Zero had taken a break from his studies to roam the grounds. After walking a ways away from the school, he found the maze garden. He had heard from a third year that if you find your way to the end, there would be a prize or something. He started to walk in, knowing that he could just fly over it. But, he fancied a challenge now and then, and he doubted it would take long. |

Another vampire already wandered within the maze. Takai had finished his schoolwork, and had sought another way to pass the time. Already wandering for over an hour, Takai had no intention of finding the center of the maze. In fact, he wasn't even paying attention to where he was going, he just walked. As he walked, he thought. About nothing in particular, just whatever crossed his mind at that second. What a strange looking plant, he thought one second, but the next, Another one has entered. This thought temporarily brought him back to reality. Takai was acutely aware of every being in the maze at the moment. As he sensed another vampire, he tucked that thought in with the others. A couple female witches, a spellcaster of some sort - strong magic aura, a female vampire, and now a male vampire. With that last thought, Takai let himself be carried away into nothingness again. Nothingness marred only by the tiny smudge that was the knowledge of those nearest to him, which his conscious would not let him forget. |

Having found quite a bit of free time on her hands during her first year at the school (though less free time than she would have had at home), the young witch had taken to wandering through the maze quite often. Each time she strolled through the it, she tried to make an internal map of the place. Her ultimate goal was to find the center and be able to get back to it without getting lost; as she searched, she also explored every turn and dead end and tried to place them on the map. So, she was in no rush to "beat the system" as others were so anxious to do. She took great pleasure in the peace she found on the seemingly lonely paths; she was accustomed to the solitude, and, in fact, found it a nice escape from the friends she was (surprisingly) making; she really enjoyed being with them, but, being so used to having no one, found the constant company overwhelming at times. Presently, the freshman walked at the pace of death through the paths near the left center of the maze. Making an internal map was proving quite difficult, since she had to keep back-tracking; next time she would have to bring a pad and pencil and sketch out a rough idea of the place. Right then she had a rather accurate idea of where she was and guessed that, if she walked towards the right, she would eventually stumble upon the middle. However, she really wanted to explore the "outer rim" first ("Outer rim?" she thought. "I might need to lay off the reading for a time.") and then find the center of the maze last. So she walked leisurely down the paths and made mental notes. |

Kasumi walked into the maze, amazed by how big it seemed to be. She had heard about it, just from around really, and wanted to see for herself. She walked and came upon a fork. She went left and kept going. What happens if i reach the middle...I wonder...Something big maybe, or even just a small clearing of grass. That would be cool to find it! |

Upon reaching the center, Zero found the most amazing sight. A koi pond was in the middle, a bridge connecting the side he was on and the opposite. Right after the bridge was a pagoda surrounded by roses of different colors. He decided to pick a few for Serena. He stuck to mainly dark colors but added a bright pink one in the middle. |

The high, thick hedges of the maze surrounded Takai on all sides. This stopped the roaming vampire in his tracks. How can this be possible?! he wondered, his wandering mind wrenched away from whatever random thing that had caught his attention. The maze was not magical, as far as Takai knew, and the hedges could not move. But he was boxed in! Unexpected as it was, the vampire kept his cool. He slowly turned in a circle, scanning the small, enclosed area. Perhaps it's just a trick of the light and I can't see where I entered. No such luck. Maybe one of the magic-wielders manipulated the bushes to mess up some of the other students? But even as he thought it, Takai knew his next guess was incorrect. It did not feel like magic. Takai stopped searching, stopped spinning, stopped moving entirely. His entire body relaxed, the tall frame slouching from his excellent posture just a bit. He closed his eyes and focused on his other senses. The vampire sniffed, and could smell the leafy, green scent of the hedges surrounding him. He faintly could smell another couple of students who were off to the right of where he stood. The scent of flowers, freshly picked, blew to Takai on a slight breeze. Birds chirpped, small animals rustled in the underbrush, nothing abnormal. When he strained, Takai could even hear the soft footfalls of another student on the grassy path. Downwind, he heard a noisier student running. Nothing touched Takai's cold skin. Nothing... except a slight warm breeze from his left. That's it! Takai took a step into the wind, and another. Slowly, carefully, he moved into the wind. In only a few steps, he brushed against the hedge. With his eyes still tightly shut, Takai reached through the hedge, and found that his arm did penetrate the bush! Now opening his eyes, Takai pulled his arm back, and examined what he had found. All he saw was an area where the bushes grew thinner. Perhaps the hedge just grew together... Could it be...? But no, the rest of the maze was clean and well defined. It must be a trick, Takai surmised, Just another obstacle to overcome to reach the center of the maze. It was the only place he had ever seen where even light could be seen from the other side of the hedge! And this spot was thin enough that he could probably squeeze through it! Not sure how he entered the small area, Takai decided to use the new exit he found. Not that he had much choice. He ducked his head and navigated his lanky body through the thin area of the bushes. As he came through to the other side, he began to straighten his body, and bumped right into a figure! When his eyes snapped open, Takai saw nothing. But he heard something. Looking quickly down, Takai saw a girl lying on the ground. He must've accidentally pushed her over! Why didn't I sense her? he wondered. Focusing too much on the hedge and not enough on my surroundings, he scolded himself in his head. Meanwhile, he smiled and reached out a hand to help the girl up. "Forgive me, I wasn't watching where I was going." |

