"Continuing run through of test data sample 123. Previous testing showed little change when placed into highly gamma radiated environment, will now attempt new findings by changing its surroundings to that of intense solar heat simulation..."

Speaking aloud so that the visual recording module could hear her, Susan Storm walked towards the computer control panel and began to input the pass code in which to activate the change in surroundings. The sample she was working with was that of Ben Grimm, testings its durability for any changes since their last test of it. It was also to try and see if a cure could be made, as that was one of her main goals to this day. She knew that he had accepted it, but also realized how much of a burden it was to look as he did. At first, it had been somewhat more simple to do this kind of testing, but since the disbanding of their team, the young scientist was all that remained within the Think-Tank of the Baxter Building.

Ben had begun working with SHIELD, a decision she found somewhat surprising and Johnny had disappeared to who knows where. Things hadn't really gone well for the two of them after their father's funeral and emotions had been high for everyone. Doing things to keep herself busy was what kept her from worrying over her little brother. Though she knew that he could take care of himself, she just wished that she could have helped him with his grief better. Especially since he felt so bad about having an argument with him before his death. Susan hadn't did any better, but she was somewhat starting to find acceptance.

As for Reed, in truth she could careless where he was. The man had finally crossed a line in which she could no longer accept, and had taking his testing too far. It was a different matter when you could forget to meet someone over dinner because you were working on a cure for cancer, she had come to understand that he at times allowed his work to run his life. But he had gone to the point where he had placed nanites within their systems and didn't ask for their opinion before doing so. She couldn't understand what the man was thinking anymore, or how he could just abuse their trust as he had. He never gave her a reason for his actions either, which made it all the more clear that they could never have a relationship, especially not an honest one.

Just thinking about how close she had been to marrying him, how much she had loved him to only see that his love was completely to his work. It hurt...but she wouldn't let herself cry over him, she'd done that too many times before. Susan was over Reed Richards and that would be the end of it. Remembering her work, the blonde swiftly placed her goggles over her eyes and then turned towards the testing area and awaited the results of this experiment.

James Rhodes wasn't exactly joyous about coming to the Baxter Building today. He was coming as a bearer of bad news. From all of S.H.I.E.L.D's data, Reed Richard was missing and presumed dead after an explosion occurred at his parents' home. Reed was staying with his parents after the disbanding of the Fantastic Four. Before the explosion, Reed was suppose to turn over all of the classified S.H.I.E.L.D flies and experiments he had stored at the Baxter Building.

With his presumed death, that was no longer possible. The secret corridors of Reed's Labs were only accessible to a certain few, and to say the least, even S.H.I.E.L.D had a hard time cracking the security systems placed up by the young scientist. S.H.I.E.L.D knew that Susan Storm would be one of the few people to actually have access to these secret levels of the Baxter Building.

When James heard of what happened, and what needed to be obtained, he knew that he had to be the one to do it. Howard Starks, the father of Tony Starks pulled some strings and had James enrolled into the Baxter Building when Rhodes was younger. While Reed and Susan were a lot younger than himself, James had enormous encounters with the duo, and even Susan's little brother Johnny.

James knew that with the death of Susan's father, the events of Ultimatum, the disbanding of the Fantastic Four, and the apparent betrayal by Reed, that Susan's state had to be a fragile one. The US Colonel thought that the news of Reed's death would be easier to take from someone familiar.

With ease, and fully clothed in his government issued Colonel uniform, James Rhodes made his way into the Baxter Building. As he walked the halls, a eerie feeling went down the man's spine. James was use to the halls being filled with such life, but now all he felt and saw was emptiness and death.

Rhodes made his way into the labs and spotted Susan doing some sort of experiment. He swiftly grabbed a pair of goggles laying around and placed them on. With the walk of a Colonel, James made his way up to the women. He stood next to her, with his eyes on the testing area, and a smirk on his face.

“So is this were you've been hiding yourself Sue?” His smirk turned to a full smile as he continued 'Sooo... what are we looking at?"

Susan looked towards the door as it opened, almost as if she were expecting someone to appear. Of course, it wasn't who she had in mind, but it was still a nice surprise. James Rhodes, or rather Colonel Rhodes, with his military attire and a pair of goggles, moved up to her side as he smiled towards her. She wasn't aware that people had been looking for her, but then, she hadn't really left the building in the recent months. Her work kept her busy, and that was what she needed, something to keep her busy and to focus her thoughts.

"At the moment, the results of Ben's skin sample against intense solar rays. I'm trying to see if it has had any changes in its structures since the last time we worked with him. Recently, hes been somewhat shedding and I'm worried about what that could mean...."

