Okay I didnt quite know what to call this thread. As you know I've been trying to get down the basics of some coding languages. (I'll put a more detailed explanation as to why, later on in this post). In short, I've been doing it because I began working on my dad's site again, and I thought I'd create two platforms (flash and html). So once thats all complete, I'll be looking for a hosting service, and I might be able to score some hosting of my own (for creating the site). This wont be for a while, but with no previous knowledge of what to expect from a paid hosting, I'd like to ask a few questions. A friend is currently donating me some hosting, that uses ftp. Are the packages at Media Temple, all ftp, or does it vary? If it does vary, then Im expecting a geocities style file uploader, or something of the sort. If I dont get a domain name (I will, though this is just a scenario), will it be like a subdomain with http://something.mediatemple.com? I was experimenting with making custom error pages with my current hosting (a subdomain that I disguised with a dotTK domain name), and I remember reading somewhere that you must have a .com domain for it to work and it cant be a sub domain. Why is this? Okay thats pretty much all I want to know right now. -- [Learning coding lanugages- why?] All my design life, I've been using free hosts such as msn groups, geocities, freewebs, etc. Back then, scripting languages werent my highest priority so I used frontpage. I realised that if I ever want to be serious about doing this type of work, then I'll have to do it the right way. So lately I've been doing just that. Over the next week or so I'll be practicing making table-free layouts using CSS, and also learning about web standards. I have a week left of the holidays, and i spent the first week making little progress. yes, i do work in my holidays >.> . Im lookiing into getting a part time job soon so I can afford better equipment. |
