summer holidays have finally started. Well technically I should've still gone to school this week, but it really isnt worth it. I felt like talking about some things, in a way im trying to compose my thoughts. 128mb of ram is seriously killing me. That along with bad wireless internet reception just tops the cake. Its ridiculous, I cant get ANY work done in my room. Just trying to work with this puter makes me want to save up even more money. I'm going to have to tolerate my way outdated computer for about another year and a half. That reminds me, I finally got around to taking a look at the ibook at one of my local apple-resellers. That little dynamo could absolutely blitz my current toshiba satellite. I didnt really get much of a chance to explore it. Besides the screen looking a little washed out and the small screen space (12"), it is one pretty good notebook. I'd probably consider purchasing this over the powerbook because a) its much better value and b) It would easily be sufficient for my needs, I dont need a powerhouse. I started asking myself why I wanted/needed a website. I'm not quite prepared to do business as a designer just yet (dont have the equipment, programs and I want to refine my skills), so i guess it will be my personal portfolio. I really want it up before I start school again (7 weeks), so I can actually prove that i'm capable of using photoshop, flash and web technologies (I dont want to have to relearn it all). This brings me to progress in art. My style and skills have definately improved since I first arrived here. Back then I always thought my work was crap (which it was), which probably every creative mind experiences. I'm still looking into becomming proficient with photoshop, illustrator and flash, because im way out of practice. So all in all there are some clear set things I want to have achieved by the end of the holidays. Firstly, I want to have improved my graphics and web skills. Second, I want to have a finished portfolio ready with business cards too. Third, I want to save up for equipment and legit versions of my software (i'm also hoping to purchase some good audio software so I can make my own trance instead of tediously searching for good songs). Finally, I want to make my own wallpaper and icons, and art pieces to dispaly in my room. Also i'm thinking about asking for more shifts at work. The harder I work, the closer i'll get to finally living my dream. Well moving on, i was posting a bit of an argument on another forum which might make for some good reading and discussion-

May I suggest skipping the whole Apple idea for a while. Dell has some okay laptops that I believe start at around $350. they're much cheaper and will get the work done pretty well. It won't be as great an experience as you'd get with an iBook, but like I said, they get things done |

Personally I dont like Apple, I mean its great and all, but if I were to get one It would be to focus on my Music Engineering(I plan to study as a producer and Audio/ digital arts.) Apple is great for that, but fore desiging you can use anything with good memory. I had a very outdated vio that only had 250mb and I had Dreamweaver, Flash, Photoshop, and the full Corel graphics suit, and it worked fine. I got what I wanted done. So dont focus on going to big, try to go for affordable, I know apple is great and stuff...but my friend, when you dont have money, you got to go for whats in your best interest and that way youll have enough to buy legit programs aswell. by the way, what legit programs do you need, cause since me and Max work together, we both bought have a wireless desktop in my house and we can work from our labtops into that comp and thats how we do our work. So I have leftoever legit verions of programs, I believe I have Flash MX, and Photo Shop CS. later -Cisco |

All right, here's my take on the whole laptop situation, since we all have different opinions on it. I've done a lot of research on this (because a good notebook is important) and I've come up with a pretty solid list. Best for Web Design (Coding, Photoshop, Flash) - an Apple (http://apple.com) PowerBook is probably going to be your best choice for this type of work. An iBook is also a good altenrative if your budget's a little tight. Apple computer's have super fast G5 processors that can handle multiple large file movement all at once. You also get a higher display of pixels per inch meaning you can work in larger canvases and see more than the average Windows designer. Best for General Use - pretty much any medium quality notebook will do when it comes to general web surfing. This means email applications, browsers, widgets, and maybe some small graphics programs. I suggest one of the following. Dell (http://dell.com) Sony Vaio (http://sony.com) or an HP (http://hp.com) Best for Streaming Media (gaming, videos, audio, 3D rendering) - there are two great, but not very affordable options for this field. The first is Alienware (http://alienware.com). They have some great products with insane graphics cards and processors perfect for this type of media. The next is VoodooPX (http://voodoopc.com). VoodooPC, while extremely expensive (almost $4000), has some of the best notebooks in the world. They are perfect for gaming, 3D rendering, video and audio too. They come with top of the line graphics and sound cards and they just look cool too. |

Well I have a Toshiba Satellite pentium M(the same one that Max got)... and its brand new, it just came out this year I believe, and I can do all those things...I can use all my designer programs at the same time, and listen to music while surfing the net....and it works quick... I payed 1,500$ for it. |

Different people, different needs. This will be a long-term investment. Like I said earlier, I'm looking into improving my work because its currently very uninspired and all over the place. I dont want to freelance anytime soon because I dont want to be pushing terrible looking work out into clients' hands. The fact that we're all creative minds but can never agree on each other's work is definately telling me something. Because of this, i'm not concerned about waiting around a little longer and working a bit harder. It gives me a lot more time to refine my work before I consider myself a designer. I'd rather a highly-priced notebook over some cheap one any day. Even then the mac line is still fairly well priced. All in all i'm in no rush to get a new notebook or software. By the time I save up, apple may have released the mactel line, which would be more worth it. |

I have to agree.... we should always ask ourselves that question, what makes us a designer? I know for sure I have ALOT more to learn, I have absolutely no knowledge code except for a tiny bit of HTML and some more of actionscript.. but in other words I suck, I dont know how to use CSS stylesheets at all...But you know Bird-E, I do it for the love of it, even though I spend hours and hours on the comp trying to come up with stuff, I enjoy it. Its the same thing I tell Max, even though he might not be able to come up with something with time, hell get it. to gain something attractive and promising is the most difficult thing out there...to be able to make the whole design, warm, or professional is quite the task. Especially for new designers. Dont feel discouraged or anything, just do what you said, keep trying and slowly but surely youll do it... |