Susan kept her gaze upon the testing area, almost as if expecting the worst so that she'd know what to do. Though after a few more seconds, the machine stopped and she sighed as she removed her goggles. So it wasn't due to the sun's ray, that meant that it was something more complex. Walking away from the colonel, the young woman looked over towards James and smiled while approaching the small orange plate on the steel stand. She knew that he had to be here for something other than a personal visit, he was dressed for work after all.

Of course, she was as well with her brown dress slacks and a navy blue tank top under her lab coat. With black flats that suited the somewhat casual work appearance, Susan preferred this over her typical uniform that was always required in Reed's opinion. In truth though, she somewhat missed it as it now hung in a closet along with the other hero outfits that the brilliant scientist had crafted for their team.

"So brings you here Colonel? I know that this couldn't be completely a social visit...."

James watched and listened intensely as Susan conducted her experiment. The girl was brilliant, and to top it off, beautiful. Rhodes could never understand how Reed could let someone like Susan slip away, it was a completely dumb move by a very young genius. The research she was doing for Ben Grimm was amazing, and showed exactly why the woman held high honors in the Colonel's eyes.

When Susan began to question the motive behind James' visit, with ease James inched his way towards Susan. Rhodes stopped a couple of feet away from the testing area and then answered “Yes, your right, this isn't a social visit. I am here on the behalf of S.H.I.E.L.D to collect some classified files, and experiments that Reed was working on with the government. I need access to the lower levels of the Baxter Building. Reed was suppose to turn over all the flies and experiments to S.H.I.E.L.D., but...”

He wished that he could of delayed what he was about to say, but he knew there was no point in doing such. Slowly he took off his black government issued shades. Behind them was a face of seriousness.

“There was a explosion Sue.” He paused, but only became he dreaded the words that were about to come out of his mouth. “There was a explosion at the Richards Residence, and Reed was inside... We have reason to believe that Reed Richards is dead."

Susan listened to Rhodes, smirking as she figured that would be the case. After all, Reed was one of the smartest minds out there, why wouldn't SHIELD have him working on something for them? She had even heard of some of his projects, though he shared little about them due to the fact that they were for his eyes only. So they had come to collect his results, but why come here without Reed? It sad that she received her answer, and it was one that she wasn't ready to hear.

"Reeds.....dead?"

Now the Colonel had her full attention, blue eyes looking at him from her glasses, her head shaking slowly from one side to the next. This couldn't be right, Reed couldn't be dead. He'd survived explosions before, and countless of other things. The man....the man would have a plan for just about anything and everything, he couldn't just simply be dead. Within moments, she soon found herself trying to rationalize this, coming up with reason why SHIELD's intelligence was wrong.

"Reed would have a back up plan for something like this! He'd have made some kind of escape route for his family! Reed can't be dead James, you know him!"

Her tone was that of panic and desperation. Susan hated Reed for what he had done, but he was one of her closest and dearest friends. She never in her right mind would have wished him or his family harmed. The young woman's breathing was heavy as she continued to look at the man, lowering her gaze as she removed her glasses from upon her face. This was just something she couldn't accept. She could accept many things, but this was something that could not register within her thoughts. Reed dead....that would be like Johnny actually becoming a responsible adult. It was possible, but unlikely.

"Are....are you sure that SHIELD checked every possible area around the explosion? They could be alive out there...or even kidnapped by someone..."

The truth was, James did know Reed, and he wanted to believe so bad that Reed had some type of “just in case” plan. If not that, he wanted to believe that Reed was maybe kidnapped, or transported to another universe, anything but the worst case scenario. However, no matter how much he wanted to believe, he still had to rest with what was known.

“S.H.I.E.L.D's Intelligence has reported that there was a energy flux detected on Reed's computer before the explosion... Because of the amount of information that Reed had access to, S.H.I.E.L.D was monitoring him... all the way up to the explosion. We have voice recordings, gps, and surveillance imaging of the final moments before the explosion.”

James paused and then took a seat in one of the chairs located in the lab. He then continued “There was a knock on the door before the explosion. As previously stated, Reed got a alarm on his computer that a energy flux was detected. Reed tried to warn his dad... but it was already too late. At the current time the type of energy used in the attack is unknown. What is known about the energy is that it was powerful enough to incinerate everything.....So no bodies were found, or anything else for that matter.... only dust”

Slowly James stood up and walked closer to Susan. With ease he whispered into her ear “But you are right... I do know Reed, and I have seen him escape certain death more than once.... Susan... keep searching if you must.... but please.... please... don't let your search for him consume you.”

