Fairly sure I've given up.

Snow, while I sort of agree with subcategorizing.. this forum is CURRENTLY not seeing nearly enough activity to have any reason to do so- all we'd be doing is create more sections where there's no posts. What I'm thinking is if there actually is an overall need to merge the sections. I'm not sure if there's ANY merit to it.. On a completely unrelated and alternate note- I was wondering, mostly with the lowered activity.. if it wouldn't help if rather than keeping Rescla, JB and me in seperate areas, we'd all have our moderation tools available EVERYWHERE. Just in case another spambot pops up or someone needs a quick delete on a post.. Not saying we should 'change jurisdiction' or anything, just wondering if it isn't an idea to spread our roles. More global moderating than specific sections. Might also help with the differing timezones, and we all have our times when we're simply too busy to 'quickly' deal with a situation. People could then go to either of the two other moderators. As for what I mean with 'jurisdiction'.. despite that we'd all be able to edit/delete posts/topics in all sections, obviously JB'd still be heading the Writing section, Rescla still the General and Introduction and I would still handle the Media sections. Nothing changes there, just that someone could be knocking on the other moderators' doors if there's a quick response required. |

I've heard at least two people mention that combining forums would make things a mess and make it difficult to find a topic, and at least in this situation I'm not really sure I understand how. If the forums were more active, than sure, you'd have to dive over a new forum's things and dig down to find that one topic, but these forums aren't active. Like I said, there's a topic on the front page of the anime/manga forum that hasn't been posted in for over a year. Sure, if you wanted to find that one specific topic amongst the more active General, sure, but when it hasn't been posted in for over a year how many people really care that much about that topic any more? The only way I feel this would be terribly important is if there were more data-repository type topics that weren't meant so much for posting, but for reading what was there, but there's none of that in either forum aside from maybe the recommendations topic. And we're certainly not dividing up the forums even more. They're not that active. Dividing them up would just make six sections all with no topics and no activity. |

Yeah, the anime/manga section gets the least amount of activity out of the entire forum. In fact, I think this topic has gotten more posts in the span of just 24 hours than that section has gotten in the past week or so. Which is rather sad. I think it would be better to just combine it with another section than to continue to leave it to gather dust. Actually, on another subject, I just remembered something that Naku might've told me a while ago. And that's that a lot of people come to this forum to interact and discuss topics with not just the community, but also Naka himself. However, and correct me if I'm wrong, I haven't seen Naka get involved in any real topics unless they concern him or the forum, or if a major conflict needs to be resolved. I'm only throwing it out there, I can understand if Naka's too busy or prefers to not include himself in any of VE's casual discussions, but it wouldn't hurt. As for Speedy's suggestion, except for Rescla's sections since he's only on occasionally, I don't really see any pressing need to expand moderation abilities. And even with Rescla's sections, he gets the spam within 24 hours usually, so it isn't that big a deal. Something to keep in mind: Naka (like a lot of us online, myself included) is an introvert and from what I understand, generally doesn't wish to get involved in topics unless he has a personal stake in them. Like this one. As great as it would be to see Naka comment on PRP or have him join the Mafia game or even weigh in on his opinion of Smash Bros, I don't think we should try to force involvement outside his comfort zone. Although Naka, pretty much all of us would be interested in even the most mundane of additions to the discussion, such as "I like Rosalina."

One thing I'd like to note, Jeebs, is that I am also very much an introvert, socializing tires me out real easily. So believe me when I say that I know Naka is not a very social person. If he doesn't want to get involved because it makes him uncomfortable or for any other reason, that's perfectly understandable. It's just my personal opinion that since it's his forum he could maybe consider taking part in a few casual discussions every once in a while. Not necessarily often, but just enough to make it feel like he's a part of his own forum. |

You're a new face, so just by being that, you're helping. Simply post about what you're interested in. Make topics if they don't exist. So long as you are not hateful, we will welcome you with open arms. |

Embodiment of Corruption

I think the problem with Animé/Manga is that discussions are likely to occur only whilst the series in question is running. After its conclusion it tends to die down, assuming it had the interest to be active in the first place. This, to a lesser extent, also applies to games. As for posting on the forums, I'm awfully reserved. Unless I have a passion for it or an urge to voice an opinion (and basically leave right afterwards) I'm not likely to post. I also don't share a lot of common interests with many of the forumers which only serves to further shy me away from posting. If anything I find the lack of activity harder to approach than an abundance of activity, since I'm more comfortable with being drowned out by the surrounding noise than being the loud voice myself. TL;DR I'm not good at dealing with people and receiving attention. |

Hey! New/oldbie here. (and sorry for bumping the topic, I was linked in here) This might just be personal taste, but I actually feel like putting more of the forums on the front page might encourage activity a little? More boards on the front page means more opportunities for the "new posts!" signal, which means more likelihood of clicking through to see what's going on. Again, though, that's just my experience from other boards, which might be completely off-base for this community. |
