<Ananke> The person whose name he's not sure of is I'm thinking Leilas/Caras Way. <Ananke> She started out invading, then joined Pacific Defenders and later RLA. <Ananke> Also, while FRA might have been influenced some by RLA I think they got more from EAA and Arfon. |

Aha! Thank you, Ananke. Beats me about EAA or RLA influencing FRA. We were always friendly with EAA, but I don't know who influenced FRA first/most. *shrugs* |

Main Nation: Xhadam Who was I? RLA, Allied States of EuroIslanders Military, and at one point ADN Who trained me? I don't know that I was ever mentored per se; if I had to pick someone it would be EuroSoviets, through Drake Farm and Danitoria were extremely helpful as well in understanding the basics. Other than that most of my training simply came from running defenses with Drake Farm and the ASE military, then the ADN, and learning on the fly from observation and practice. By the time of the RLA I had enough experience to take second in command there under EuroSoviets as I recall while being in charge of the ASE regional military, and then later ran the RLAF with Caras Way/Leilas in second command for most of that period. Long time ago though, I may be missing or misremembering details, in particular about the early RLA. |

Main nation: Naivetry Defender Organizations: E-Army, FRA non-member region ally, or whatever they used to call that Who trained you: Equilism training manuals I've been chatting about this with Uni and Kog, but let me clarify why Equilism's training lineage is a little fuzzy. Just going by the listed authors on the posts on the forum, our training materials were written and/or modified by various ADNers and Equilismers, including Ostendt, Equility, Phoenix, Nooterland, Adyndril, and Astarial. I remember West talking about other players who contributed prior to the creation of our current forums in 2004, but Ostendt was the big one. Anyway, by the time I arrived in August 2006, our manuals had been written, translated from Dutch, tweaked, rewritten at least twice, supplemented with material borrowed from the ADN, and then edited to incorporate new rules and information... there are three complete sets of training manuals on our forums prior to the one I wrote in 2009, and possibly a few more incomplete sets floating around. And while I believe the manuals were usually posted by the military minister at the time, other officers usually had a chance to give approval and input... which means Westwind, Moo-cows, and others likely contributed as well with stuff they had learned from working with other defenders in the ADN, GLA, and elsewhere. So we have no very clear generational lines; the manuals I learned from were the products of a long, evolving tradition, where bits of stuff that Ostendt or Phoenix had written could still be found next to edits about Influence from Adyndril or Astarial, all worked out in the context of intense collaboration with defenders across NS. Due to the interruption caused by Imperial Equilism, my first mission wasn't until March of 2007 (in Freedom, against DEN and COTG), when The Merlion was serving as our military minister. It was under his leadership that I got my first hands-on experience, but because the E-Army was heavily centered around missions posted on the forum with little communication over instant messenger or IRC, it was largely a question of trusting what you had learned from the written training courses and following orders posted on the forum... nothing like the real-time instruction given to newbies nowadays. Merl introduced a few major changes to the E-Army, including service records and the use of switchers. We picked up the use of internet clocks for synchronization when we started defending with the FRA, and moved a lot of our activity to IRC at that point to better coordinate with updaters outside Equilism. But while Merl was a huge influence on my first practical experience of defending, the core of my mentality and approach still goes back to those manuals and the influence of Ostendt in teaching Equilism how to defend when we were a baby region in early 2004. So I have no idea where you should put me generationally, but it should probably be somewhere in the House of Ostendt. Both Wham and I should be after Astarial generationally, because Asta was serving as military minister in Equilism and had tweaked the manuals in use when I joined. Don't know whether Ady and Asta were roughly contemporary or whether Asta would consider Adyndril her mentor. You might want to check with Wham about this, but iirc he came in afterwards when either Tarricoe or Felasia was serving as military minister... and if you want to put Fel in there somewhere, he should be in my generation if in the House of Ostendt. He joined Equilism a few weeks earlier than I did. EDIT: ...whoa, didn't realize how long that post was until it went up. Sorry!

Asta has pointed towards Adyndril as her mentor, and towards Ady being trained by Westwind. Wham has pointed toward Westwind as his mentor |

Makes sense... I do seem to remember West and Wham working together a lot when Wham was getting started. To be clear, West had a lot to do with training me, too... but in NS history and feeder politics stuff more than defending.
