- Setting: The Office of Director Nick Fury, 0900 Hours
Bzzzt. "Sir, our sensors are picking up a major energy flux over the former site of the Xavier Institute,"
"Bring it up on the main screen," Fury requested, clearing his monitor and facing the large holographic interface. A wire-frame image of the lot that had once held Xavier's mansion emerged, rotating a full 360 degrees before satellite imagery mapped itself over frame and completed the three dimensional display, "Run a full spectrum scan, I want complete readings on the anomaly. This may be what we've been waiting for people,"
Fury turned his back on the image, staring out the large window behind the desk at a stunning view of New York City. The view flickered momentarily, betraying the science at work, then faded to reveal what was truly on the other side: a busy command center with S.H.I.E.L.D. analysts hurriedly attending to the endless stream of data the outpost processed. The government had insisted S.H.I.E.L.D. focus on the apprehension of mutants, leading to a disagreement that nearly cost Fury his job. He had often acted as the bridge between the government and the superhero community, he knew firsthand there were greater threats out there.
"Gotcha, you sonuvabitch," the Director said through a rare smile as he returned to the hologram table and the collection of readings that were being updated. Since the Ultimatum Wave, S.H.I.E.L.D. had been dealing with a problem most people dismissed as a hoax. Supernatural encounters, demons, possessions -- maybe not the battle between heaven and hell, but definitely a war not of this world.
Dr. Strange's Sanctum Sanctorum had held all kinds of secrets and mystical objects S.H.I.E.L.D. could have spent years analyzing without a breakthrough. However, the building also served as a bridge between mystic and dark dimensions -- more accurately it had been the sealed door between the two. With it's destruction during the Ultimatum Event, untold horrors had been unleashed upon the unsuspecting city.
"Who do we have in the area," Nick Fury finally asked. Resources had been spread thin with the current President's crusade against mutants, concessions had to be made in order to allow Fury to maintain what most officials viewed as 'ghost hunts'.
"...Um,"
"How many is 'um'?" Fury interrupted impatiently.
"None, sir. Dispatch lost contact with Alpha and Bravo when the anomaly was detected,"
Fury swore under his breath, "How soon can we get a full Hulkbuster unit in the area?" They'd be playing with second string naturally, they maintained Hulkbusters specifically for their namesake, but they also represented some of the toughest units S.H.I.E.L.D. could muster. No more chances, it was time to bring out the big guns.
