Lately I've been reading through a lot of things that relate to coding and its various languages. Aside from reaching a wider audience (including different browsers, operating systems, etc.), how else do you benefit from having a good programming backend on your site? Here's the concepts I've picked up from reading around. Could someone with skill in coding please tell me if I've understood correctly? [The below are languages I'm planning on learning] Html: Uses predefined tags to structure a page XML: Uses non-predefined tags. I understand that it isnt used to actually build a page, so what is it for? XHTML: A stable version of html that has become a web standard. PHP: used to communicate to mySQL databases. I also heard somewhere that you cannot 'view source' php pages, so as an alternative, could I use it to mask my messy coding? CSS: The equivelant of html with a larger learning curve. Unlike html, this language doesnt require tables to arrange a site (or something similar to that). [The below are languages which I'm unsure about, and also uncertain of whether I will pursue learning them] Pearl: No idea what this does. Cold Fusion: I heard this mentioned a few times before, sounds pretty flash. Javascript: I heard this was similar to Flash's Actionscript. C++: Ive also heard this a lot. Ive never been much of a coder. In my early days, instead of learning html, I stumbled upon microsoft frontpage x_x. Ive always gotten along with what I had with no troubles. In the long run, would poor coding, scripting, whatever, cause difficulties or problems? |

All I can say is about the last few things... Im not a coder AT ALL... Im more of a graphic/Flash/Website developer. I do know Microsoft page makes HTML worthless... I mean for creating websites.. u dont need HTML just use Frontpage. Now when it comes to skinning or HTML tricks such as font enlargment change of colors or backround..u should know some HTML. As For C++ I would advise you learn one coding at a time... C++ is very very very difficult. Although its a double edged sword, it can become a powerful tool. This is just my take on this subject. -Missingo |

XML is a backend programming languagfe. It helps to develope dynamic web pages for various purposes. Pearl isn't really a programming language. It's just a PHP extension. |

for anyone in this thread who wants to learn a programming language, I found www.w3schools.com a valuable resource. If I can get by with just flash and the embed into html feature, then I'll stick to that, but for functions such as email forms, or databases, I might require some PHP. |

everybody knows about w3schools. I started my coding lessons there, but it really isn't that good. It just teaches you the basics, then encourages you to 'mess around' with it. |

hmm i'd say it teaches you the basic principles. Im pleased to say that html has become second nature, theres just a few tags I dont remember and I sometimes have to take code from previous experiments. Ive been reading around on CSS stylesheets and I tried it a few times. For some reason, the CSS file doesnt always work. I got an example off a site, and I've learnt to reconstruct it myself (with a few prompts here and there), but it leaves out the colour of the boxes and such, even if I list it. The html or xhtml (i dont know if I can call it that), loads an external CSS style sheet. It works all fine when I have the details in the same file (style tags inside the head tags), but it only applies SOME of my changes (it sometimes doesnt apply text sizes, colours and box background colours.) Do CSS stylesheets have to be formatted in a certain way (ie. font details all grouped together, before the box details, etc.)? I'll play around with it a bit more. |

no, the styles can be formatted in any way. Send me the HTML file and the CSS file and I'll have a look at it an dhten tell you what's wrong. I've been using CSS for quite a while now, and am very experienced with it. If I had to guess, you have styles that aren't closed properly, or more then one different selector is applied to certain elements. |

heh not to worry, problem solved. I was spelling colour the australian way (colour) instead of color and it didnt pick it up. Still having difficulties getting all the boxes to be the right size. |