As Rhodes whispered into her ear, Susan closed her eyes as she wasn't sure what to do at this point. She could believe SHIELD and accept that the Richards were dead, or attempt to go and look for him herself. Part of her wanted to do just that, find him so she could yell at him some more for all that had happened, another part simply wanted to leave it as it was. All proof showed that there was no possible way for him or anyone to make it out. Not to mention, that she believed without a doubt that SHIELD would keep a close eye on everything he did, he had their information and private data.

"I....I understand....."

Susan managed to say this as calmly as possible, biting her bottom lip as to try and fight back the tears. She didn't want to cry for him, because she wanted to believe that he was dead, that his family was dead. Crying would only decrease the chances of her mentally believing this to be the truth. So, the young woman fought it, gripping the side of the lab table behind her as she kept her gaze low for the time being. Her body was still facing the Colonel, but her eyes were set upon the ground.

Susan remained like this for a little longer, trying to force this thought into her head. She would look for him, she wouldn't cry for him. Reed was alive and he was still the most intelligent person she knew. His brain was constant force that kept moving, he'd have found a way to save himself. He would have done something or attempted to try and escape. Susan repeated this mentally over and over, but soon she found herself crying. It was silent at first, but then it started to turn into soft sobs.

James saw it in her eyes. Obviously she was having an internal battle, and he didn't need to be on S.H.I.E.L.D's Psi-Division to figure out exactly what it was over. Soft sobbing sung the words of the woman's heart.

James took a firm stance before her and said, “It's alright, I understand.” And yes he did. In the events of Ultimatum, James lost friends by the hundreds. Fellow S.H.I.E.L.D members, old friends, and even family.

He wrapped his arms around his old friend and said “We can't allow the darkness of yesterday to pull us down.... or we will not stand a chance against tomorrows fight. So mourn... mourn, but when the season for mourning ends... mourn no more.” Not many people got the luxury of seeing this side of the Colonel, Susan was one of the special few.

As he embraced her with a hug, he saw himself standing in the gap for Richard Storm, one of his former teacher, and for Reed Richard. He know why he had to be the one to come, and deliver the news. James knew that he had to be there for an old friend.

Susan rested her hand upon his chest, her tears still slowly flowing down her face. She remained like this for some time, just allowing herself to cry. She hadn't done this in some time, trying her best to be almost like a rock, to feel nothing. Yet this was something she couldn't hold back any more. All this death, all the people she loved disappearing around her, it was too much. Determined as she was, she felt helpless and unable to do anything that mattered. Even this research she was doing to try and help Ben seemed pointless.

But as she listened to Rhodes speak, she understood what he meant. Her time for mourning was almost over, and she'd have to move on if she was to live her life. Her father wouldn't want to see her like this, nor would Johnny, Ben or Reed. Her father would probably had said the same thing that Colonel had, and it would still have the same truth behind it. She couldn't let the past haunt her and hold her within it pain. She would move on, and she'd do what she could to try and make things better for those around her.

The young woman then pulled herself back from the military figure, looking up at him and smiling slightly as she wiped her eyes with the side of her finger. Rhodes was a good friend, one that she knew and trusted greatly. Though there were moments that she did not trust SHIELD, Susan did find herself trusting him. He always seemed to have his heart in the right place. Sighing as she allowed herself to regain her structure, she then allowed her hand to gently push her hair back over her shoulder.

"Thank you James.......I feel...I feel a lot better...."

Susan knew that she wasn't completely OK, but she was good enough for the moment. Right now, she needed to help him retrieve the information in which Reed had been working on. It wouldn't be that hard to get into his lab, since he had given her most of the passwords and she'd learned some hacking skills from their time working together. But it had been some time since she'd gone to the lower levels, which made her wonder just how much of Reed's work was still functional?

" The elevator to the lower levels should be right down the hall to the left. Once we're there, should arrive at the first security panel.."

Swiftly James began to stroll down the hall. He was refocusing his mind on what he needed to obtain. James dug inside his uniform's suit jacket and pulled out his customized ipad. His right fingertips supported the back of the ipad, and his left fingertips moved across the screen.

“Open up connection with Command Control.” The screen went completely black, and then a S.H.I.E.L.D icon popped up onto the screen

“Yes Colonel.” said a female S.H.I.E.LD agent.

“Upload a database of everything I need to locate and collect.”

“Yes sir, and what format would you want the documents in ? Visual?... Audio?....Written?"

“Hi-def, 3D visual flies, with audio commentary.”

“Yes sir, They will be sent to your war-pad in exactly 3 seconds, Command Center out.”

The flies opened up on the war-pad. Holographic images came through the S.H.I.E.L.D logo on the screen. Rhodes scanned through the holographic flies, using his pointing finger and ring finger to shuffle through the items he needed to collect. And He used his pointing finger, and thumb to change the height and depth of the images.

James reviewed the flies as he waited for Susan to open up the first Elevator.
