*sigh*

When I first tasted the sweet sweet freedom of the holidays, I saw a huge stretch ahead of me. I had a highway of freetime. I made a todo list, and I wrote down some things I wanted to have achieved by the end of the holidays. But alas, procrastination got the better of me. So in the rough total of seven weeks, I have only just managed to get my site ready. And so the holidays come to a close.

Stage 1 is complete, on to stage 2. There are a total of five stages. I know one thing though, I will now have a lot of work cut out for me, so that means I can now officially say that I actually do something in my spare time.

Gone are the days when I would shrug after being asked 'what did you get up to on the weekend?'.

. ProjectHYBRID, pushing the pixel.

I managed to get a basic structure of my html site up this week, but I'm going to rework it. I still need StudioHybrid up as quick as I can, for it is the 'hard evidence' that shows merely a taste of what I can do.

ProjectHYBRID has evolved in concept. Once a codename for StudioHybrid, its now more sophisticated and confidential. It plays a much larger part in my new identity.

As such the remaining 4 stages are somewhat top secret. I know that sounds really cheesy, but the fact is that if I elaborate at this point in time, it may create expectations, or assumptions, some of which may not end up being fulfilled. The point is, i've grown as a designer. No one (except possibly my close friend in rl) is aware what I am capable of. Seen my work in the past? Had a glimpse of my work recently? One design does not show the true extent of one's ability, and this definately holds true to me.

Its a way of life, its what I do, ProjectHYBRID.

[sorry if I come off as seeming arrogant in this post, but I couldnt find a better way to describe it]

Back in the works. Redesign concept of studiohybrid is complete, but im going to allow for a couple of days to see if I can refine it more.

I'll probably start off the new html structure from scratch, but use the old one for reference. Either way, its gonna be a busy week.

Edit: Getting back to my roots, a number of things have been putting me off my internet life. May not be able to post as much as id like to.

I look forward to seeing htis, and cant wait for a final release. I actually have a lot of business related things that I've been working on. First off, I've just begun working on two new client websites, and I'm about to enter a partnership with a good friend, whow ill be redirecting all of his design work to me. he'll handle the hosting and server management aspect of it, and I'll create the websites. Our fees begin at $4K per website, and we actually have 15 clients lined up already

man, things are sounding really good for you.

I'm really trying to get my act together. I really want to start freelancing soon. Cant do that without a solid portfolio (especially since i dont have any degree or qualification). Also dont want to start till I purchase legit software and a new computer. Yea... still the same deal. Stuck in the same rut. Pushing the same pixel.

I thought charging $1-2k was expensive for a website, but Im beginning to see how valuable a designer's skills are. I guess if you have enough confidence in your work, theres no real limit as to what you can achieve.

No fear.

Look, if anyone has any ideas how I can earn money (borrow from a bank, parents, whatever), id like to hear it. Heh.

A possible opportunity has risen. I still remember your advice from last time zeerus (approach my parents as a business man, and treat the money as an asset, not a toy). My birthday is coming up. Asking for a new computer and software totaling around 4 grand is a bit of an ask. I currently have around $1200 AUD saved up from work. I thought, maybe I could put that money towards my equipment, and ask my parents to pay for the rest. It doesnt stop there. As/if I get more jobs/money, I'll gradually pay them back all but $100. So in concept, i'm simply asking for a favour and $100 for my birthday.

By contributing all my savings so far, I'm telling them that i'm dead serious.

I dunno, I think I said this before, but I dont want to feel pressured to design, just for the money (ie. paying back a loan or my parents). id much rather move at my own pace (especially because im just beginning). Waiting it out isnt really desirable. I dont necessarily want to start earning money (im not greedy), I just want to go legit, and start making a name for myself.

the main reason we charge so much is because most of our clients are located in the Orlando/Tampa part of Lakeland, where a lot of big business' reside. That's just the average price around there.

Hmm fair enough. Have you ever had trouble convincing clients with your previous costs/quotes (however much that was?)? I mean, who's to say that your work isnt as good as any other designer's, just because of your age?

Thats one thing im concerned about. I mean, I'm all for confidence in your skills, but if i were doing business, i wouldnt want to seem like some greedy kid who is charging obnoxiously high amounts. Present yourself as a businessman and they'll treat you as one, I know. but have you ever had any people 'questioning' your abilities or the prices you charge for your services?

i just had a very interesting conference call with two other designers. one is a good friend of mine and the other is a designer named William something or other. He owns a large company with projects that cost up to six million dollars. he actually offered Timur and myself jobs with his company at $400 a week, but the skills he required were way over our heads. my point is, different people charge different prices, you just have to be comfortable with your skills

Well, I think as far as pricing goes, you should just charge what you feel your designs are worth. Pretty simple? If your charing a client 4K a website....it better be bad a** website... because the customer will think to him/herself "I paid good money for this website, I hope to get my moneys worth". I have had clients (in database work) that have actually paid 4-6 thousand dollars for the most simplest peice of crap ever, not to mention there site is cheesy. When I sat to speak with them and I told them my price: (500$..it wasnt really a big job) they felt so ripped off by the other guy. I had to re-assemble the whole database and CMR contacts as well. That other dude must have been some kid who read an introduction for some database book and thought he was ready to make money. Overall my point is simple, just ask your self how much your skills are worth?

This has a lot to do with confidence in your skills, but it also ties in with undercharging. Finally putting all the theory i've picked up to the test. Now not everyone charges the same amount, so if those clients require more work, they're gonna be expecting everyone to charge the amount you did.

I believe we must be fair in pricing, but being fair can be detrimental to the 'standard' of your work.

Myself and my friend Timur (boybeans) have spoken with a lot of different designers recently about pricing, and we've gathered a good amount of info. Again, it all comes back to your skill level and the client.
