Honestly, Dragon Quest 3 has a special place in my heart. Dragon Quest 1 created JRPGs but it's a very simple game while Dragon Quest 2 had a poor grasp how a multi-person party should be and was sometimes frustratingly hard. Dragon Quest 3 is when I feel the series hit it's stride. You could not only pick the setup of your party like in Final Fantasy 1 but change their jobs and effect how they'd develop. Want tank that can cast offensive magic? Turn your Wizard into a Soldier! Want a character with a high crit rate? Turn a Goof-Off into a Fighter! If you want to play Dragon Quest 3, I recommend trying to play the fan translated SNES version. Can't get that, go for the GBC version as it has all the SNES game's features. The NES game was great but the remakes put on some cool improvements. |

Dragon Lord in Training

Despite there being very few opportunities to have a dragon or dragon-transforming mage in your party, the Dragon Quest series has become one of my absolute favorites as of recent years... I want to say maybe 4 or 5 years ago? I first got into the series with Dragon Quest Swords, which is a pretty good spinoff in my opinion. As a spinoff, it takes a completely original (if somewhat gimmicky) control scheme unlike what the series was known for, but maintaining its charming aesthetics (Thank you Mr. Dragonball and whoever made the pretty backgrounds :U), on top of the simple but amusing narrative, the quirky naming schemes, and the WONDERFUL original music. I enjoyed it a ton, and would gladly replay it. But it was DQV that definitely left the strongest impression on me. I can only name one other game with a narrative strong enough to tear me up more than once, especially after so many other games have made me feel rather hard- but the resolution of it all feels just right. That, on top of the entertaining battle design, great music, charming visuals, and whimsical pun translations, have cemented the Dragon Quest series as one of my favorite franchises... even though V's plot sortof stands out as much different than the rest of the series, but hey. :U Aside from that, I've played IV, VI, VIII, and IX (Not counting various other spinoffs). IV was interesting, but I kinda dropped out of it whenever I got lost a while ago. VI's also pretty good, and last I played the plot was getting pretty thick, but I slowed down whenever I started to get indecisive on my plans for party vocations. IX, on the other hand, is arguably my second-favorite of the series. VIII was also impressive in so many ways, but sadly, I'm doubtful of whether my PS2 will start up again, so I may never finish that game... >_> I cannot emphasize enough how hyped I was to hear that an MMO was coming to the Wii and WiiU... nor how disappointing it is to think how little likely it is that we'll receive it. I mean, I get that DQX didn't sell THAT well in Japan, much less in countries where it has smaller fanbases, so I see it as a completely rational business decision... but that doesn't curb my desire to play a Dragon Quest game alongside my WiiU-owning buddehs as one of several neat looking fantasy races.
