Jack Midler
Day 47 – Entry 1
“Confirmation”

Jack awoke first. He fetched some breakfast, the first pair of mangos he could find, then returned to camp to prepare for the journey back to camp. Jack walked with a confident stride and a grin happily displayed on his face.

The air tasted refreshing and the clouds parted to showcase the wonderful blueness of the sky. The green jungle, in its natural beauty, shined with the morning dew. Jack observed this as he cut up the mangos to feast on in that fine morning.

Just then Lexus awoke from his sleep. He wiped his tiresome eyes as he slowly lifted himself up off the ground. “Good morning!” Jack cried, in a cheerful exclamation.

“Good morning to you too, buddy,” Lexus replied, emphasizing the name.

“You sleep well?”

Lexus passed a hand across the back of his head. “Yeah, as well as sleeping on a rock could be. And you?”

“I slept alright - considering I had you attempting to sneak into my bed all night.”

“Don’t flatter yourself. You’re not my type, metro.”

“I thought I was,” Jack quipped.

The shared a common laughter over their joking as the two trekkers then portioned the mangos. They tried keeping their mouths clean while eating the sloppy fruit. Lexus proved to be a much more clean eater, as Jack ended up with his face covered in mango.

He wiped his face with his shirt, before asking, “All kidding aside, Lexus, how you doing? You happy?”

Lexus paused for a moment as he considered how best to answer this query. “Yeah, I guess I’m happy. What about you?”

Jack stood up, his eyes cast into the jungle, as he studied the beauty of the island. “You know, I can’t remember the last time I was asked that. I’ve been unhappy of late, but…I feel better now. This island…it healed me, in more than one way. I’ve doubted myself, but now I know again that I have my faith. So, yeah, I’m good. I’m definitely happy.”

Lexus appeared befuddled. “The island healed you?” Lexus asked.

Jack spun about in response to Lexus’ question. He caught his eyes staring at him, full of wonderment and doubt. Jack immediately understood a great secret Lexus kept. “The island healed you too, didn’t it?” Jack posed.

Lexus stumbled for a bit before continuing, “I wouldn’t have said it was the island that healed me, but…before I got here, on the plane, my finger was…useless. I couldn’t move it, nothing…but now, it’s good as new.”

Jack formed the largest smile Lexus had ever seen. It stretched across his face from side to side. “But it was the island. I’m a first hand witness to the wonders that occur here, this is no ordinary place. Things that cannot be explained by words or science take place here. I would know, a miracle happened to me…and a miracle happened to you, too.”

Lexus appeared confused but ready to heed Jack’s words. He saw this and patted his friend on the back. Finally, Lexus gave a slight nod.

“Let’s go,” Jack announced, after a bit.

They packed their things and set off back to camp, Lexus closely following behind Jack.

Day 47, Entry 1
"Change in Direction"

Lexus and Jack were making much easier progress through the jungle than the day before. Lexus had decided that Jack had taken a surprising amount of care to convince Lexus to follow him on this trek, and then to hope that he would be able to find a pool. It wasn’t just a good deed, about helping Lexus – although that was definitely, and thankfully, a large part of it – but Jack was getting something out of it too.

Quickening his pace for a moment to walk directly alongside Jack, Lexus asked away.

“After I came out of the water, why did you say ‘thank you’?” Lexus asked.

“It was encouraging to see you do that,” Jack said, finitely.

“Encouraging? I thought it was rather hellish, to tell you the truth,” Lexus replied.

“But you feel better now?” Jack asked.

“It’s a huge relief, yeah,” Lexus sighed.

“Well, there you go.” Jack drew a line under the conversation.

Lexus didn’t really get an answer, but he got an idea. He quickly jumped onto another issue.

“So, what part of you was broken?”

“Nothing physical,” Jack rebutted. Lexus gathered that Jack was very good at extracting answers, but not so much at giving them.

“Are you missing the Hatch?” Lexus asked.

“Not especially, it’s not the most entertaining place on the world.”

“But, there again, your options are rather limited to the beach and the Swan,” Lexus added.

“Yeah, the vinyl collection holds more appeal when you put it like that. It means I can escape some of our fellow survivors too,” Jack said.

“That’s a definite plus.”

“Although, it does mean I can be a more distant from the camp. Like you, Lexus, I didn’t really know until this trip.”

“It is true, it can take a while to fully comprehend how wonderful I am,” Lexus joked.

“You flirt in reverse, flattering yourself instead of me, you strange child,” Jack replied.

“Who said I was flirting?” Lexus retorted.

“Oh, I’m sorry, it’s just the way you’ve followed me around for the past two days.” Jack flashed his trademark smile.

