I was wondering, how many people here know anything about Japanese blades or sword arts such as Kendo, Iaido, Nitten ichi ryu, Gumdo (Korean sword art).

If anyone does want to know anything about swords or their arts, feel free to ask me. I know a great deal.

EDIT: Damn I think I posted in the wrong area. Sorry.

I know a good amount about swords, though most of it is through anime and such. I haven't really studied them extensively

sorry to say though that you will not learn much through anime.

They do somethings that just arent possible. Although, today I cut through a pine tree branch with my boken (wooden sword). Not exactly an easy task. Takes alot of concentration.

i dont know much about blades, or swords but just an interesting story, my grandfather fought for the US army, in a hand-to-hand fight with a japanese soldier (he was in a war, dunno which one, though) my grandfather got a bayonet from the japanese soldier he knocked out, no joking, true story, my parents have the bayonet in their closet... i've taken a look at it before, the blade is very dull but it can be shapened, its really cool having it, a little piece of history

EDIT: my grandfather was in WWII

one another note, my uncle had or has a sword, he let me hold it one time and it must've weighed 50 pounds, ok maybe not that much, lol, i was really young at the time, it was probably 20 pounds

I know alot about blades being used in the Medieval era throughout America. Just studying here and there and using the info for the various Medieval RP sites I create. I like to go for a realistic feel, so thats why I went into studying them...

So more around the Long Sword, Flamberge type things...

I highly doubt the sword weighed 20 pounds.

Even large swords such as a flamberge or zweihander only weighs about 7 - 14 pounds and these swords where extremely large, a small child would not be able to wield such a weapon.

The reason why they feel so heavy is because most of the weight is in the blade and the length of the blade also plays a factor in how the sword feels.

A traditional katana only weighs about 2- 4 lbs, again depending on the length of the blade, type of tsuka, tsuba, fuchi, etc.

me and some friends made kendo sticks out of a large bamboo tree he had in his backyard about a year ago. we would have little sparring matches with pillows tied around each other for protection, even though we had both taken Karate for 7+ years.

he also collected a lot of cool swords. He had num-chuks, swords, and those little scythe things, forgot their name

It depends on how the blade was forged, and what material it was made out of. Most preferred a light blade that was wieldable, thought it could be swung pretty fast and handled well, it was pretty weak compared to those with heavier weight which could cause more destructive damage paired with the strength of the wielder and the weight of the blade itself....

All in all, a blade can weigh around 20 lbs if need be....it all depends on the making of it... ^_^

a small blade weighing 20 pounds, whats it made from, lead, lol

about what i posted before, the sword might've weighed less than 15 pounds, but it was pretty heavy, had to have been 15 pounds, give or take a pound

my friend's family owns replicas of armour (helmet, legs, and body) from the movie, Gladiator, pretty cool, its in a display case mounted in a wall
