of the most little girl-centric games ever created, right down to being able to customize the colors of your pony. They love it, and I'm happy seeing them (all three of them) enjoy playing it. I also bought them The Little Mermaid for the NES, which they love playing. Surely these are games I would never buy for myself, don't you agree? Dual summed up why I'm annoyed very succinctly, so I'll just quote her to get my point across:
Let me highlight one part in particular:
My girls are as much people as you and I. Between myself and Lisa, they have already been exposed to a wide range of experiences: education, music, movies, activities, videogames and all sorts of other stuff that we both hope are helping them grow up into well-rounded people. As far as videogames go, they go from playing Ms. Pac-Man to Contra to Crystal's Pony Tale to Shadow of the Ninja and all points in between without blinking an eye. They enjoy playing videogames, nearly any videogame as long as it's fun to them. Why should I let Sony's sexist marketing tell my girls "this is what you should play because you're a girl"? They'll get enough of that at school, I'm sure, and it won't be just videogame related. There will be new fads, trends and so on, and it'll only get worse the older they get. When they get older, if they decide on their own that they want to follow the masses, there's not much I can do about that. You have to let them go sometime, so they can have their own experiences, make their own mistakes and live their lives - but until then, especially since they're still so young, I refuse to let them be pigeonholed into a demographic. That's why Sony can take this bullshit and shove it up their collective asses.
I have to admit, that bugs me too - which is probably why shows like Home Improvement never sat well with me. |

I wasn't trying to spew venom, don't get me wrong. If I camw across that way, I apologize. I didnt meam anything by it personally. Maybe I justy misunderstood your argument. But I have heard you guys complaign about some of the more pop aspects of gaming these days, so I guess I just went off of that. Again, I meant no venom by it. Wasn't knocking on you personally Rob. I guess my argument was a little misdirected. I seem to have a problem with that. I see the ad campaign being aimed at 'tweens', yes they use pictures of older girls in the ads, but that's part of it. The young girls see the ads with the older girls and want to be 'cool' like them. I don't see older teens getting in on this. This is really aimed for the younger crowd. It's all marketing. Hannah Montana is supposed to be an older teen, but real older teens aren't into her, it's the younger ones. At least they are the ones buying the crap at walmart. You dont see too many 17 year olds walking around with HM shirts on. I may not have ever done marketing, but I was in the print industry to see this kind of marketing used enough. |

No shit, really? <_< I was just making a point. Apparanty one I didn't need to make. Meh, Obviously I'm not able to get my point across without it coming off the wrong way. My mistake. I don't see it as being THAT sexist, but what the hell do I know. Marketing is what it is. Every group of people get marketing aimed at them. Old people, young people, black, white, asian, teens, tweens, etc. etc. This is just marketing for the tween girls. Right or wrong, it's not different then any other commercial or ad. I don't have any more complaints with this as i do with any other ad compaigns. They all suck in their own way. Someday I'll figure out how to express my oppinions better on here. |

Hey, it's cool. I was just really surprised when I saw your post, since a lot of it did seem directed specifically at me. After all, who else in this thread is a father with little girls? And speaking of which, I have a tendency to look at ad campaigns like this a lot closer these days, simply because I am a father with little girls. I don't want the wrong message sent to them, and this isn't the first ad campaign (or TV show, for that matter) I've had a problem with. I just haven't spoken about the rest here. I decided a while ago to stop complaining about how far gaming has gotten from the "good ol' days." It's like George Lucas-bashing - it's pointless because no matter how much you bitch and moan, nothing will ever be changed, so why waste your time and energy railing about it? However, like with Lucas' films, with videogames it's easy to live in the past and ignore the present, if you're inclined to do so. I'm not in either case, although I used to be that way with gaming. The Splatterhouse and Bionic Commando announcements changed all that. |

I'm all with you on that. I think the way the market stuff these days to kids is really sad. I guess when you brought this up I thought you were just bitching about the games and not the rest. Came off a little like you were upset they were stepping into your backyard now. And I was coming from the thought that they did it everywhere else, why not videgames too? Doesn't make it right, but marketing people are kind of like the borg, except they are after the money. |

This just reminds me of how many times I have to answer "You play video games?" or "When did girls start working here?" when I'm at GameStop. We have little enough credibility as it is, can we please not make the problem worse? That said, it seems to me like they're trying to compete with the DS now. Nintendo has far too many games aimed at young girls (granted, most of them are indeed crap, but I digress), so maybe Sony was feeling the heat. I'm just going by what I see on a daily basis. That is, 7 year old girls playing Nintendogs on a pink DS. They make up a huge chunk of sales. I do think the marketing is crap, but hey, I'm also annoyed that the big, hyped games are always shooters and sports games. They just go with what sells. |

Eh, my backyard is still there, untouched by all the noobs. They're all playing in the front yard. I've accepted that in a lot of ways, gaming has moved on without me. It's not my hobby anymore, not the way that it was. But luckily, there are thousands - and I do mean thousands - of games I never discovered the first time around, so it's not like the well has gone dry for me either.
"Your wallet will be assimilated" and all that? :lol
Sad as it may be, I can see the basis for those questions. Nine times out of ten, the girls I've encountered working at GameStop didn't know shit about shit when it came to gaming - and I don't mean that they couldn't carry on a conversation about classic games, most of them barely knew about the current stuff they were carrying. One prime example I can think of was back when my (future, at the time) manager at the GS in Lilburn actually passed over several guys with genuine gaming knowledge and retail experience just so he could hire a "hot chick", even though she knew jack shit about games (or retail, as it turned out). I'm not guessing here, he flat out told me himself. As expected, she didn't last very long. I'm sorry you have to put up with that shit, though. You're a rarity, as far as I can tell - a woman that avidly plays videogames that works at GS.
I agree with that completely.
"Your wallet will be assimilated", as it were. Can't say I blame them, after all - they are a company that's in it to make money, and those games are their bread and butter. |
