Ampelos crept along the grass carefully, refusing to take his eyes off the large buck grazing ten feet away. When he felt he was close enough to make the kill, he slowly raised his whip, stuck his tongue in his cheek... With a loud, terrified bleat, a sheep burst out of the bushes and successfully terrified the buck, who took off running in the other direction. Ampelos shot to his feet. "Damn it!" he swore, threw his weapon down, then turned to the large, puffy sheep. "Badroulbadour, you slug! What was it this time!? What spooked you, a rabbit or a lizard!?" Ampelos's sheep bleated obliviously back at him, then flopped in the grass and began to rub her head against it. She was probably itchy, and also probably forgot what a hard time she usually had getting back up again. With a deep, exaggerated sigh, Ampelos sat next to his sheep and waited for her to begin panicking so that he could help her back up. "You know, Badou, if you weren't so sweet I would have eaten you by now." Badroulbadour didn't acknowledge this; instead, she bleated urgently and started to thrash around in the grass. Ampelos took that as his cue and, grunting, helped stand her up. |

"Amelius above!" the priestess swore as a blur of panicked animal leaped over and past her. The buck kicked the small wicker plate of sun-drying herbs over onto the book she'd been gazing at reverentially, and she swore again over the receding hoofbeats and tried to--carefully, carefully--shake the leaves and dirt out of its pages. The foul words tumbled into a laugh, though, and she shook her head. "Light grant you mercy, Sister Muirgen, scared of a frightened deer. Really." She rose, still brushing medicinal grass from her precious book, and looked around to see what had startled the creature. Her heart was still beating fast, and she remembered that she was a solitary, unarmed traveler, and far from human civilization. The centaurs were reasonable, but it didn't behoove a young priestess to lose herself in study so deeply that she forgot the world around her. Some distance away, she could make out another figure and a smaller shape. A shepherd, perhaps. They were far enough away that she could be excused for not having heard or noticed them, and they didn't seem to have seen her yet. Relieved, her smile returned. She brought the book to her face and blew down that damned difficult crack between the open pages, shook it one last time, and then closed it and tucked it under her arm. She stooped to gather what herbs she could still find and tossed them and the wicker drying plate into her satchel, picked up her staff, and made her way towards the shepherd. "Ho, there!" she called, when she guessed she could be heard. The shepherd was a young man, she saw, who was helping right his sheep. She grinned at the sight, and, still grinning, raised both her eyebrows when she saw the whip coiled on the ground. She stopped and leaned on her staff. "I see a-a-a-l-l sorts come 'round here!" she said as suggestively as she could, so far away. "I hope I wasn't interrupting anything, Master Shepherd, as I see you've a special care for your sheep! I'll leave you be if you wish!" Edited by Asher, Sep 1 2011, 08:22 AM.

Kutaka was busy searching the plains for some herbs. She enjoyed visiting the plains whenever she got the chance, even if centaurs rarely stopped to talk. Restocking on herbs for her lovely recipes was always a fun activity to do. A harsh cry from above drew her attention, circling above was a bird. What type it was she could not make out. It was probably a centaur sentry’s bird sent out to make sure the plains were untroubled. Kutaka turned back to look at the rest of the plains before her, unsure which direction she wanted to take next. She shrugged and spun herself around until she could not stand still; haphazardly walking whichever direction she swayed. Eventually the world would stop spinning and she would be able to focus again. The young troll had no idea she would walk into strangers about five yards away. |

Ampelos looked up and squinted towards the voice addressing him. Slowly, his brain processed the woman's words. "Huh?" He brushed the grass from his pants, took a few steps forward, then finally put together what the figure was implying. "Oh, what? No!" Ampelos laughed. "No ma'am, if I need to take care of myself I could always dig a hole in the ground." He smiled cheekily and took a few more steps towards the woman, this time taking more note of her appearance. His heart dropped into his stomach when she realized she must have been a priestess: the clothes, the staff, the undoubtedly holy book...everything added up. Flustered, Ampelos hastily tried to think up an excuse for his lewd commentary while Badroulbadour began to work herself up into a frenzy again. She bleated into the bushes, clearly frightened, as her shepherd ignored her in favor of his own moral issues. "I'm -- sorry for what I said just now, ma'am, I wasn't really...you know, I didn't think you'd -- well, that's not what I mean..." Ampelos felt his nose and ears burn in embarrassment. What a thing to say to a priestess, he repeatedly griped to himself. |