“I’m not following you because I want to contend for your time with a mirror...” Lexus sniped, making Jack laugh, “But it would be something to do with the fact that you insisted that I came along on some mysterious trek, so I’m following you so I know where I am... although actually, where are we?”

Jack did not halt as he replied, “I’m not entirely sure.”

“But we’re going to carry on wandering through the jungle anyway?” Lexus dubiously asked.

“Unless you want to go back on ourselves by about four hours. This way is more adventurous!” Jack argued.

“You’re hoping we find something, aren’t you?” Lexus asked.

“No, I didn’t deliberately head this way. But it’s worth exploring what this Island has to offer,” Jack said, with a hint of anticipation and excitement.

“Well, just don’t get us both killed,” Lexus remarked.

“Oh no. I have no intentions of dying myself,” Jack said, smirking. Lexus laughed.

“So, you know, now you know me and all, would you trust me with scissors near your vulnerable ikkle neck to do something with your wretched hair?!” Lexus asked, irritated, referencing a previous conversation.

“I may now feel safe sleeping near you, Lexus, but I’m still saying no to the scissors.”

“Charming,” Lexus replied. He had to admit, he was enjoying his walk. The scenery, although they didn’t quite know where they were, was impressive. For once, they weren’t completely surrounded by trees, but rolling hills were visible in the distance. The range of shades of green would have been impossible anywhere else. Jack Midler, although still keeping many of his cards to his chest, had opened up enough so that he was no longer just an extension of the keyboard in the Swan. Without the pressure of the ocean pressing down on his mind, he was having a good time.

Day 47
Linda Lee

On safe ground, Linda stands out of the reach of the undulating ocean as it extends watery fingers towards her bare feet, back to the perpetual uneasiness that is the jungle with its shadowy painful memories waiting to drag her down into its depths never to be seen again, as far as she can walk from the camp without Father Krill becoming a concerned silhouette on the horizon.

Dabbing a bit of damp sand on her blouse in an attempt to rub out the spit up Shin managed to get past the burping cloth, she succeeds enough to turn her thoughts elsewhere, anywhere else than the feeling of heaviness that seems to stay on her every waking moment. Self conscious in touching on the soft bulge that persists in reminding her that she gave birth two weeks ago, that she is no longer 18 and strolling the beaches of California in a bikini enjoying the longing looks of men as she passed them by.

In dusting the remainder off her hands, she catches a reminding glance of a small scratch scar on her wrist and covers it with a dismissive rubbing, glad for the diversion from memory to see someone else approaching, by his twitch of mouth that may pass for a smile, the man she has heard called Laz is about to speak to her.

He looks odd out in the open as she struggles to remember seeing him any place but peering out like a hermit crab from his lair, he has an accent and barters from a large bag, that she knows only these two things about him is cause for a bit of nervousness so far from the safety of camp. Yet, she smiles as if they are old friends while slipping her hand around the sharp stick in her pants pocket, “Good morning- Laz.”

“What- what do I do about this- fear Ripley?”

“Put it in its place. There is cause for it here and no shame in feeling it, I do every day, what you cannot do is let it rule you. Be vigilant, be prepared, be its master.”

“Good morning Linda.” cordiality clearly taking some effort on his part, “Lovely day for a walk.” Right hand turning up to catch a few drops of the light rain with another facial twitch.

“Rainwater is supposed to keep your hair soft, so I don’t mind,” Summoning her small talk training with a light tilt of head and smile to disarm, “What brings you out this way?”

“If it does not upset you to ask,” proffering an out politely, “Could you tell me where you were held by the Others?”

Tensing about the mouth, “You aren’t thinking to- go-"

“No, no,” waving lightly, “In the contrary.” Slightly off in his use of the idiom, “I want to know where not to go.”

“Oh,” hand to her breast, “I thought you meant- about the place. You mean- where like the direction?”

“Yes, the- geographic location.” Laz clarifies.

Looking over her shoulder, “I- think we traveled at least a day while I was still out of it, which direction, I don’t know.” she admits, “The first place I remember was a cave with doors. I think she said it was an abandoned station, uhm- something to do with water.” Grimacing apologetically for the uncertainty, “Anyway, I do know that we traveled South from early morning to a couple hours before night to reach the water caves, several miles.”

“A cave with doors?” Laz singles out curiously.

“I know, it sounds crazy but we were in this, uh, open faced cave with a passage off to one side that lead to a huge set of heavy doors and there was an opening on the left of the passage that lead to a clearing with a beautiful fall fed pool- and an outhouse.” Blushing to recall, “Even had that silly crescent moon on the door.”

“A cave with doors and an outhouse?” looking rather more amused than doubting.

