Don't play with fire, kids.

Hey guys! I would really like to see this section get used more often. To encourage that, I'm starting up a monthly Writing Prompt "contest" of sorts! I put contest in quotes because there really isn't a prize or even much of a judging. What I plan to do is pick one piece of writing that shows improvement as the "winner." This doesn't mean the others weren't great; it just means I'm picking one. I'll try to spread it around to be fair to everyone. The winner gets to choose the next writing prompt and gets their story showcased here in the OP! Here are the rules and criteria: The point of this is to help people write more, to write better, and to expand the areas about which they are comfortable with writing. It's also to bring more people into the Creative Writing section. Don't feel like your writing isn't "good enough." I really want to see everyone's writing. This isn't about beating others. It's about bettering yourself. If you are concerned with me being biased, please PM me before airing it in public. I will listen to your concerns and act accordingly. I might even allow some guest judges from time to time (Note: if you want to be a permanent judge, let me know; we could set up a panel of sorts). Let me know if you're interested below! Writing Prompt List: "Discovery" - submitted by DJ - Winner: Cedi "Faith" - submitted by Cedi - Winner: Candy CURRENT WRITING PROMPT: "Decadence" - submitted by Candy - due December 1st Edited by JBRam, Nov 2 2013, 08:40 PM.

May as well plug this, but this concept bares striking similarity to Reddit's Writing Prompts Subreddit (Cause y'know; same thing). If you're looking for more Writing Prompts to do; go here: http://www.reddit.com/r/WritingPrompts/ |

Fairly sure I've given up.

If you recall, I had a writing contest a while back, too. A good while.. Makes me wonder if I should ask the authors to post them in here. With how inactive.. or rather, dead.. NeoRPZ is, it wouldn't be all that weird to move all the fiction here. Maybe they actually continued the stories since then, would make for some additional content.. As for writing myself, I'm not exactly.. the kind of guy who writes well by prompt, so I fear I might not join this. |

I, on the other hand, am excellent at writing by prompt. This sounds like fun, I'm totally in on this~ Edited by Hatsune Candy, Sep 5 2013, 09:05 AM.

I'm also going to attempt to write something, although I likely won't ever "win."

Sounds like a great idea to get my writing muscles flexed again. Very interested, I'll try to come up with a short story in my free time. :U |

Nice job, Cedi! I love the depth you've created in the story, with the various cultures, eras, and geography evident. You did a lot with visual description, and the voices used seemed to match well with the medium of story-telling. I've got a couple minor comments: you have some mixups between lay/lie verbs (what lay beyond vs what lied beyond), as well as some other very minor grammar/spelling issues. I think the style you used at the beginning should have carried through to the end: meaning, only voices talking and no description of who the voices were outside dialogue. The sudden change in style feels a bit abrupt, and I feel you should either have used descriptors of the speakers all the way through, or kept it purely dialogue until the end. It's a slight challenge, but all of the description you put in the story outside dialogue could be shown with normal dialogue instead. The last comment I have is that the years in the BD era was enumerated backwards. I'm assuming it means "Before Discovery" in the same way BC means "Before Christ." Once you look at it this way, it makes a lot more sense, but it was confusing at the beginning. I might have tried to make it clearer by saying what BD meant the first time I used it. Again, it's slightly challenging to do so in pure dialogue, but you could have one of the kids say "What's BD?" and make it work. A more subtle approach would also likely work. The reason it felt odd was because most fantasy eras are enumerated forwards and split into several eras instead of two like in our real world. All in all, an excellent piece of work! My comments are very minor when you look over the full piece. I doubt my story will be as in-depth as this one was~ |
