the GFX scene

One thing I cant stand, GFX artists/designers. I've had a very bad experience with them.

But then again, I dont exactly know what the 'GFX scene' is all about. I'll explain my experience/understanding of it.


Jumping back into my past, I spent a good two or so years on MSN groups in RPGs (I got addicted to them). Graphic layouts were introduced and replaced the older html table styles (very basic stuff, but revolutionary at the time). So the ones who introduced these graphic layouts, labeled themselves as GFX artists. I never quite understood what that meant, I just assumed it was some l337 speak version of graphic artist. But this fad died, fast. Everywhere I turned there were the same layouts, with the 'designers' of them claiming that they were completely original, and unique. I'm out of practice with l337-like speak, but I think the term is 'trend-whore'. I always found the fads very ugly, and never bothered learning 'render-blending'. I think thats what its called. Its the grungy/abstract sort of background that pops up in almost every sig nowadays. Anyway, the ones who introduced MSN groups (as I knew it) to the world of GFX, claimed to be veterens. The only thing that set them apart were they put in tech-style effects all over the place. It was getting ridiculous. Nowadays you can compare them to current 'anime layouts'.

Then you had all those wanna-be web designers. I'll say this now- I'm not putting myself above anybody. I'm not a web designer. I'm not a graphic designer. I'm just some kid who can do things that other people my age arent capable of (in my school/group of friends that is). But all these would-be designers began popping up. They attempted to sell classic 'trend-whore' layouts, which anyone at the time could whip up. Having experienced a MUCH broader horizon than the GFX graffiti artist scene, I now truly have a bit of an understanding of whats professional. What will sell. What will be taken seriously. What the web should be like. Just think about it, a dentist's site with a classic grunge/tech layout. It makes me shiver.

Now I repeat, I'm not up to scratch with some of the terms I said, so if I sound like I'm all over the place, that'll be the reason.


Nosing around the GreyCobra forums, this little fire inside me rekindled. There was this post that was asking what should be in a portfolio. I'm not sure if things have changed since my experience with 'GFX artists'. I also dont know if I understood the post correctly. But from what I gather, people were suggesting to put signatures (pictures), abstract wallpapers, etc. into it. I dont know if its the same where everyone else lives, but even though I have extremely little experience with portfolios, somethings telling me that those few things wont get you a place in an art school, or whatever.

So that brings me back to the start. I find GFX artists annoying (as I know them) because they seem to cheapen the web and industry.


Please dont flame me. Like I mentioned in this post, I dont have a clear understanding of the 'GFX scene'. Any feedback would be appreciated, maybe share your experiences with this, or maybe post to help me update my knowledge.

Having only been active on more profession related forums, Its hard to make the transition to more digital-art related sites. I guess the two are different. One's more focussed on the business side, doing stuff for the clients, the others more focussed on fancy techniques.