'Make a right, walk ten meters, turn left. After about two meters, turn left again. There is a path off to the right about four meters down, but this path continues straight for a while.' Ayako followed the straight path and noted how many other paths she passed on the right. There were seven, and she found no set pattern for how far apart they were spaced. Since she found no paths to the left, the freshman assumed she was at the maze's very edge. This was a good discovery because it meant she didn't have to worry about placing herself so many meters within the maze and try and work her way around from there, readjusting her view of the maze every time she turned a corner. Before she knew it, the path ended and turned to the right; the young witch followed and reminded herself to go back and revisit those other paths she'd passed along the way another time (a time when she had pen and paper). Not noticing any other paths to either side, Ayako wondered if perhaps she had ... Ah! But there was the answer now! A dead end. In order to get a rough estimate of how long this path was, Ayako walked all the way to the hedge. She failed to notice the light from the other side because the older boy, whom she also failed to notice, blocked it. Just as she turned around to retrace her steps -- wham! -- she was knocked to the ground. What had just happened? The only thing behind her was a solid hedge wall! No one else was around. It made no sense. A sudden voice startled her, and she propped herself up on her right arm to see who it belonged to. Standing above her with a smile was an older boy! Stunned, all Ayako could do was take his hand and stand up. Once there, she quickly dusted herself off and managed a reply. "Oh, no, that's all right. I, um ... I didn't see anyone else here. I thought I was alone. ... How ... how did you get there?" Edited by Ayako Sakuma, Monday Jul 20 2009, 08:04 PM.

Kasumi kept walking around not even really noticing where she was going, she just felt like walking. She stopped seeing a huge red flower that seemed to have a purple stem and leaves. She stepped closer and softly touched a petal that was as soft as silk. Of course today is the day I forget to bring my sketchbook she thought smiling. It was rather very pretty. She wanted to pick it and show it to Ryan, but she didn't want to kill it. She walked forward planning on just telling him about it. Her thoughts shifted to Serena as she walked. She had been acting strange lately and Kasumi was worried. Maybe Zero would know...Nah I'm probably just over thinking this. "Oww!" Kasumi said loudly as a sharp pain registered on her ankle. Kasumi looked down at the small scratch. She looked around wondering what had happened. "I probably just got caught on something..." She thought out loud and walked on being more carful where she walked. She started humming and looked up at the cloudy sky wishing she would reach the middle. |

Zero was backtracking his way out of the maze with the flower arrangement he picked for Serena. He wasn't paying attention when he bumped into someone. To his surprise, it was Kasumi, his hime's twin sister. "Ah, sorry Kasumi-san. It was my fault," Zero laughed a little. He looked behind him and said, "The middle is that way, just keep taking rights until you reach the 5th fork and then turn left there." He smiled at her before continuing to walk, slowly though, since Serena was still out cold at the infirmary. Edited by Headmaster Nami, Sunday Jul 26 2009, 08:14 PM.