“Honest,” Linda swears, “As wobbly and pregnant as I was, somewhere to sit was more memorable than might be considered normal. She guessed it was there for the people who were doing the construction. After we went,” body turning to orientate as she was that day, “East away from the cave, she moved,” hand snaking lightly, “pretty much along the foot of the mountains, always South and- we didn’t run into anything or anyone.” Shrugging, “That’s about all I can remember.”

“Quite enough, thank you.” Laz responds with an extended hand, “Enjoy your walk.”

“You’re welcome, I guess you too. You plan to be gone a while?” She solicits carefully pointing to the light pack slung over his shoulder.

Shrugging, “I have never been one for crowds.”

Laughing in light appreciation, “I was just thinking how I used to love to go to the beach on weekends with all those people around. I don’t think I’ll ever want to see a beach, or feel safe in a crowd of people ever again after this.- Be safe Laz.”

“And you.”

Minding his departure with half jealous interest, Linda tracks his gaze, first back towards the camp, then North. With a glance and half smile more relaxed than his first efforts, Laz walks away moving East with a securing shrug of the pack to casually vanish into the jungle as if it is no place to fear.

Maybe if she had more than a sharp stick and did not need at least one hand to support Shin all the time, or the memories of what lies somewhere in its depths, she’d be one of those people off exploring or foraging.

No, she stands here on safe ground, trapped between an Ocean she has no boat to ride on and a jungle she can hardly force herself to enter even to use the bathroom, bound by responsibility and fear to stay in one place for the sake of her son.

Even now, she can detect the thin sound of his crying and Catherine’s shape emerging from the edge of the camp to signal her need to return to the camp confines and nursing duties.

No, she isn’t 18 and carefree any more. Looking East a moment with a, “Wait for me.”, forced down by her closing throat, Linda turns to the West with a sigh. Mommy time.

Jamie had managed to talk his way into the button shift for the morning. Some time alone with this mysterious computer would be good for his nagging curiosity he thought. There were others in the station of course, but they were nowhere to be seen, and Jamie preferred it that way. Better to avoid people asking, or trying to stop him.

He didn’t think anybody would do, but since the video explicitly said not to use the computer for anything else, there might be some people who would object to breaking rules even if they do seem redundant. Just as he was about to try something, the alarm went off.

4 8 15 16 23 42 – Execute

Quiet again. In different circumstances Jamie might have competed against himself, seeing how quickly he could stop the alarm after it went off. Right now though, there were other things on his mind. He bashed away at the keyboard: ‘kjlajhbjgbkl’... Nothing. Then a thought came to him, something Lexus mentioned a few days earlier. He
wondered if the computer was actually connected to anything, let alone some kind of internet, but still, it was worth a try.

www.google.co.uk – Execute

Nothing happened. Had he expected that suddenly the computer would shift and look like his own one at home? That suddenly the world would be accessible from this machine built apparently for one purpose? He wasn’t even sure what he would have done had Google appeared on screen. Searched “Help, I’m a survivor of a plane crash on some creepy island in the middle of nowhere” most probably, but nothing would have come of that.

Not to be defeated, he tried something different. Ctrl-Alt-Delete gave nothing either. “What do you do? Come on, you’ve gotta be hiding something in there...” He began typing in random words, desperate for something to happen. He wondered if his actions had triggered some kind of alert system back wherever these DHARMA people came from, perhaps they would respond if he carried on.

“It won’t do anything interesting you know...” Ed was standing in the doorway to the computer room. He must have been watching for a while now, but Jamie hadn’t noticed him.

“Oh. I wasn’t, I mean... I didn’t mean to...” Despite his relationship with Alex, Jamie didn’t want to cause trouble with people above him in the survivor heirachy.

“It’s fine. I tried the same, though not for nearly as long as you did.”

Clearly he had been watching for a while then. Perhaps he had heard the alarm and, assuming the computer unmanned, came to push the button.

“Well, I thought maybe I could use it to get someone’s attention in the outside world. Still don’t know how it was going to work, but part of me thought that it would”

“You realise it’s probably not connected to the internet?”

“Well, I did wonder if the internet was even invented when this thing was put down here...”

Ed laughed a little “Well, anyway, I don’t think it will work. It looks like someone might have fixed it, or at least done something to it. Some wires back there have been messed with.”

“What could that mean then?”

“No idea. Yet. I’d love to try and figure it out, but I have other places I need to be. I’ll probably see you later on, unless you decide you’re gonna stay in here until that computer does what you want...”

Ed left, and Jamie was again alone with the disobedient computer. 42 minutes still on the clock, he leant back in the chair and waited for the alarm to go off again. This would be the last push of his shift, but he would beat 23 seconds...
