As this post makes clear, there are people who don't understand what Touhou is and why it's such a big deal. So, let's use this thread as a place to create an introduction to what Touhou is and what makes it so awesome, so that someone who's never been exposed to it before can understand and appreciate it. |

What do you want written down? I could direct people to the Wiki (http://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Touhou_Wiki), I could give stories, theories, examples of music, examples of arranges and remixes, and a million things more. For example, here is a single amazing theme from Touhou (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bdmDGphX9vE). There's a massive amount of doujinshi, much of which is translated and released by Gensokyo.org one Sunday every month. At Comiket, well over a thousand doujin circles are devoted entirely or almost entirely to Touhou at this point, and that's not counting how many circles may dabble in it here and there (I think. It's been awhile since I read the report on how many circles do Touhou at COmiket, and I know it was over 1000). More than that, it's something that is open to all; if you want to listen to the music, great; if you want to play the game, great; if you want to read the doujinshi, great; make your own stuff? Go right ahead. Touhou is a million little things that come together to make a great whole, and one can get into Touhou from any number of angles. This is a really basic version. Aybody wants a more specialized response about something, request it (and hopefully I'll remember to come into this thread), and I'll respond. Edited by Mstr-Swrd, Jun 14 2011, 03:59 PM.

Ghosty, that's like saying we have no need for introduction threads because everybody who browses these forums already know each other. I have to ask, "What about the newbies?" Touhou started out as just some doujinshi (or indie, to put it in Western terms) games made by ZUN. From what I've heard, ZUN just wanted to compose the music, but ended up programming the entirety of the games anyways. Initially, it was not a series of Danmaku, or Bullet Hell shooters, but all of the main series produced for PC are such shoot-em-ups. The music has grown into a huge... well, I want to say industry, but it is still all doujinshi, fanmade. Naturally, music was eventually accompanied by videos, PVs, and then the Touhou fad branched out into animation as well. There is even supposedly a fanmade anime in production currently. Along with anime, it also branched out into manga and gaming. Along with a few official books and manga, there are a number of doujinshi manga (yes, much of it 18+ as well). In fact, the mangaka, the artist, behind Advent Cirno is the same as that of Yumekui Merry, which you might have noticed in the recent 2011 anime listing. In addition, a number of derivative games have been produced, including Danmakufu, a program which allows you to produce your own bullet patterns. A number of these have been translated by the Western audience. It has even been suggested that the game Deathsmiles, another bullet hell shooter was heavily influenced by Touhou. (Personally I thought it was way easier. :V) Touhou has held an especially heavy influence on net culture, and there are often traces of it found in even major anime/manga productions. Feel free to correct me on any of these points, or ask for examples. edit: TVTropes' description of Touhou: Spoiler: click to toggle

Really, Ghosty. I think you should be a little more open minded. Even though Naka has an annoying fanbase that believes Touhou revolves around his channel, some newer subscribers may have no idea of what Touhou actually is. If they wish to learn about it then we should allow them to, instead of shooing them off and say; "If you don't already know about it then sucks for you." Really, I think this is a decent idea. Go for it. |
