One thing I might add is that I'd love to be involved more with the community but here everyone seems to bail out to the skype chat or just sits in the RP section which is a big commitment of time (Which I don't exactly have as much of as I'd like) and things go so slow on other topics that it looses my interest. In the skype group things can go by way to quickly and if you're gone for like a day a bunch of stuff can happen and you'd never even know. Even if you're on 24/7 you can find that you're really bored because people are going on about stuff you don't even know about and will keep going on about it for hours on end. That sort of thing happened to me a lot when I was in the group. Now if you go back to when I was still doing dramatic readings that had brought people in and even if people didn't have a part they listened to the story being read by their friends and I'm sure there were other regular activities that happened where you didn't need much prior knowledge to have fun in it. So I believe that If we have regular activities of some sort that will bring in more people. Some ideas of activities are drawing contests which could be monthly. we could have daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly gaming challenges. These are sadly only a couple of ideas that I have but we can easily expand this list of things to do and if we want to get a big community project done we could have set days for certain things to be collaborated on. I don't know if my little rambling thing made sense at all or even connects to the actual forum part of it but I wanted to put an idea out there. |

Triggers.

It's the eventual decay that all forums go through. People come and go, but the ratio of people coming to those going are not really in favor of an active board. I just check VE nowadays out of habit. I don't even check the Skype chat anymore. |

I only check just for the sake of seeing things are going. Kinda lost interest once I hit 5k posts and Milk intro'ed me to Exta. |

As mentioned before the Skype chat and shoutbox, to a lesser extent, play a big part I think. If those conversations were to take place on the forum it would be much more lively. I'm actually a bit curious, why do they only happen on Skype? Can we do something to facilitate that kind of interaction on the forum, perhaps? Perhaps also a good questions is, what do we want VE to be? Casual social interaction (what Skype is right now)? Forum games? Role play? Insightful discussions? A place to organize external events (like a minecraft building project)? If I look at why I come here at the moment is to check up on topics, sweep bots and read some role play posts from time to time. To be honest I don't really have anything to talk about that I think would fit the forum. Most of my conversations and activities nowadays revolve around technology, mostly ICT related, and I frankly I don't have the idea that anyone here would be interested in my ramblings about that. Did I mention that I spend far too much time writing a post? Thinking of what to write and folding it all into a post takes me such a long time. It's far easier just to read. Maybe we need a like button or something, some way to show interest in a topic and let the poster know we appreciate their contribution without having to comment on it necessarily. |

I'm leaning towards all of the above, but that might be a bit too ambitious. If anything the forum should be a place for both casual and intellectual discussions and to organize the occasional event. Of course we'd have stuff like role plays and forum games on the side, but it wouldn't be the main focus. In other words, how I remember VE being right around when I first joined over two years ago. I also like the idea of a like button on topics/posts, we should totally implement that. Edited by Hatsune Candy, Apr 15 2014, 02:01 AM.

That's just the issue, though; This place has a little bit of all of that as is, and it's clearly not working out as well as you hope. If you ask me, we should just be focusing on one or two things and keeping the rest as a tangent section at best. From what I can see, our main strengths are RP's and Forum Games. I'd like to see some more improvement in the Discussion topics, personally, as I feel the majority of people who would be interested in RPing would also be interested in discussing Anime, Manga, and Video Games. Just my Ten Cents. |

I like to come to this forum from time to time to look at stuff progress. Usually I only tend to post if there's a topic I feel strongly about. Though honestly lately it's only been hype for the new smash bros game and until a few weeks ago a pretty awesome anime. It'd be nice to have newcomers to the forums again, and an occasional event sounds cool. |

As the RP Moderator, this might sound odd coming from me, but... This forum isn't about RPs or games. I didn't come here initially to RP. I came here to get an insight on what Naka was doing because I appreciated his LPs to that extent. Granted, once I got here, I was sucked into various games and RPs and discussions, but this forum is about Naka, and I believe that it should continue to be about Naka. He says that we've given this forum a life of its own, and we have. But at its core, it is about Naka. It more or less feels like a Naka's inner circle (albeit not as "inner" as Ogre and a couple others are, but still). If someone knew comes here, I would assume the biggest reason is not the RPs or games (with some exceptions), but because of Naka. I would like to see that section expand if at all possible, like how we mentioned earlier. I would also like to see the Twitter feed return, as it gave us an insight as to what was going on with Naka (without making him take extra time out of his busy schedule to do random updates). It's great to focus on one or two things, and that will bring back some people who are less active, but that won't bring in newcomers. Newcomers are the foundation of any growth, and without them, the forum will stagnate. As for Skype/shoutbox... One reason I use Skype is because it's instant and there's no real topic. Sure, we could have a chatting topic on VE, but to be honest, it would basically be spam anyways. On Skype, I can talk about anything from my LPs to the state of the RP to what Sos had for supper last night. We can complain about things that bother us, or rejoice in positive things that happened to us. Some of these things may be personal that we don't, for one reason or another, wish to share with all of VE or the world. The Skype groups give a private, instant, and intimate way to share that info. As for the shoutbox, 99% of what I see there is either "my game has updated, please check" or complaints/arguments, neither of which really have any purpose in the threads. |

Well, what's the main reason most people join a forum? Because they all share a common interest and want to discuss it with others. So yeah, I think you're right Jeebs, it'd be a good idea to expand upon the Naka part of the forum, that's what it was originally made for after all. We've kind of strayed away from that and that might be why we lost so much activity. But I also think it's because of the lack topics. People seem to be hesitant to make new ones nowadays, and I don't know if that's because of the forum's inclination to necro old ones or not, but we need to do something about it. New topics should be encourage, everyone has something interesting they want to discuss and I feel like a forum is only active when people are creating their own topics about the stuff they want to talk about, Naka related or not. Take this topic for instance. I wanted to talk about reviving the forum and I knew I wasn't the only one so I made a topic about it. It's not that complicated, but no one wants to do it anymore, and that's just one of the things we need to fix in order to kickstart this place again. Also, Ryoukai's right on one regard, we've got too many sections for such a small forum. That might put off some people just joining for the first time and make it difficult for our current members to stay active. We need to focus on them less, maybe even remove or combine a few if we really want to revive the forum. Edited by Hatsune Candy, Apr 15 2014, 09:00 AM.

A few interesting topics brought up here. The trend to necroing I think may go a bit far. I've got no problem with necro posts as long as they've got something to add and aren't just bumping a year-old topic with "lol", but when the mood of the forum is that before you make any topic you've got to do a search to see if it exists buried somewhere is a bit ridiculous. If it's not right there on the front page staring at them, let it be. We need to encourage new posts. I'm not sure why my Twitter broke, to be honest. I'd done nothing to it, but I've got no idea how to fix it. It may have broken when Twitter updated a while ago. On the note of the number of subforums, they were, of course, made when the forum was much more active and was done out of necessity. Any more there's not enough activity across the board, and I feel they could be compressed. Forum Games I feel needs to stay separate so as not to flood a general area. Gaming and Anime/Manga could maybe be combined into General, though that would leave Speedy without a job. Even Introductions I feel could then be brought in and made a subforum to General, so there aren't as many sections on the front page. |
