Hockesin's Guide to a Modern RP It has come to my attention that many of you do not know how to RP, so I have decided to make this guide with help from Formisia. Contribution by Mahaj. Statistics This is pretty much the element that drives the game, if you are not aware of statistics, then you will probably be accused of godmodding and Mods will delete your posts, all for one reason: THE WORLD STATISTICS AND YOUR STATISTICS DON'T ALLOW YOU TO DO IT. Statistics include: Supplies Population Land Resources Militarry Numbers, Vehicles, etc. The quality or quantity of something. The Tech Level of your nation, likes its technology advancement and its ability to use. DEFCON LEVEL: Defensive Condition level. Ranges from 1 (Full war readiness) to 5 (peacetime readiness) Supplies and Resources: They are what powers your nations every day activities. You can't build a military if you don't have the proper resources (aka iron and coal). If you don't have them, then you must buy them, making you reliant on another nation. For instance, if you are blockaded and aren't getting oil, you will have to ration what oil you have, reducing your military and economic ability. And you cannot have every resource necessary, or you have to have setbacks in other parts of your nation. Population and Land Another major part, basically, how many people you have and your total land area. Remember that in the far North and South (Canada, Siberia, South Argentina), there are less people. But these lands tend to have more reources, as they weren't strip-mined like the more populated areas. If you have large amount of land and a low population, then you have low population density. The same goes for small amount of land and high population, you have a high population density and nukes would have a devastating effect on your country. Be aware you cannot have a large army without a large population, as this would crash your economy from lack of workforce, and just the huge amounts you spend on your military. Example: North Korea, has 1 million soldiers but can't feed their own people. The equation is take you own population and multiply it by .004 to get your total armed forces. Military Numbers By using the equation given above, it will tell you your total number of military forces. Bear in mind that this includes service staff, pilots, crewmen, etc, so if your total number of forces is 50,000, you will likely only have 30,000 real soldiers. And also, any military with troops under 50,000 will be incapable of launching offensives, considering most modern day offensives consist of 30,000 to 80,000 troops, it would leave the country defenseless. Modern day navies consist of about 350 ships max. Unless you have a good reason, you cannot go much higher than that. It would take titanic amounts of resources and money to make a navy that big. Quality, Quanitity, and Technology Having a lot of one thing usually means they are low quality, unless you have a good reason. Having little either means you cannot afford, do not want, or have very-high quality versions of that item. Try to find a balance that suits your nation. Your technology is also another big part of your nation. It deteremines how effective your military is, its ability to defend against attacks, missile and otherwise, and the vehicles. It also plays into your economy, as a low-tech economy will be less effected by war and EMP's, but will perform poorer than a technologically advanced economy in most occurences. Warfare It is important that you know what your weapons are actually capable of. Nukes: After about 30 or so nukes hit the ground (possibly fewer depending on the megaton range), enough dust gets kicked into the upper atmosphere to cause what is known as a nuclear winter. Don't shoot off this many nukes or people will be pissed at you. EMPs: Nukes create EMPs when they explode. These will fry electronics and disrupt radio communications. It is possible to build devices that create EMPs and nothing else, and these devices can knock out an entire continent. They can only damage civilian electronics though. Government and military electronics are usually shielded to the point where it takes a nuclear EMP to do anything. The Airforce: Contrary to what some people believe, mass numbers of planes do not help you in modern warfare. It makes you more vulnerable to anti-aircraft fire, and large airbases can be devastated by nuclear EMPs quite easily. Most planes today operate more like flying missile platforms than anything else. You don't see WW2-style furballs anymore. The Navy: Aircraft carriers are king. The last battle between battleships was in World War 2. Carriers are the new battleship. This has been proven so many times it's not even funny. Carrier battlegroups can project power over nearly 200 miles of space. Battleships aren't even good for shore bombardment anymore. Also, submarines tend to be part of carrier battlegroups, so don't be thinking you can just go "lol sub" and sink a carrier. Those things are protected like Fort Knox. Tactics: WORLD WAR 2 TACTICS DO NOT WORK IN A MODERN SETTING! Large armies moving slowly across the land are what missile operators call "easy pickings." You don't need a very powerful cruise missile to eliminate a good portion of a batallion. You also need to avoid having large fleets for the same reason. During a military exercise in the early 2000's between the United States and Israel, Israel launched missiles and blew up the entire US Atlantic fleet before they knew what was happening. The United States actually called a "re-do" on account of it. If you're in a post-modern RP, your nation's leader should already be well-aware of what missiles can do to the battlefield. If you don't have any missile protection, people are going to assume your generals are idiots and proceed to wipe the floor with you. Conquest: Unfortunately, folks, conquering a nation doesn't automatically give you full control over its resources and people. If things worked that way, the Nazis would have held onto France and Eastern Europe. It takes many, many years to gain the loyalty of a conquered people. And sometimes it just never happens. Too many examples in history show that. After all, when Rome fell many nations that had fallen under its sway were all to eager to form their own kingdoms, even after being ruled for hundreds of years by their conquerors. Colonization: If there are unclaimed lands somewhere, declaring ownership does not give you full control automatically. If that were the case, Spain and Britain would probably still be in the Americas, and France probably would not have sold the Louisiana Territory. You need a long time to have colonists move to the new lands, and even more time for solid infrastructure to be built. ICBMs: Countermeasures to knock down nuclear-tipped ICBMs have existed since the late 90's. Because of this, a Cold War-style mutually assured destruction threat is not necessarily guaranteed to work on more powerful nations. OOC: Out of Character IC: In character Godmodding:To, in any way, say what happens to your enemy's forces. EX: Your troops are dead, because I shot them with superguns. It's up to the opposition to determine their losses, unless said losses are within reasonable boundaries. 2. To avoid death. EX: All of my troops have personal shields so none of them can get hurt.(-er, godmoder[n.],-ing, godmoding[adj.,v.]) Or, doing something that is not technically possible. Or, just outrageous and gives an unfair advantage that is unmatchable by any other nation without more godmodding. OP - ABBR: Opening Poster; The user who creates the thread, therefore called the Opening Poster, this person is the judge of everything in the thread and owns the thread IGNORE Cannon* -[ihg-nohr can-nun]-n A weapon used against godmoders when they will not stop godmoding. IGNORE Cannons are invincible, never run out of ammunition or power, and cannot be used by godmoders. SIC - ABBR: Secret-In-Character [see-kret-ihn-kayr-ahk-tur] Writing as a character, to describe an event which the other members of the Roleplay can know OOCly but cannot use ICly, e.g two General's talking about an upcoming ambush. MT: Modern Time, which means present day technology and stuff FT: Future Time, which means futuristic technology and stuff. OP gets to set the year PT: Past time, which means past technology and stuff. OP gets to set the year. PMT - PMT is almost modern technology, technology that isn't out yet, but is in development. Technology in the 2030s, like New and improved missiles and airplanes. NPCs: Non player characters WARP: an RP that is affected by WA resolutions. Determined by the OP ORBAT - ABBR: ORder of BATtle; usually an extensive list of all troops/divisions/equipment that will or may be used in an upcoming battle. Used to show each side just how many troops are there to avoid confusion. |
