So I got bored, and decided to write this up. What purpose it serves is undetermined, but your thoughts/critiques would be greatly appreciated.
I do intend to update this every other week or so, and I intend to hold myself to that.
Enjoy! ^ _ ^
Prologue
It is 8:30 in the morning. Today is Friday, and a man named Cain has just woken up. He's tall, thin and has long, dirty blonde hair, all matted in a big mess. He has a burning red scar running through his eyes
His current wardrobe is a pair of black boxer shorts, and a black, unbuttoned dress shirt. Cain stumbles out of his queen sized bed, nearly hitting his head on his nightstand. He shambles over to his bathroom, and slams the door shut.
"Augh, my head," he mumbles to himself, his voice carrying a cold, northern accent. "Dammit, I need to lay off the gin," he hatefully mutters as he walks over to his shower, all the while undressing. On his back are many scars, some seem from a knife, while others are almost whip like in nature. There are two prevalent marks though, each run an equal distance along his shoulder blades, as though there used to be something there once.
Nearly twenty-seven minutes later, he's out of the bathroom. Cain now wears a long, Gothic-styled overcoat. He also wears a pair of slacked black jeans, two revolvers hanging from each side. There could be no doubt that this man is a mercenary. He stops to admire himself, before strolling downstairs.
Upon reaching the bottom of the stairs, his phone begins ringing. After painstakingly searching every pocket he has, he finally finds it.
"My shift isn't until noon," he says before attempting to close his phone.
"Cain, wait," the man on the phone says, "there's been a raid on a city near your area."
Cain sighs, "Dammit, I never get a break, do I?" He slams his phone shut, and runs out the door.
The words, "Mother of God." Are the first that Cain mumbles to himself, as he arrives at the city. Once glorious buildings are aflame; men, women and children run from the horrors of what can only be described as all the things Hell itself wouldn't take. There is no hope for the city.
Screams travel throughout the ruins, followed by the earth shattering noises of gunshots. He stumbles back, before muttering, "How could this happen."
A young girl with pink hair runs up to Cain, tugging on his pant leg. She says quietly and urgently, "M-my friend needs help; please!"
Hesitantly, Cain asks, "Where is he?"
"Follow me!" The girl yells before running away.
Cain follows along the twisted streets, fire blazing across the buildings. Almost losing track of the girl, he runs, bullets grazing his hair. Men die around him, trying to protect their families. All the horrors of death and destruction brought to this place. There’s no regret, no reason, all that remains is the schizophrenic madness that is war.
Cain loses sight of the girl. As he stops, the undead surround him. He’s surrounded by draugr, rotten corpses, brought back from death, using strange machines and magick. Their only purpose now is to serve the damned and kill Cain. They stare into him, howling for blood. It takes only a moment until the undead are bearing down on him.
Cain is left with no other choice than to fight. To save the girl, save her friend. He unlatches his revolvers and takes aim; bang.
He begins rapidly firing bullets. One corpse is unlucky enough to run right into the barrel, Cain flinches as the blood from the demon’s skull splashes onto him. He can’t stop though; he has to keep them at bay. All he can do is keep unloading ammo.
Some of the damned are too fast for him though. Ghouls, mummified devils brought back to eat the flesh of the living and dead alike, are simply grazed by the bullets. They sprint around him, circling around him, like birds waiting for the kill. Eventually they attack.
One of them knocks Cain into a pile of burning timbre. Cain yells out in pain, kicking the beast back. His hand whips around, firing a bullet into the heart of the monster. Another ghoul jumps at him, clawing at his chest. Lashing out in pain, Cain stabs his gun into the eye of the beast and pulls the trigger.
After finishing the heartless demons, he latches his revolvers back to his hip. He motions to his hip to drink from his flask. Before he can reach the hip flask to his lips though, he drops the smudged container to the ground. Across the sea of flames, he sees a monster.
The mere image of this abomination of magic and science is disturbing. It stares across at him, its crooked jaw ajar. A monster brought back from hell itself, its body is scarred, much like Cain’s. It differentiates though, its body being warped and lurid, its legs and arms grotesquely disproportionate. The arms and legs are stitched together, nothing quite fitting correctly. The right arm of the demon splits into a sewn line, leading into two forearms, which are almost dysfunctional in use due to their facing in opposite directions.
Another arm, smaller than the others, protruding out of the monster’s left shoulder grabs for a cleaver from the burning ashes of a building. It charges at Cain, screaming its unnatural war cry.
Cain sighs, “Could’ve used that drink,” he coughs, the smoke taking a toll on his lungs, “dammit.”
The demon thrashes about as it makes a b-line to his position, smashing burning timber and throwing rubble out of its way. It pins Cain down. Its scorched eyes glare through his very essence.
Cain quickly reaches into a pile of flaming coals, and grabs the fire. He feels the life of the fire pulse in his palm, a feeling of old times past. He quickly drops out of his nostalgia, throwing the flame into the eyes of the demon, temporarily blinding it.
It screams and flails around. The monster slashes and claws at the air, all the while balling its charred eyes out. The monstrosity swings around, unable to see, and charges into the depths of the city, revenge on its mind.
Cain stares into the distance of the street, hoping to any god that’s out there, that that thing doesn’t come back. He runs down the alleys, looking for the girl and her friend. He wishes he can at least save them; he doesn’t want everyone to die this night.
Not like last time.
