Once upon a time, in a world of oddities there was a strange kingdom. This kingdom had many strict rules and many strange ways of doing things that made it a hard place for truly extraordinary people to thrive. The kingdom’s ruler was a harsh queen who was obsessed with perfection and ashamed of her daughter the fair princess. The princess was the most extraordinary person in all the land, but to hear the queen speak of her you’d believe she was a diseased fool who had not a bit of sanity. The princess’ life was all too harsh as her mother kept her locked away in a tower and constantly had the brightest physicians in the kingdom trying to make her “well”. The sadness of the princess was so great that at night she would stare out her window and plead with the stars, begging for a way to escape the kingdom. The stars however, showed no sign of hearing her. Thus the princess feared her wish would never be granted.

However, her pleas for escape were carried on the wind and one night they were heard by a rather kind-hearted dragon. Upon hearing the princess’ wish the dragon decided to help, and so that same night he leapt into the sky and flew straight for the kingdom. He flew for days and days, until finally the kingdom was visible on the horizon. At long last the dragon arrived in the kingdom, shocking the citizens during a festival.

As the dragon landed a hush fell over all the people, and in the quiet of that moment the dragon turned to the queen and bowed before speaking his peace. The dragon’s mighty voice could be heard all over the festival grounds as he told the queen of how he had heard the princess’ wish to be freed from the kingdom and had decided to help her.

The kingdom’s citizens were dumbstruck as this dragon was not at all what they had been taught about dragons. They had been told that dragons were fire breathing, mindless, monsters that could fly. Yet, this dragon was speaking quite coherently with their queen. He had even shown a sign of courtesy by bowing before addressing the queen.

The queen was not as impressed with the dragon as her subjects were. She was convinced the dragon was lying about the princess wishing to escape from the kingdom. The princess however, confirmed that she had wished it, with all his heart. This statement shocked the queen and angered her greatly. Before she could act on her anger, the dragon spoke again and told the queen and her people that he would not destroy the kingdom, though he was quite capable of doing so, as they may have feared. He asked the queen a simple question; “How much faith do you have in your knights?”

The queen’s pride in her knights was evident well before she began speaking of each one’s greatness. So, the dragon offered a very simple solution. He would fight the knights, and if they managed to slay him then the problem would be solved and the knights’ renown would grow even more. On the other hand, if he won he and the princess could leave in peace.

The queen agreed heartily, boasting that just one of her knights could easily fell a dragon. Seemingly unconcerned, the dragon readied himself for the fight as did the knights. When the battle began the kingdom’s people were astonished by the battle prowess of the dragon. The thing that shocked them the most was the blinding speed he had. For something so big it was amazing that he could move so swiftly.

In a marveling display he downed one knight almost immediately. The others recovered from their shock quickly though and attacked
with stunning teamwork. The dragon was clever though and turned many of their attacks against them. Slowly and steadily the dragon downed one knight after another until there was but one left. The combatants stared each other down as they circled each other. Then in a burst of action they charged at each other, both ready to end it with one swift strike. In a flash it was over, the last knight laying on the ground and the dragon standing proudly.

The noble dragon let loose a ball of fire toward the sky in triumph and turned to the queen. She sat stunned, unable to believe that her knights had lost. The dragon turned from the queen to the awed princess and asked if she still wished to leave. In answer she ran from her mother and toward the dragon. He lowered himself to allow her to easily climb onto his back. Once she was seated and secure he leapt into the sky roaring in triumph they flew away.

The people of the kingdom watched the two fly away, and as they did they felt their minds begin to open to new possibilities. It was then they realized that the dragon hadn’t killed any of the knights, as they started to awake from unconsciousness.

Over time the strict policies of the kingdom faded and it became a place abundant with extraordinary people. Did the princess ever return? She might have if life with the dragon hadn’t been so much fun.

The End
