Spiral HQ has made a new discovery within the Clockworks, although some scouts did not return to tell the tale..

And you thought Spookats were terrifying already...

A new section of the Clockworks has been uncovered; the Candlestick Keep. It appears to be the remains of the once prosperous Owlite Academy, and is now haunted by Spookats. It is said that the academy was a wonderful place for Owlite Scholars to advance, but when the Kat tribe raided it all of the Owlites vanished and the academy was left in ruins. The Kat tribe managed to wipe out themselves, using the artifacts within the academy, which resulted in the birth of the Spookats.

Within the academy, Owlite ward candles are scattered around to light the darkness that has befallen the academy. These ward candles will prove to be lifesavers, as new horrifying monsters have manifested in the keep...
Blue ward candles are always lit. These will provide constant protection.
Orange ward candles must be lit with embers, and only burn for a short period of time. Stay alert, as the candle might burn out when you least need it to.
Some orange candles open doors. Listen carefully for a chime when lighting one.

You may be asking yourself, what kind of protection will these ward candles provide? It will protect you from the terrifying beasts that lurk in the dark.
Grimalkins, large, shadowy spookats, roam the keep and will not hesitate to attack passerby Knights. These creatures will only remain in the dark, so stay in the light of the ward candles to avoid their attacks. The grimalkins, with their massive size and dark energy, can not be harmed by any weapons known to the Spiral Order, so stay out of range of their attacks. Shields are also ineffective against these creatures, so if you see one coming for you, don't put up your shield - run for your life.

Danger Rooms have become even more dangerous...

New and deadlier danger rooms have been discovered in the Clockworks. Beware, as these new challenges are not for the faint of heart.

Rose Regalia Redux

The Rose Regalia Promo returns, now with three brand new sets to collect!

Between the 9th of September, 10 AM PDT and the 19th of September, 10 AM PDT, you can purchase an energy package for $9.95 and receive a random piece of the new Rose Regalia. If the last promo's colours didn't suit your tastes, or you simply missed out on it, this offer contains three new colours to go with.

Upon purchase of any energy package from $9.95 and up, you will receive one of the following items in the mail as of your purchase.

Chapeau of the Blue Rose
Chapeau of the Green Rose
Chapeau of the Gold Rose
Tabard of the Blue Rose
Tabard of the Green Rose
Tabard of the Gold Rose

Your piece will be mailed to your currently logged in Knight, or the first Knight on your account when purchased. The items are delivered unbound, so if you get a piece you don't want you can trade it with another Knight. Keep in mind that smaller purchases do not stack up for an item, and bigger purchases will not give you more than one item a purchase.

As with the first three Rose Regalia sets, these will have no special attributes and provide no defence bonuses whatsoever. They can only be equipped in the costume slots. Once equipped, they will be bound to you and can not be unbound again, so if you want to sell your piece, do not equip it!

Music in my ears!

Official Spiral Knights Soundtracks have now become available on iTunes and Amazon and more.
It contains a two disc set featuring thirty one extended, remixed and remastered soundtracks of the game, composed by Harry Mack.

Steam Trading feature

Valve is rolling out a special feature for Steam, and Spiral Knights is one of three games that will be the first to participate in the feature.
However, keep in mind that any items owned on your account, as well as how many Knights you have on your account, will be featured on your steam profile page. You may want to adjust your privacy settings come the launch of this feature

You can read more about it here.

In other news..

The Crash Site has been streamlined and tightened up, so new Knights will have it easier getting to the Rescue Camp.

Crowns and Heat now have a 90 seconds lifespan before vanishing.

Mod Calibrators now cost 75 Krogmo Coins.

Punch has some new prices for his forgery.
- 1 Variant Tickets have been increased from 15,000 to 20,000 crowns.
- 3 Variant Tickets have been decreased from 375,000 to 225,000 crowns.

The confused monsters have regained their senses, and won't appear where they don't belong anymore.

Double-posting madness for a big update!

King Krogmo's Coliseum has expanded!

At long last, King Krogmo has finished the construction of the Lockdown arenas, and thus a new PvP mode was created.

Lockdown acts more like stereotypical PvP as opposed to its big brother, Blast Network. Lockdown is a Capture and Control game, so the objective is to take control over the different Control Points scattered across the map and score more points than the enemy team to ultimately win the match. Your own equipment will be used for this mode, so make sure you've stocked up and are ready to fight off other players.

There is a tier system, so keep an eye on your equipment. A ☆☆☆☆☆ to ★☆☆☆☆ set lets you participate in Tier 1 matches, ★★☆☆☆ to ★★★☆☆ equipment puts you at Tier 2 and ★★★★☆ to ★★★★★ equipment puts you at Tier 3. Now, remember, as long as even one piece equipment goes into the next tier, you will be classified for that one. If you have a full set of 3* gear, and one 4*, you will be classified for Tier 3 instead of Tier 2, so be careful.

