One Word: Wolfenstien. And maybe Doom. Possibly Goldeneye. Long explanation: Psychologically speaking, it's probably some residue from the mid 80's/early 90's. Fantastically pyrotechnic Action films and angry, angsty protagonists with mommy-issues. Those films, and FPSs, seem to subsist off of the idea that a single man with a gun can go charging/creeping through a huge, evil facility and save the day. Realistic? Nope. Exciting? Hells yeah. I over-generalize. Leave me alone. At this point, if Sega was willing to try their hand at it (Vindictus), it might be burnt out in the industry for a while. Certainly feels like it. Off-hand review of some game I just played a day ago...
