Am I just not getting the appeal of the series or there's something else I'm not getting. All you're really doing is: Point Shoot Move And get shoot. Get the nuke once and a while You're pretty much practicing the art of murder,THEN WHY DOES EVERYONE LIKE THESE TYPE OF GAMES! If I hurt anyone's feelings I'm sorry,I'm just speaking my opinion. Can anyone explain the reason for FPS popularity to me? |

Because you can get away with murder, that's why. Guess what that says about society as a whole? Edited by Don Jentleman, Feb 2 2011, 06:43 PM.

CONGRATULATIONS! You just learned the thought process of most people in America... your prize is: a most likely lower IQ, Have a nice day! But in all seriousness, yes, it essentially comes down to the massive appeal of pointless blood shed and murder with use of guns from the view of the shooter. |

FPS's are very appealing to gamers who are bored of the side scrolling and third person perspective of gaming. Gamers want to play games through their OWN perspective, so then, FPS's were created. I think creators wanted to add a bit more interactivity to the gameplay, and add the feel of "you're right there." And yes, it could get mind-numbing at times ...actually most of the time. Not the biggest fan, but I'll play them occasionally. About the shooting and killing ...you do realize that almost EVERY GAME EVER CREATED PRACTICES THE ACT OF MURDER, RIGHT? Look at Mario, he's stomping and squishing goombas and koopas. Look at Metal Gear, Snake is killing people by surprise. Look at Katamari Damaci, the Prince is rolling innocent creatures up into a ball and exploding them into a star! You don't call those acts murder? Edited by dead account, Feb 2 2011, 06:51 PM.

I can tell you the EXACT reason it became popular. *ahem* Half-Life. Yes, Half-life by VALVe. Not Half-life 2, Half-life. VALVe was the one who made FPS gaming popular. Gabe Newell you magnificent bastard! |

I put the "Manly"... in "Gentlemanly".

^I read his book. But in all seriousness, I do not find myself qualified to speak on this subject. No, it is mainly JRPGs and fighting games for me. I will give FPS games one thing, though- the thought of teaming up with friends against other people in all-out war elicits some manner of primal euphoria that only battle, simulated or otherwise, can provide. Humans enjoy killing and the thrill of the hunt. It is natural. It plays to our lesser instincts. It lords in this way over other genres. Or so I suspect. |
