Prelude I: A Lost Soul

"Looks like it might rain tonight." A figure was seen standing on a ledge overseeing a small encampment of some sort as he spoke aloud to himself. A hood was drawn over his head creating a shadow that covered his face. In the pale moonlight his skin reflected back with that of a dim grey. The hood was connected to a cloak that draped behind him, the black cloth tatted at the bottom and almost hitting the ground. Black leather armor covered his chest with grey slacks on his feet. Basic looking shoes that looked worn beyond it's years were the only things he could use for foot ware. The man stood at an average height of 5'9 with his lean build being hidden by the cloak.

A sigh escaped from his mouth as he stared off into the distance. It seemed that he was in a deep contemplation. 'I wonder what I should make for dinner? The others all agreed that it should be something that can be shared with everyone seeing that rations are getting low. Rolar recommended a stew. But of what type? Maybe if I can find something in the wilderness I could. But at this time? Ugh yeah right.' Indeed he was in deep thought when something caught his eye in the distance. Another hooded figure like himself was in the distance slowly approaching him it seemed. The new figure wore a similar attire to hide his own appearance and was approaching our overseer fast. Soon, the two met up with each other and a conversation took place.

"Greetings." the one started. "Not many travelers come this far out into the Void. Is there something I can do for you?" His voice was curt at best.

"Actually yes." the second figure stated. His voice sounded very polite and straight forward. "This might come off to be sudden. but you wouldn't happen to have any spare food do you? I can pay you back in gold or any way you desire, I've come a very long way and I-" His sentence was cut off when a loud rumbling was heard, clear that it was his stomach.

The first figure let out a laugh and looked at the stranger with a smile. "You have impeccable timing my friend. Dinner was about to be served. As long as you promise me that you mean no harm to my clan then I will gladly feed you."

"You have my word uh." There was a slight pause before he continued. "What is your name again?"

"Ah. Where are my manners. You can call me Bob. Now come come, let's get you fed. And your name?"

"My name . . . just call me Captain for now."

"Oh? A man for high status now are ya. Very well Captain follow me."

With that the two headed down a path that would take them to the main part of the encampment. A few minutes passed until they finally reached the place. "Home sweet home." The encampment was relatively small. There were a few hobbles that were dug into the base of a stone mountain with wooden planks being used to hold up the entrance to each home. A small riverbed flowed between the various homes. Weak orange lights lit the entrances to the homes, lanterns being used to provide light.

The Encampment

As they passed through there were a few people that were similarly dressed to Bob both male and female. Some had hoods up others hoods down, but they almost all dressed the same and had a symbol marked on their left arm. "All of these people here, are they all Lost Souls?"

"That's right. Myself included." replied Bob as he moved his cloak to the side to show Captain the mark on his left arm. There it was: The mark of the Lost Soul. A flower in the center with two curved triangles overlapping each other. The black marks clearly stood out against Bob's pale skin with the moonlight giving it a clear view. "Every person here is a Lost Soul. Why, does the fact that we are Lost Souls bother you Captain?"

Lost Soul Mark

"No no of course not. I've just never really seen so many in one spot before."

"Really now? The fact that we are Lost Souls truly doesn't bother you? Make you uncomfortable?"

"Well no, why would it?".

Bob stopped leading the way and turned to face Captain. "Lost Souls are seen as the scum of the Void. People who were's able to regain their own sense of identity, people who lost their powers, people who lost their way. No one likes them. A racist view. And you're telling me that the sight of scum just doesn't bother you?"

"I never hated the Lost Souls. Why would I hate them for something that they have no control over?"

"Heh. I like you. I simply wish that there were other's like you that understood our predicament." Satisfied with Captain's answer, Bob once again led the way.

Soon they reached a home that was isolated from the rest to which Bob opened the door and gestured inside. In was a small simple home with only two extra rooms. The first room upon entering was a simple living room with a makeshift kitchen in the back. "Have a seat. Most of dinner is already finished. Just needed one last ingredient."