Ma'am. Muirgen put on her best stern face as the boy babbled, evoking the tight, grey lips of one of her elders at the Sisterhood. The frown quivered before it could find its bearings on her face, and a snort escaped as she fought to keep her mouth straight. The sheep was bleating like a mad fishwife. The lad was blushing. He was calling her ma'am. She couldn't hold it in. She broke into a loud, shoulder-shaking laugh that bent her forward with its strength. "Master Shepherd," she said helplessly, when she could breathe again. She wiped a tear from her eyelashes. "Lad, I'm not going to be offended by 'sowing your seed.' In fact, ha, ahaha! That's very literal-minded of you! I like it. You take the books at their word." Her eyes twinkled. "I lived in a convent, Master Shepherd. You'd need to spend twenty years in the foulest brothel in Duran to learn language that would shock me. Ha ha ha, hoo." She transferred her staff to the hand that held the book and strode up to him, extending her open hand. "I'm Muirgen O'Broíthe. Just call me Sister Muirgen, no 'ma'am.' Unless you think I'm old enough to call you 'my son.'" Hers was a wicked grin. "Though, if that's something you like," she said, drawing out the last word to make of it a lewd suggestion-- And was interrupted by the sudden lumbering arrival of a troll. "Oh!" A flash of surprise momentarily wiped out her smile. She took a step back, hand over her heart, then chuckled at herself again. "Greetings, traveler, and may Amelius's blessings shine on you. A friend of yours?" she asked the young man, tilting her head so that her curls bounced once around her face. |

Ampelos shook his head and furrowed his brow. "No, sister, I actually was under the impression she was yours." A little half-grin cracked across his face. "But at least now we know why Badou was screaming, don't we? Don't we?" He reached down to scratch Badroulbadour's head and, the second his hand made contact with her, Ampelos's voice took a sharp turn for the babyish. "How 'bout that? Nothing to worry about. Look who's upset! Look who's upset!" he cooed. Presently Ampelos remembered his company and stood back up, completely straight-faced. If he pretended the baby-talk didn't happen, it would be that much easier for the others to forget about it -- or so he was convinced. "Anyway, I'm Ampelos," he continued, addressing both of the women. Much as he tried to play cool, his speech was clumsy from his rampant over-thinking. He looked to the troll expectantly. "And -- you are? ...Miss?" The "miss" was more than a little tacked-on. |

"Woah, woah! Hold on mon and womon! Let me get mah bearin' first ja? Ja yappin' be gettin' ta me!", pleaded Kutaka, standing still with eyes squeezed tightly shut. The young female troll held her hands to her head, trying to ease the dizziness from spinning and stumbling about in half circles to full circles. A moment passed by before she lifted her head up, readjusting her focus. She blinked once at the strangers, and then gave a hearty smile to both of them. Her face, amazingly, was not hurtful for the eyes. Most female trolls were good looking, but she was at least a little above average. Actually, female trolls were the only trolls that were easy on the eyes; the males were rarely ever decent to look at. Still, Kutaka was a little above average. "Ey mons! I be Kutaka! What ja be doin' in dese centahr lands?", greeted Kutaka. |

"Gathering herbs and roots for medicines, before I met young Master Ampelos here. I'm a healer," Muirgen said, peering up at the newcomer. Kutaka's expression seemed cheery enough, but Muirgen didn't know enough about trolls to know if her color was good, and she'd seemed disoriented and dizzy. Forgetting Ampelos and his baby-talk for a moment, Muirgen gave the troll a gentle nurse's smile. "Are you all right, Kutaka, dear?" she asked, taking one step forward and extending one nonthreatening hand palm-up. |

"I be fine. I was spinnin' myself around ta choose a direction ta go. I be a little indecisive 'ere and dere.", assured Kutaka. "Ah, 'erb gaduhring too? Ya, I be 'ere pickin' for da cookin'! Ya two should come along! I be stewin' someting up for da soul and belly!" Kutaka was more than happy to share stories and meals with strangers and by the looks of it, these ones were safe. |

Ampelos's eyes lit up at the offer of a meal. "You mean it? That would be great!" He glanced sideways at his sheep. "Especially since someone chased off my supper." |

Muirgen considered for a moment, a thread of adult caution instating itself as she realized she was probably the oldest person there--but then, exposed to the sunlight, the enthusiasm of her companions, and the presence of the sheep, it eroded away again into her irrepressible smile. The situation was too silly to be dangerous. "I've never had troll cooking before! Is it very different from human cooking, do you think?" she asked, fumbling her staff and book into more comfortable positions. She grinned and straightened, which thrust her belly out a little. "I love food. As you might be able to tell." |

"Of course! Ja be crazy if ya tinkin' trolls kid bout da stewin'!", joked Kutaka to Ampelos. "And ya neva be wantin' 'uman food again!" She motioned for the two to follow her to one of the groves she knew of around the Plains. It was the few places that any trees to form some sort of natural enclosure or shelter. All the while she would be keeping an eye out for any herbs on the way there. |

Ampelos, still beaming, followed the troll girl through the Plains. Unfortunately, he had to stop every now and then in order to coax his sheep into keeping pace with him: Badroulbadour looked even more nervous than usual. The third time she stopped, Ampelos was clearly beginning to get frustrated. "Badou, please pick up your feet," he groaned through clenched teeth. The sheep refused. |
