Naka the Honeywhite

Could have sworn that was in the "Forum MO" topic, but I suppose not. This forum has no written rules. I expect everybody to treat each other with respect and act like mature adults. That's all the rule there is, and that's how it will stay so long as I'm running the place. I've simply had too much experience with people trying to edge the rules, finding a loophole, or interpreting it in such a way as to allow them something that was not intended. The rules then expand and expand to accommodate every tiny nuance, and at the end of the day people are just intimidated by massive super-precise list of what you can and can not do. A few more minor rules have been established over time, but they're mostly an extension of showing respect. Such as not dumping LPs here to get views, which is disrespectful towards the members here, or using a font so large only a single letter can be seen at a time, which is annoying to see and as such disrespectful towards the members here. Considering there are potentially younger members here as well, I'd suggest keeping discussion PG/PG-13 tops. I expect everybody to act like a mature adult and treat each other with respect. I've got moderators in place, as well as myself, that tend to judge things on a case-by-case basis, but for the most part just don't be a jerk and we're all good. |

I got the "don't be a jerk thing" but the "Don't promote your own shit unnecessarily, especially LPs" is handy to know, thanks. I usually hang around general community forums for a very long time... and I have a strange tendency to appear out of nowhere whenever my name is mentioned. I don't even know how it happens. If you're having trouble reviving the forums I could go throw a couple topics down: I've got a lot of random stuff I'd like to talk about. Edited by HexZyle, Jan 20 2015, 12:00 AM.

Yes, please do, it might entice some of the other members to start posting regularly again. If anything, I'll gladly post in your topics (but only if I'm actually interested in the subject at hand). |

Starting to think we may actually want a spot where these are localized. The two main rules of 'don't advertise LPs' and 'try to be mature' need a bit more of a prominent spot, rather than be muffled into guidelines, infamous quotes or a topics such as this one. Thinking of building a topic where those two get the spotlight, then the rest of the 'rules' from the quote can become community guidelines, since that's more what they are rather than rules.

I think if you read Naka's response again, he has a very good reason why he's done things this way. |

Hence why I'm having trouble deciding if it should be a good idea or not. There's a bunch of grey areas along this route, too, which we can't do. It's why I wanted to make those TWO points extremely clear, but the rest more under 'guidelines'- so people know that we'd like it if they kept an eye on them, but aren't explicitly rules. I guess I'm still not entirely sure if this is a good idea, I guess. Naka has made it obvious why he didn't make a set of rules, but I personally think it might be a bit too open for interpretation. |

That's kinda what I was saying, like, we should at least have a place for general guidelines and whatnot. Not a list of rules, specifically, but just a little thing to let people know that, "Hey, this is what you should be doing and this is what you shouldn't be doing." I can understand Naka's reasoning for not listing out a set of rules, however I still think we need something so that we don't keep getting new members making such simple mistakes as advertising their own Let's Plays.

And I forgot to mention.. I looked up again where the maturity comment came from. These are the first few I could find..http://s4.zetaboards.com/VagrantEpochers/topic/7910865/findpost/8004371 http://s4.zetaboards.com/VagrantEpochers/topic/8286971/findpost/8076750 http://s4.zetaboards.com/VagrantEpochers/topic/8793777/findpost/8120243 http://s4.zetaboards.com/VagrantEpochers/topic/7893110/findpost/8144945 Yes, I did remove parts of the quote, as the original comments were in the context of the topic, rather than a general statement. I figured this part was what outlined Naka's intention. ..and I kinda found out when I found the last quote that I'm apparantly contradicting myself from four years ago, haha. Keep in mind that every single one of the quotes you've brought up are 4-5 years old. Things change, perhaps we could use a list of general guidelines now, if only so that the newer members are less confused. It doesn't even have to be a list, it could just be a sticky up somewhere that goes, "Hey man, this is now things work around here just so ya know." I mean, it all depends on what you think is easier. Explaining it to each new member when they inevitably make a mistake, or just sticking up a topic and being done with it. Personally, I'm leaning more towards the latter, but that's just me. |

To be honest, though, when I looked up information, I also noted that nearly every time we spoke of rules, Naka has basically been 'nope, be mature, that's it, no rules'. And even explicitly mentioned a bunch of times he's not gonna place rules. ...and finally, turns out the forum MO post has been edited about three weeks ago. I hadn't noticed.. at all. To quote: So.. I guess.. end of topic? Since basically it was done and over with.. My only mistake is searching for old things only, I guess, haha.. Still, my bad there. Shouldn't have brought it up.. ![]() Though admittedly I'm starting to agree with 5-years-ago Kuma that Naka should really sticky/pin the Forum MO topic, XD. Edited by Speedy, Feb 7 2015, 03:23 PM.