Time passed and dinner was served. The other Lost Souls over time entered Bob's home to get their share of the stew he cooked and eventually, it was just Bob and Captain eating together in the living room. "So tell me Captain, what does bring you this far into the Void?"

"Well, I'm searching for something. An item that's really important to me."

"Ah, so you're on the hunt then."

"You could say that."

"And what makes this item so special? So important?"

"It was given to me by someone who had passed. A memento if you will."

"Ah. Well say no more then. All that matters is that you find that item. Although if you're looking for it, I can only assume that it was stolen then."

"Unfortunately you are correct."

"A shame. Well, you are welcomed to stay the night and maybe another day more if you will. I won't send ya out at this time of night."

"Thank you Bob, I do appreciate the thought."

Just then, a loud yell came from outside. "Bob!!!"

Bob and Captain both put down their bowls and rushed outside. "What's going on??" Standing in the center of the encampment were six though looking mercenaries that were causing trouble. One of them held a Lost Soul by the neck.

"Let me help." Captain whispered as he attempted to move into the open.

"Stop. Let me take care of this. I don't want you to get involved with our troubles." Bob placed a hand on Captain's shoulder and prevented him from moving. The two exchanged glaces to which Captain let out a sigh and went back into Bob's home. Once Captain was inside Bob took a deep breath and headed straight towards the group of mercenaries. "What seems to be the problem gentlemen? Would you please let down my friend over there."

The man holding the Lost Soul let out a scoff but dropped the Lost Soul who in turn ran to her home. "We, are looking for a man that goes by the name of Captain. Why need him is none of your business. So tell us where he is and we will be on our way."

"He isn't here."

"Don't you lie to me! Your so called friends have already told me that there is a guest staying with you. So bring him out."

"It is true that there was someone here, but he left. You just missed him. A shame. Now leave my encampment so you can look for him elsewhere."

"I don't like that tone you're using with me Lost Soul." There was a venomous emphasis on his last two words as he slowly approached Bob. "Don't forget that you are a Lost Soul and nothing more. Learn your place."

A scoff came from Bob as he looked at the one who approached him with a sharp glare in his white eyes. "And what does that make you then hm? A Loyal Blood? Old Blood? You who seems to be so much greater than I am."

"What's it to you? I could be a Void Walker and still be better than you in every way. Stronger, faster, and more competent than the likes of you."

"Ho? Why don't you try it then?" There was spite in Bob's voice now. That was a direct challenge.

"AHAHHAHAHAHA! You really think you can do anything against me? So be it. Insects like you need to be put in your place." Without warning the muscular mercenary threw a punch at Bob. The punch flew true but to everyone's surprise, Bob caught the fist with ease. A loud smack of flesh to flesh was heard in the encampment. The other five mercenaries were taken aback as the rest of the Lost Souls came out to watch. "Why you-"

"Listen here you little shit. I don't care who you think you are, but don't you ever look down on Lost Souls. Ever." With a shove Bob pushed the mercenary away like it was nothing causing him to stagger back a few feet. Immediately the rest of his crew came and surrounded Bob, weapons draw and ready for a fight. In response Bob simply spat on the ground and put up his fists in front of himself. "Well this should be interesting."

"Oh not so tough now are ya? Get him boys!" A fight was about to break out when another voice broke out from the distance.

"Stop!" Every one turned to the location of the voice to see Captian in the distance running towards the group. "Leave him alone. It's me that you want right?"

"Captian..."

"Heh. I knew he was still here. You lying rat."

"Tch."

"Sorry Bob. I can't let you take this one for me. This is my problem. Oh. The stew was great by the way. I'll have to stop by and get some again." It looked like there was a slight grin that was visible under the hood before the mercenaries were addressed. "You guys wanna tussle that's fine, but we do this outside."

"Fine by me. See you around mongrel." The group of fighters disbanneded from Bob and went after Captain who was leading the group away from the encampment. Bob was left there to watch as his friend sacrificed his safety for the sake of rest of the Lost Souls. And just like that they were gone, no traces of either party left in the encampment.
