So yes, a thread about Starbound, the next step right after Terraria. So it's basically Terraria in SPAAAAAAAAAACE!!

OH GEEZ PUT AWAY THE FLAMETHROWERS!!

*Ahem* Anyway, there's plenty (or maybe not) to discuss about this game as information becomes available. As of now, the Preorders' 500k milestone for funding's been reached, so a seventh race (The Novakids) is going to be made into the game. Now we just have to deal with the 750k checkpoint, the fossils. :D

I'm really hyped for this game, got a pre-order myself (well actually a buddeh gifted one for me) and I'm looking so forward to the Beta! Still, I feel that this OP doesn't really explain what Starbound is...

On a very basic level, yes, Starbound is Terraria in space. But Starbound brings in several new concepts as well, and for that matter, HOW is it comparable to Terraria?

Starbound is a 2D pixel-art style sandbox game, where you generate a world of small blocks and go explore it and craft stuff from it, go mining underground, fight off monsters, make buildings from blocks and decorations, and eventually delve into dungeons. Starbound, however, has more of a story than Terraria- not only is there a certain degree of backstory behind the six (now seven~) types of playable characters, but there are NPC villages that will generate, some of them able to give you objectives in the form of quests if you desire. With that said, it's still possible to ignore the story entirely without it even getting in your way, but if you like that (and I'm intrigued by the lore posted on the site thus far), then that's something else to entertain you within the game.

World generation is also much more broad than Terraria. Each world is different, not just in landscape, but each world will look different in sky and background, have different resources available, have different inhabitants (yes, most monsters are generated uniquely as well) and even have different physical conditions such as gravity and time cycles. But it doesn't matter if you generate onto a world you don't like, or even if you get tired of exploring the one you started on, because your spaceship allows you to explore an entire universe of worlds, each with several planetary systems of several planets each. Oh yeah, and each planet has a number of moons as well, and probably some other stuff like space stations. Have fun trying to explore everything.

Ming mentioned something about races. Unlike Terraria, Starbound has SIX (well I just woke up to see it is now SEVEN) playable races- Humans, Avians (Religious, Mayan-Aztec bird people), Apex (Super-intelligent monkeys), Floran (Aggresive, tribal plants), Hylotl (Eastern fish people- name may change, no background yet), and Glitch (Middle-age cultured robots). And thanks to the stretch goal set by their preorder-based fundraiser, we now have Novakids (COWBOY STAR PEOPLE). These races have a theme going on, in that all of them are based on some form of known civilization; this is addressed and explained in most of their backgrounds (Novakids only have enough of an attention span to stick to cowboy-age technology, Floran are rather young as a species, Glitch were part of an experiment and are stuck in believing they are in the middle ages...), which I think makes them more interesting. As far as gameplay goes, each race plays exactly the same, not one is statistically different in any way. Each race DOES have the ability to craft their own unique armor, which grants certain bonuses with it, but any race will eventually be able to craft any other race's armor. A demo of a character creator for the first six races is available on Chucklefish's forums, if you sign up to them.

Oh yeah, and you can run on top of single block-high ledges instead of having to jump over them.

... and those, I think, are the most notable features of Starbound. I used this forum post to check some of the above information- it explains a LOT more about the game, so I would suggest looking there as well. The game will have multiplayer, supposedly easier to use than Terraria's. The game is accepting preorders on their sight right now, with various options for payment and extras for each; it's basically organized like a Kickstarter that isn't on Kickstarter's main site. Their next stretch goal set is for adding a new type of item to the game, fossils, which may serve a variety of purposes.

I know this game has been talked about quite a bit on Skype, but on my current hype, I urge the rest of you guys to support this game, spreading news about it and throwing your money at it so they can do more with its development before it's released! :U

Yep. Very much looking forward to this one. Might end up pre-ordering it later down the road, but I won't be able to get the Solarium Tier sadly. It'd be pretty awesome to have your own weapon in the game, though!

No, the Impervium Tier order is just silly.

So is the Starbound-avatar the new in or something?

Thank you Cedi ^.^;

And Shane, I'm not really sure if it is. Ask Cedi.

Though I do know a certain someone might be playing as a certain race.... >.>

Fairly sure I've given up.
You know, despite all the comments on how 'this is Terraria IN SPAAAACE' and such..

I wonder how many of you know that the graphics designer for Terraria is actually the guy BEHIND Chucklefish.

> IT LOOKS LIKE TERRARIA BECAUSE ITS THE SAME GRAPHICS DESIGNER.

Sorry Speedy. ._.;;

I should also say sorry for assuming you want to play as a Florian, but really it was a commission of your character with a green tint on it. >.>;;

Though I should say if Plant!Speedy really was the case, you'd look a lot better as a Guild Wars 2 Sylvari.

I've been looking forward to this for a while. The moment I saw the pre-order thing up I got the cheap bundle. I would have bought more, but I didn't want any of the rewards I'd be willing to afford.

Yes, I'm hyped about this game! I got a pre-order for myself and Cedi! I'll look forward to travelling the stars, exploring new planets and not needing to jump over something one block high!

You guys might find this recent FAQ interesting.

And, I'm just going to put this fanon right here, all projectile shooting guns are actually railguns and coilguns. Why? Because they're futuristic that's why!

For a while now, Starbound's homepage is being updated daily.

Also, this video makes me think that the ship noises could be the new THX theme.
