Daniel Pierce-Jones Daniel Arthur Montgomery Pierce-Jones (born January 3, 1973) is the current Member of Parliament for Chichester, sitting as a member of the Conservative Party. Pierce-Smith studied Modern History at Oxford University, gaining a first-class honours degree and then a Master's before deciding to study law at Harvard University. He then joined the Euro-sceptic think-tank, the European Research Group where he became closely associated with then-director, Daniel Hannan (with whom he'd studied history at Oxford). He first stood for political office in 2004 when he became a Conservative MEP from South-West England alongside his former-boss-turned-co-worker, Daniel Hannan. The two pursued a Euro-sceptic platform. In 2009, however, Pierce-Smith grew tired of the “rubber-stamp nature” of the European Parliament and gained the nomination to be the Conservative candidate in the safe-seat of Chichester. Family Daniel Pierce-Jones is the oldest son of London Mayor and former councillor, Clyde Pierce (November 1940-Present), and his wife, Welsh actress and model, Mari Smith (April 1947-Present). His father, Clyde, has been sitting on the Greater London Council and its successive councils since 1973 and was a stockbroker in London prior to that. In 1980, Pierce was named leader of the London Conservatives and became close personal friends with the leader of the national party, Margaret Thatcher. This friendship allowed Daniel to become close with the Iron Lady during his childhood. In 1986, when the Greater London Council was dissolved, much to Pierce's chagrin, he continued to serve on the Inner-London Educational Authority. In 2008, he was elected Mayor and has been serving as such since. Pierce-Jones' parents married on October 15, 1970, had Daniel in 1973 and his brother, Francis Rhys, in 1975. Francis Rhys is currently a councillor in London, sitting as the deputy leader of the Conservatives. Education From an early age, Pierce-Jones showed great academic promise. His entry exam for Eton College was a smashing success leading to his earning a full King's Scholarship to attend the boys' college. At Eton, he earned five A levels (Economics, English, French, German and Politics) and two AS (Classics and History). During his time at Eton, Pierce-Smith not only excelled in the academic but also in the extra-curricular, boasting strong involvement in a number of societies and sporting groups such as the Politics Society, the Eton Society, and being House Captain for College House. In his senior year at the college, he was selected to play fly-half for the all-Etonian Rugby Union side. His excellent work ethic and gift for the academics gave him easy access to Oxford University where he would spend the next six years of his life. At Oxford, Pierce-Jones studied for a Bachelor's Degree in Modern History at Marlborough College. His reading at Oxford earned him a first-class honours degree in Modern History and he then pursued a Master's Degree, from Oriel College. He earned his master's with a thesis titled The Historical Importance of Central Banks and Sovereignty, a scathing and often direct lambasting of the European Union's common currency policy. Upon graduating with his master's, Daniel felt as though he needed a more marketable degree so he applied and was admitted to the prestigious Harvard University's law school where he read and earned an LL.B. Member of the European Parliament After working for the European Research Group alongside Daniel Hannan, Pierce-Jones felt he needed to make more of an impact so he managed to get on the Conservative party list in South-West England highly enough to be elected to the European Parliament. He served there from 2004-2009 and pursued a euro-sceptic platform. He opposed the Lisbon Treaty ardently and called on the EU to follow its own rules, along with Hannan, and hold a referendum in each state which sought to ratify the treaty. Member of Parliament In his time in the European Parliament, Pierce-Jones felt that he could serve a higher purpose in the UK Parliament and, when the seat of Chichester became open to a by-election with the announcement of Andrew Tyrie. He managed to gain the nomination of the Conservative Party to run in the constituency. He won, easily, and has been serving as the MP for Chichester ever since. Leader of the Opposition In 2010, after David Cameron had an accident and could no longer serve as Leader of the Opposition, Daniel Pierce-Jones was elected unopposed to lead the Conservative and Unionist Party.
