Chomanik sighed, watching a leaf rush by, floating on the water. He had done the best he could to help his sister figure out how to get around the school, but he could tell she hadn't been paying a whole lot of attention to him. Naturally, he couldn't help himself from being worried about her - she always managed to get in trouble somehow. And people at this special school were dangerous. There were haunts quite different from the creatures of the forest here. As jaguars in the rainforest, there weren't any predators to fear, so all they had to watch out for were territorial males.

But Chomanik had come here to relax, and stretch out in his jaguar form. It had been a long journey, and it had been so long since he had changed. At home, he normally would change every couple of days. He took a deep breath, closed his eyes, and exhaled, beginning the change.

First letting his tail and ears come out freely, Chomanik readied himself for the full change. It was still painful, though not nearly as much as it used to be. The pain made Chomanik fall on his hands and knees. His back legs had already begun to shrink and bend the opposite way. Fur coated his body, growing thicker by the second. Sharp claws stretched out of his thick paws, and his face stretched and morphed into the powerful head of a jaguar.

Shaking himself, Chomanik, now fully a jaguar, stretched his large, lean body. First thing he did was grab his pile of clothes gently, trying not to puncture them with his dagger teeth. Stretching again, he jumped into a tree, planted his clothes safely, and flopped down on a large branch.

Kovu popped his neck as he neared the water. Things had been busy lately since Kazehime was so busy with her studies. He wasn't really a student at the school. The only reason he was here was to protect Kazehime so they would not loose the war.

The wolf hadn't shifted in a couple of days, so when he reached the river, he would shift to a wolf. The crystal clear water gushed through rocks here and there. He could see little fish swimming joyfully in the currents.

Kovu looked up to a tree trunk having felt someone was there, but being lazy, he didn't notice the large jaguar sitting on a low branch. He let the change consume him. The 19 year old didn't feel any pain, having learned full control of his form.

Brown fur leaped from Kovu's skin as he knelt down to the ground. It wasn't necessary that he got down on the ground, but he found it easier. His snout grew out and a tail leaped from just above his butt. Before fully changed, he crawled into a bush and took off his clothing. He hid them there and finished changing before crawling out.

Kovu stretched a minute before leaning his powerful jaws into the stream and taking a few laps of the refreshing water. After sighing contently at his drink, he plopped down on the ground next to the river and used a claw to stir little circles in the water. As he drew circles, he heard soft breathing above him. He decided to not let the other person know he was aware that they were there, but he kept his guard up, just in case.

Chomanik had just begun to doze off when a young man approached the river. Instantly awake, he watched silently as the man looked up at him. He remained motionless, except for the slight twitching of the tip of his tail, so Chomanik was sure he wasn't seen. He watched as the man changed into a wolf. Not a small wolf, but smaller than a jaguar. It was a variety of colors, and had a lush coat. The jaguar wondered what kind of wolf it was, for it looked so unlike any wolves he had seen in pictures. The man was quick in his change, and he seemed to have no trouble with it, very much like the old, experienced members of his tribe.

Though the wolf was much smaller than him, Chomanik felt wary, as predators do when they encounter another creature on the top of the food chain. Wolves have exceptional senses of smell and hearing, Chomanik reminded himself, he wouldn't be able to stay unnoticed for long. Perhaps he has already figured me out. But the wolf showed no signs of noticing his presence; he seemed as relaxed and calm as the man who walked in the clearing did. Chomanik decided to observe the wolf for a little longer, not wanting to begin a conflict by revealing himself.

When the person in the tree didn't make a move, Kovu assumed this person was just as cautious as he. The wolf decided to make the first move.

"I know you're there; I mean you no harm," Kovu finally looked up to see the male jaguar sitting on the branch. 'A jaguar shifter no doubt. Probably one of the two that just transfered here like Nami said. Hmmm, this shall be quite interesting,' the wolf thought.

"So, where are you from? I just find other cultures quite interesting," Kovu smiled, barring his large white teeth. He knew he could take the other boy, if the other boy wanted trouble. He could change his size if needed, since the boy was only slightly bigger than he at the moment.

Well, he did notice me, Chomanik noticed. How peculiar that he could talk in his wolf form, though! Even the eldest jaguars in the village could not speak in their beast forms - or perhaps only chose not to. He tried to speak, but found that his mouth would not form the words. Instead, he grabbed his clothes and jumped into a different tree. From there, he landed on the ground and disappeared behind a further tree.

I shouldn't change fully back, Chomanik decided, wary of the wolf. So he would changed to his half-form. He pulled all of the jaguar back into himself, leaving only the tail, ears, and eyes of the cat. Quickly pulling on his clothes, he ripped a hole in his pants for his tail, and walked around the side of the tree, towards the wolf.

"I come from Tikal, though you may not recognize the name. It is in Guatemala," Chomanik answered. He had been speaking English for years now, but still had a moderate accent. Stopping a safe distance away from the wolf, but not too far to stretch the conversation, Chomanik bowed. "May I ask who I am addressing?" As he bowed, he looked away for a second, then his eyes were back on the wolf - who seemed much larger when he was a human.

"Oh," Kovu smiled. He had indeed never heard of that area before. 'Hm, I'll have to look it up later,' he thought and then stood.

"I am Kovu. Don't ask me for a last name, because I don't have one," he chuckled to himself a bit, "And may I ask your name?" He asked this question only to not seem stalkerish. He knew the boy's name, having read his file already. It was his job to do so.

Kovu admired the boy's silver hair. It was bright and glimmered in the sun. He liked that color and wished he had a coat of that shimmering color like his brother had. But, he got stuck with the yucky calico like fur that had mixes of black, brown and grey.

"Chomanik Balachi." Chomanik said, bowing slightly. "A pleasure to meet you, Kovu." He wondered why the wolf didn't have a last name, but decided it would be better not to ask. It might be a touchy subject. Or it could be something simple like the culture he hailed from doesn't have last names. But better safe than sorry, especially when talking to a full grown wolf.

It still felt very strange, to be addressing a wolf and having the wolf reply. When talking to a human (or other creature with a human-like appearance), one could read their face and body language. Chomanik could only guess about the wolf's body language, assuming wolves were like jaguars, with which he was comparing Kovu. He did recognize that they were very different creatures, but they were both top predators, and theoretically would have some of the same physical language.