Loadout
There is a new feature available, called Loadout. This allows you to create different armour sets for different situations to conveniently switch in between full armour sets with but one simple mouse click. Let's say you're creating a set for Royal Jelly Palace, you put on the equipment you would like to use for just that area, and click Save As, then you name your set. Now keep in mind, there are two different set-types. PvE (Player versus Enemy) and PvP (Player versus Player). When you create a new equipment set, it will be labelled as PvP by default. If this set is simply a costume set you like running around in Haven with, or if it's for use in the Clockworks, click the swords-icon to change it to PvE. PvP-labelled sets will become available for you to change to when playing Lockdown, and having a PvE set amidst your PvP sets could mess you up, so make sure to organize. Having different loadouts for the different classes (explained later) is a big plus, so make sure you are prepared for anything.

How to Play
Here's a quick run-down of how Lockdown games play out.

  • Stand on a capture point until your team takes control of it. There is an influence ring that expands from the center to the outer ring, once the influence has reached the border you have taken control of it, and it will earn your team points for as long as it's under your control.
  • If the control point is neutral (white), all you have to do is take over it.
  • If the control point is owned by the enemy team, you must first remove their influence from the control point and make it neutral. The enemy team will keep earning points from the control point until their influence has been completely removed from the control point. Once it has become neutral, your team can capture it.
  • If both teams are standing on the same control point, none will influence the control point. Only when players from one team is standing on it can you influence the control point.

Class Mods
Class Mods are unique to Lockdown and replace your shield with a special ability. There are three different class mods with their own strengths and weaknesses, and I'll run them through.

Guardian
The Guardian is a powerful class that equips you with a large shield that has equal resistance to all attack-types. When shielding, you get instant protection from any incoming attacks, and after one second you expand your shield over a wide area that protects your team-mates. As the shield will be taking hits for everyone within the border of your protective field, it may result in your shield shattering rather quickly so be careful. While inside of the protective border, both you and your team-mates slowly regenerate health, so the Guardian acts like a mobile health-station. You can not heal while the shield is broken.
The Guardian Mod gives you an increased sword attack speed and bomb charge time reduction, but it decreased your handgun attack speed.

Recon
The Recon equips you with a stealth device that makes you completely invisible to the enemy team. While invisible, you project a pulse within a certain radius. Any enemy player hit by this pulse receives a Recon Mark. Players hit by the pulse are given this is a warning that there is an enemy Recon nearby, and they must either get out of their pulse radius or attempt to hit them and disrupt their cloak. If players with a Recon Mark get hit by your second pulse, they receive a Death Mark, and all of their defences are reduced to zero for five seconds, leaving them vulnerable to all attacks. Be aware that your cloaking device can only keep you hidden for so long, if your device is about to run out of power make sure you get away from the enemies first!
The Recon Mod gives you an increased handgun attack speed and bomb charge time reduction, but decreases your sword attack speed.

Striker
The Striker equips you with a jetpack, that allows you to dash at extreme speeds for a short period of time. This is especially useful for dashing in to deal some damage and then make a swift retreat before the enemy gets a chance to retaliate. Experienced Strikers are extremely deadly, and when in groups can really cause hell, even for the sturdiest of Guardians.
The Striker Mod gives you increased sword attack power, but increases charge time for bombs.

In other news...
  • Heat and crowns now despawn after 120 seconds.
  • The Vendor Preview feature is now working again.
  • Rewards in Danger Rooms have been increased.
  • You can no longer place bombs or pick up power-ups while invincible in Blast Network.

Power Surge Weekend is running, right now, lasting until Sunday, 25th of September 9pm PDT.
Now is a great opportunity to do some spelunking, for only 5 energy per floor.

The Energy system to run things really needs to be removed. It's so annoying, and it's basically the main thing that keeps me from playing this game often. ._.

Actually, I think the Energy system is the only reason people play at all. If energy prices weren't so steep, everybody would already have what they wanted. That raises some interesting points too, though. For example, I would probably quit playing once I got where I wanted aesthetically and only log on at request.

I still have a way to go. Sure, I have collected many 5* items, but I still have many goals set for myself. I don't know what your goals are, but if it's all about beating the Duke in the Firestorm Citadel it's going to be a short-lived game, as it's easily achieved in a month. In fact, you can even reach Tier 3 in about a week if you know what you're doing, so you could probably beat the Duke in about a week and a half. I was talking to someone about this, and they told me this is all there was to the game. I responded, "No wonder you don't play."

The game is still young, and there is more to come, but I doubt the energy system is going away. It is frustrating to deal with, but it must be done. That said, the power surge weekend ends in about 15 hours from now, so make the best out of it.
