WIFI scanning

So my dad and I went to a bike shop to get some pedals for my bike. I thought to myself, "What a perfect time to look for some unsecured wireless networks." Before we left I grabbed my laptop and, while cruising through town, refreshed the wireless networks list a couple times. Now before I go any further with my story let me give you a description of the town I live in, in one word: small. I immediately picked up 6 wireless networks coming into downtown. I caught roughly about 25 wireless networks, 15 of which were unsecured and anyone could connect. We only went about 4 miles and hit about 15 unsecured wireless networks! I know enough about computers and industry to know that companies don't like people who leech off of the companies bandwidth. Most of the companies networks were secured with either WPA or WEP however most of the home networks are left wide open. What I did, scanning for wireless networks is perfectly legal, however, connecting to wireless networks is a different story, but I say if the person or company who setup the network can't properly secure a router with WEP or WPA then that person shouldn't use a computer. I mean, how hard is it, typing in a password so that your network is secure?

Anyone try WIFI scanning or driving around in a car looking for unsecured wireless networks?
