I wasn't being sexist! What the hell?

I'm thinking "Yeah".

That's a definite "yeah." Destron, the sexism of which I refer to has to do with stuff like the subject of this thread and the stories about GameStop that both Jo and I mentioned, not about what you said.

On this note, my sister also works in gamestop with two other women. Apparently girls working in them are quite common these days

Just making sure, I was afraid I had posted something offensive.

Yeah, Sgraff (is that a G, or a Q? :lol), I've only ever been to Gamestops with women working there, and only once an EB without. Oddly enough, they're all somewhat attractive, which I guess is supposed to equate to being a good saleswomen. This isn't always the case, but I guess hot=sales to some of the higher ups at those establishments.

....Lemme tell ya a little story.
There's four girls in that photo. The first one is addicted to smack. She sells herself on the streets night after night to feed the demon on her back and hates herself for it. Hates herself? That reminds me of girl number two. He body is a roadmap of scars, burns, piercings and contusions, all self-inflicted, because she so despises the cheerleader puppet her hollow, disallusioned mother has turned her into. That third girl there, she likes hurting things. It started out with small animals, but it grew....and grew. Some neighborhood children are missing. But she wouldn't know anything about that, would she? The fourth girl is harboring dee-seated neo-nazi beliefs, and her locker is full of guns and bombs. At exactly 2:15 at school this day, her master plan is coming into full effect. And nothing will ever be the same.

DO NOT BE LIKE THESE GIRLS.

And for the record, me & my fiancee first bonded over Resident Evil 3 & House Of The Dead 2. And her favorite games these days happen to be Monster Party & Splatterhouse: Wanpaku Graffiti. Real girls not only "play too", but like things that don't suck.

Well, to appeal to the inherent nature of young girls is perfectly fine. A lot of girls like things that are pink, dig dolls, and enjoy a spot of Disney from time to time.

But to thoroughly dumb down and insult what the inherent nature of young girls is, that's pretty bullshit.

See, putting it that way makes sense.

Hell, to be honest, I enjoy "girly" things from time to time! So really, everything should be made to appeal to all tastes regardless of gender! To be honest, it was only in that one description of what the best painfully "girly" game would be that I've ever thought "Oh, this would be GREAT for girls... but not boys" I always just think "Oh, this would be GREAT!"

So I think I'm on the right track.

My boss and I were talking about this the other night, and we realized that the girls (or girlz, if you prefer) who are going to buy into this marketing shtick are going to have a really hard time finding other games on the PSP. They're aiming it at the type of girls that keep the "Imagine" series going, but there's not really anything like that on the PSP. Not widely available, anyway.

Hey, maybe they'll be forced to broaden their horizons and the world will be better for it. :p

We can only hope.

There's a whole fuckload more to life than Hannah Montana, Bratz, and all that other stuff. I have a niece, and she needs those sugar-job games like Michael Moore needs 20 Big Macs*.

Here's the thing... I'm not sure little girls want to broaden their horizons. I work with them all day long, and here's what I know: I'm in charge of approving the websites the kids can get on, in the Tech Lab. I initially approved a bunch of really progressive girls' sites like GirlsGoTech (the one from the commercial with the little girl on the beach asking her dad why the sky's blue) and stuff like that. Also, GirlsGoGames, which is pink and purple and includes dressup dolls.

For the next month, the progressive websites where ignored while the girls played GirlsGoGames exclusively. They clamored for Stardolls and Pixie Hollow and Trollz and a bunch of other shit, too... so I caved and put those up. I tried to show the girls about the other sites, and they would have none of it. "Boring." "Some guy made this site. Look at it! It doesn't look like a girl's site." Etc.

To date, I can count on one hand the number of girls that wanted to play on the other sites. I have seen exactly ONE girl go looking for an out-of-the-box site, EdHeads, and start dissecting bodies and stuff using the virtual cadaver. Naturally, I bookmarked/approved the hell outta that one.

I understand and appreciate that Sony's bending to the lowest common denominator with this PSP advertising, and that they may also, in fact, be misleading the girls because they don't have the software they're implying they do... but in my experience, young girl gamers aren't progressive, if they're gamers at all.

Should it be that way? No, for all the reasons already covered in this thread. But is Sony wrong for trying to market their product to the way things are as opposed to the way things should be? I dunno. I mean, they are a publicly owned company, which means their one and only real responsibility is to make those shares go up. That means moving units.

Changing the way things are takes a grassroots movement, not a corporate marketing strategy. It starts at home, with the parents, and it starts with the girl herself. You can't force her to like something she doesn't want to. Good for Rob for broadening his girls' horizons. If you want to change the status quo for girl gamers, try spending some time with a little girl yourself, like he has. That's the only way to do it. Your mentoring influence and relationship with her will open her up and help her see things outside whatever parameters her parents have placed on her. Complaining about it here and blaming Sony won't help that much.

So since I'm doing both, am I helping or hindering the process?

And we do have to remember that those of us girls who already consider ourselves "gamers" don't wait for Sony's permission or a specific color system. They're not aiming for us.

I liked the Vader edition, personally.

On a side note, I want to know where all the "gamer girls" were back in the late '80s and early '90s.

Yeah. It's questionable whether they even could. I mean, the kinds of girls who are objecting to the Hannah Montana PSP aren't going to have a problem buying a normal one. So how would you market a normal PSP to a girl that doesn't care and is going to buy the games she wants, regardless?

You can't. So the only group that needs a special PSP is the one that you can market to, which would be the girls that won't buy one unless it looks like it was designed specifically for them.

I have people say to me "wow, you know girls who play video games!?"

It never seemed to hard for me. I'm glad I grew up when I did, for that at least. What is weird, is that it never seemed to be that way until highschool, and before that the only girls who played video games were creepy ones... :lol

Not necessarily. Y'see, while everyone was busy playing SFII and MK, I would've had the whole rest of the arcade to myself. In fact I did, on several occasions.

Don't recall seeing too many women in them, though.