Takai pulled his hand away as the girl stood up. His hand tingled. That, and the smell of magic surrounding her, informed Takai that she was a witch. As she brushed the dust off herself, Takai took the chance to get a good look at her. She looked to be maybe a half a foot or so shorter than him, and was very thin. Her long, bleached-looking white hair was a little messed up and had a small leaf from one of the bushes in it. She looked very familiar to the vampire. I've probably seen her around school, Takai thought, but could recall no memory of ever seeing her. But she looked so very familiar... "Ah, that..." Takai began, "I came to a dead end, and found that the bushes here," he turned a little and gestured behind him, "are thin enough to squeeze through." He shook his head, "I was so preoccupied, I did not think to look before I stepped through; I apologize." Though he showed a calm and humble expression, inwardly, the vampire was angry at himself for making such a stupid mistake. As he turned back toward the girl, Takai again noticed the leaf in her hair. For some reason, it annoyed him. Without any thought, he reached over and pulled it out of her hair. Her hair was surprisingly soft. Looking unnaturally white, Takai imagined it would be coarse like dyed hair sometimes was. Astonished at his own action, he automatically apologized again, "Sorry..." Ayako's eyes followed his gesture towards the bushes. "O-Oh, I see." She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. "No, don't ... um ... don't worry about it," she assured him as she stumbled over her words. Jeez - how embarrassing! First she fell, then she could hardly manage a sentence. How pathetic was she? Don't look down awkwardly! she scolded herself. That'll just make you seem more shy and uncomfortable. Look directly at him. Show some confidence! So, her gaze slowly rose from the ground towards the older and clearly taller student's face. When it finally reached him, two things immediately caught her attention. The first was the drastic contrast between his dark hair and pale skin. She would have assumed he was a vampire, but then she thought that certain demons, amongst other creatures, could also have pale skin; immediately thinking he was this species or that would be too judgmental and assuming of her. (Suddenly she felt him pull a leaf out of her hair. As he quickly apologized, she blushed lightly and found herself stuttering the same sentence,"No, don't ... um ... don't worry about it," only this time adding a soft, "Thanks.") The second thing that drew her attention where his eyes. They were unlike any she'd seen before, and she couldn't quite figure out why. Certainly they were the darkest - a black that rivaled the night sky. And they had such a depth to them; who knew what laid within them! Immediately she was struck with the perfect comparison. He reminded her of the moon! His pale skin was the bright, shining side she found herself captivated by each night. His eyes were the dark side, the one very few could claim to have seen; they were dark, mysterious, and captivating. But then she adverted her eyes to the side and held one hand within the other to keep them from fidgeting. She felt the heat rise to her face once again, which only made her blush more. She had been staring! This was exactly why eye contact never worked with her. She either stared and felt awkward, or she never once looked at the other person and felt guilty for not making eye contact. She really needed to learn some social skills! |

Kasumi stared after Zero a little surprised. "Wait, please!" she called walking after him. "If you don't mind, may I walk with you?" she asked kind of nervous. She had, of course, heard about Zero from Serena many times and was a little curious. Serena seemed to always be a little vague whenever talking about him. Kasumi looked down at some of the flowers he had in his hand and knew it was for her sister. She smiled to herself, glad that her sister had found someone that made her so happy. Serena...I wonder where she is? Haven't seen her in a while... she thought slightly distracted. |

Takai watched the witch as the witch looked at him. He couldn't understand why, but she was so intently looking at him that he felt like she was looking into him. It almost made him uncomfortable... More than almost... he admitted to himself. But her eyes had taken hold of his, and like a cornered animal, he neither could nor would look away. The next moment, suddenly, her eyes changed colors and dropped as she turned her head. As color rose to her face, Takai wondered what she had seen in him that prompted such a reaction. Reason came like a little whisper in his brain, Witch or not, she can't see my soul. She was blushing, that was all. Not that Takai was going to even try to fathom from among the deep workings of the female mind what brought about the blush. Looking for a change in subject, he realized they had been talking (or at least standing together) for 5-ish minutes, and he still didn't know who he was talking to. And that is always vital information. "I don't believe I caught your name," Takai said, his low voice sounded harsh compared to the silence it broke. The vampire braced himself mentally, sure that the girl would look up at him again. He wouldn't get caught by those eyes again... |

Hearing him ask her name, Ayako’s eyes widened slightly in surprise. How rude and thoughtless of her! To be standing here talking with a complete stranger – after they had run into each other, no less – and not have introduced herself … he must think she was the most impolite person alive! With a deep, penitent bow, Ayako apologized for her error. “Oh, please excuse me! I’m so sorry. How could I have been so disrespectful?” Now she straightened up and looked at him again, realizing for the first time that he was also her senpai. Double the shame on her! She was sure that inwardly he was rolling his eyes and thinking snide remarks about ungrateful freshman like her. “Ayako Sakuma. Please forgive me.” Here she bowed again; then, after about fifteen seconds, she raised her head once more. What was he thinking about her right now? She truly was sorry; hopefully he wasn’t thinking that her apology was insincere because it most certainly was not. Far from it. Oh, how embarrassing! And there really wasn’t anything she could think of that would draw the unwanted attention away from her. |

No matter how much he prepared himself, her eyes still held him captive. "Don't bow to me," he said, "Any disrespect was equal on my part." He finally introduced himself as well, "I'm Takai Kinan Nice to meet you, Ayako Sakuma." What a strange name.... it very much fit the strange girl. A presence was missing from the maze. This startled Takai, because he was only now aware of it. He had been to enraptured by this girl to notice earlier. It just wasn't normal; she was messing with his brain somehow! Casting a spell or something. The only thing wrong with that explanation was that he didn't feel any magic going on. Most any magic this close, the vampire would probably be able to feel. The girl seemed too innocent and timid to be doing something sinister, though that could just be a front to fool him. But her eyes! They changed colors, which Takai had never seen before. Still, that was no explanation for why they were so compelling. Johann would know! he thought suddenly. Captain Johann had more witch stories than one could count! Takai resolved to immediately delve into the Captain's logs once he returned to his dorm. First, he'd have to get out of the maze, and away from the witch. |
