There were two worlds, and a star, Near to one, and Far from the other. Billions of lives, spread between the two, but you will choose one to become, one to have its story written, here. First, though, the possibilities need to be narrowed. How about starting with choosing a world?

Near is a watery world, covered in a single, world-spanning ocean, filled to the brim with a mind-boggling variety of life. Of special import are the living islands, the origin of the star species of all, or perhaps only most, of these stories, the handed, a people, while different innumerable ways from us, are still a suitable stand in. In the modern day, a tribal folk, who call themselves the tradition of life, live on these islands, keeping a centuries old tradition, created in the dystopic remains of once great, but also decadent civilization, constantly fighting temptations from every possible angle to fall once again to decadence. Unbeknownst to them until recently, others had survived, scattered to the other world, where, in time, a second catastrophe would bring a few home. These Returned, in their flying fortress-cities, lived on more than uneasy terms with their cousins for only just less than a lifetime, but have settled into something of a peace, albeit one they dominate. For now, there is free trade, free speech, and free hate among the people Near, and change lies around every corner.

Far is world utterly parched. In its truly primeval history, is was barren sphere of metal, inhabited by its strange, otherworldly first inhabitants. That era came and went before long before history, though. Time immeasurable passes, when a space-sundering disaster strikes, water and life pouring through holes in reality, taking new life Far from Near, perhaps most importantly, a few handed, in dazed by the unexpected results of hubristic society. Of course, in their industriousness, they only grew once more, islands becoming mountains, and metal crumbling to sand, turning the uninhabitable world in the harsh, but vibrant Far of modern days. Though they would experience another catastrophe, they would be prepared, in as much as they could be, and there was far less destruction. Those still made homeless by the second sundering settled the mountains, in time carving out the inside into vast cities, rivaling, or even surpassing their predecessors. Yet more wandered the wastes, and in time, they picked up the colors of the sand into their feet, and they fractured into three tribes of color, the Green, Gold, and the Red, each a divided as much along physical lines as philosophical ones. Of course, there were survivors whose home survived as well, in the sky, and their society continued to grow, determined to circumvent all limitations on themselves, increasing in power and alacrity since that second devastation. Indeed, as we speak, an immense craft, the Void-Spanner, traces its perilous course the void between the worlds, the first physical contact between the world under strictly controlled circumstances.

So, knowing this, where do you wish begin this journey, and when? Or would you like to know more?

I think Far is a good place to start for now.

If you didn't want that tavern burnt you shouldn't of put it in the same continent as your players
Sphere of metal sounds brutal, so Far is my answer for where.

Well, it looks like this story will be, or at least begin, on Far! That's hardly specific though, there are still so many times we could begin, and yet more choices beyond that. Perhaps we shall tell a story in modern times, with political upheaval everywhere, clashes between The Practice, heretics, artisans, and those unaffiliated everywhere, a conqueror and unifier emerging from the color-tribes, and the Circle of Peers, leaders among the highest of the flying fortress, disbanded after a breath period of perfect unity. Maybe a decade ago, when the first and thus far only Meeting of All States, occurred, a debacle with emissaries from every city, and every tribe, as well as the year when the Void-Spanner was launched from its dock in the sky, which would in time become its own, special hellscape. Or antiquity, a lifetime beyond living memory, the time of the second Sundering, either a story secluded in the first sky fortresses, forging a new, greater society, or one of those not so fortunate, earthbound and searching for a new home. Ancient history and mythical times are another options, living a story of one of those flung far through space in the first Sundering, confused, and finding yourself in an strange, inorganic world. Another could be true prehistory, the time beyond remembrance, of the Many-Bodied, the alien beings native to the alien world of old Far.

The choice, as is ever the case, yours.

A modern day story...where magic is common knowledge and frequently mixed with technology

That qualification is perhaps unnecessary, as many things you and I might consider magical are simply a part of this world, a force tamed, to some degree, as all technologies are.

A new society forged by the Two-Colors? Or perhaps a story of the green footed tribe attempting to rise in power? A modern sounds good as well.

And we're set for a modern story, as well! Quite fortunate, since that's what I've got the most flexibility with. Now, we can get into more options!

On Far, at this point in history, conflict is everywhere. In the flying fortresses, the Peers underwent a period of unprecedented unity of purpose and direction. After seeing the launch of the Void-Spanner, and now it's exit of the visible zone of the Sky, the Peers have disbanded, and disappeared entirely, leaving the fortresses as petty principalities. One has even crashed to surface, the first do so in millenia, and the home of a mad doctor, willing to sacrifice their own humanity, and that of their subjects, for research into the effects of the void on one's body. In the mountains, the Practice and its followers have been shaken by this disturbance in the objects of their veneration, weakening grasp on the populations of many a city, leading in turn to artisans taking the opportunity to rise in defiance, and of course Heretics to try and profit the coming holy war. Even in the deserts, a conqueror is rising, some calling him the Three-Colored, collecting an ever growing band of misfits, now even including the Red Princess in exile, and as begun to strike out against those who cross paths with him in the Gold.

So, out of this mess, where would you like this story to start, and perhaps to go? Of course, there's no need to strictly choose "the cities" or "the desert", feel free to think of in-between places, of in-between people. If it's popular, I'm certain I can make it work.
