More-or-less prepared for the stars...
There aren't enough playable female characters in games.

Discuss.

Don't play with fire, kids.
^ Agreed. And I like fan service, so that's not an issue to me.

While i agree that there aren't really all that many female leads in games, I honostly don't mind. A lot of the time when there is a female in a game, they are usualy there to be some sort of fanservice or to the be the main love intrest. I wouldn't mind there being more female leads in games but at the same time i won't lose sleep over it

Agreed, but I feel that they can't always be placed in games just to act as service. Sure, it never hurts to please the fans, but you lose the whole point of a female lead when you have too much of it. I personally like strong female leads that are truly creative and well thought out leads, and not just badass women with tits.

What can I say? I like me some personality in my women, even if it comes to bite me in the ass.

The best examples of good female characters (not even getting into leads) that I can think of are Samus pre-Other M, June/Akane from 999 (Not going to go into this one too much, because to get deeper involves major spoilers), Celes/Terra/Rydia (Actually unique characters, little fan service). And really, most of the characters from the Tales series, minus Sheena and Judith. That's off the top of my head...

Hello~
Off the top of my head of games and/or series that contains female leads or at least main characters (playable is too vague): Fire Emblem, Bayonetta, Heavenly Sword, Mirror's Edge, Beyond Good and Evil, Guilty Gear, Disgaea, Soul Nomad and the World Eaters, Pokemon (kinda), Persona, Tomb Raider, Most Final Fantasy (Some as leads like XIII, some as main character, like VIII), Most Tales of games, Metroid, The Legend of Zelda series, Mario (At times), Advance Wars, Megaman ZX, Dark Chronicle (Dark Cloud 2), Castlevania Order of Ecclesia, Sonic the Hedgehog (Blaze the Cat is playable, I believe), Resident Evil, Silent Hill 3, Kingdom Hearts (Birth by Sleep and 358/2 days), Breath of Fire, and of course, Touhou.

I'll give Fire Emblem some credit, the female characters tend to be complete bad***es. Seriously, Rebecca, Nephenee, Illyana, Amelia and Marisa were pretty much my MVPs.

So much. This is exactly how I feel on the matter. It's not hard to make a female lead; it really isn't.

Fairly sure I've given up.
+1 for MastaDJ, right there.

Though his point illustrates why people hate Other M's Samus.

Anyway, I would pretty much like to state you guys are making a mountain out of a molehill. Sure, games have more male characters than female, but so is the world. Also, in GENERAL REALISM, males are stronger than females, thus they make more sense as 'burly, hardened badass' than any woman would.

Point in case, there are plenty of female characters which are playable and/or the main character. Stabby illustrated quite the list there, and I suggest you look those games up.

Making a mountain of a mole-hill? I think you're mixing up that concept with some good ol' discussion. :P We're not freaking out or anything, just talking about the idea.

Anyway, when you compare the number of female lead characters to the number of male leads, no, there really aren't that many in comparison. (We are talking about lead characters, afterall. :P) You don't need to be physically strong/hardened badass to be the hero; not at all. Plenty of other ways to go. It just takes a little creativity and not sticking to the norms.

Not quite the lead (though you do get to play as her), but Etna's a good example of what I mean. She's cunning, sneaky and manipulative. (At least, in the first game. One of the many reasons I don't like Disgaea 2 nearly as much; they made her this obvious bitch and it just kind of stuck after that) There's more to it, but if, for some reason someone hasn't finished it, I won't say anything. I wouldn't imagine she's incredibly strong (though she's a demon, so I could be mistaken. :B) and yet she's a very interesting character and would be quite interesting as a lead. At least, I think so. (Yeah, she seems more like a villain, but given Disgaea's nature, it'd make sense there. Plus, even without the nature of Disgaea, I still think that'd be such an interesting character to be the main.)
