Spheres are an important part of your character as they help dictate what Crests and skills your character innately possess, you always start at the bottom of the sphere tree and progress upwards, but during the upward progression you are allowed to follow any path available to you. Upon reaching the end of a tree you can "reset" back to the bottom to follow another path, thus gaining more abilities. You can also reset during progression if you decide you don't like the path you're currently following (although you should have a valid in character reason for this, at the GM's discretion) however this will cost some of your Sphere points (usually around 500).

Sphere points are gained through levelling up and you start with a set number decided upon by the GM (the standard being 1000). You spend these to progress up the tree.

Here is an example tree (the example is a section of the COMBAT tree)

------------------------------------------------

1 (Free). +5 Attack & Guard Crests, +3 Special Crests (Second - +1 Attack & Guard)

2 (75). +3 Attack & Guard Crests (Second +1 Attack/Guard)

3 (50). +1 Special Crests, +1 Counter Crest, +1 Parry Crest (Second +1 Special/Counter/Parry)

3A (100). +5 Counter Crests, +1 Special (Second +1 Counter)
4A (75). +1 Conversion skill, +1 Counter Crest (Second +1 Conversion skill)
5A...... (continues)

3B (100). +5 Parry Crests, + 1 Special Crest (Second +1 Parry)
4B (50). +1 Guard Crest, + 1 Parry Crest (Second +1 Parry/Guard)
5B (75). + Skill [Strength Conversion] (Second +1 Special)
6B..... (continues)

4 (100). + Skill [Final Blow] (Second +1 Attack & Guard)

5.... (continues)

------------------------------------------------

The Sphere tree may seem complicated at first, but it is actually quite simple. The number (1. 2. 3.) shows what step of the tree you're at, you start at 1 and work your way up. Where you see a letter (3A, 3B) that indicates a branch, you can choose to either follow the "A" branch, the "B" branch or continue along the numbers, if you choose the A branch then you must continue along the A branch until it's end (or you spend the Sphere points to jump back). The (Second) part indicates what you get when you jump to that point the second and subsequent times. The number in brackets after the step number (1 (Free).) indicates the sphere point cost for that step, when you pay that cost you an advance to that step.

And that's all there is to the Sphere system!
