England in the High Middle Ages -King John put his seal on the Manga Carta in 1215. -The Angles and Saxons invaded England in the 5th century. The Norman Conquest -On October 14th,1066, William of Normandy and his soldiers defeated King Harold at the Battle of Hastings. -William took a census, known as the Domesday Book. Henry II -Power of English momarch enlarged from 1154 to 1189. -Throughout England, royal courts were found creating the common law. -Thomas a becket, an archbishop of Canterbury had the highest rank of any English cleric. He claimed that only the Roman Catholic Church could try clerics in courts. The Magna Carta and the First Parliament -John put his seal on the document of rights called the Magna Carta, or Great Charter. -In the 13th century, Edward I created the English parliament. -The Parliament was made of two knights from every county, two people from every town, and all of the nobles and bishops throughout England. The French Kingdom -In 843, the Ccarolingian Empire was divided into three sections. -King philip Augustus, ruled from 1180 until 1223, turning the point for growth of the French monarchy. -Philip IV separated the French parliament into three estates: the nobles, clergy, and everyone else. The first meeting was held in 1302. The Holy Roman Empire -Best known Saxon king of Germany was Otto I. -Otto I was crowned emperor of the Romans in 962. Struggles of in Italy -Fredrick I and Fredrick II wanted to build a strong German kingdom. -Fredrick's attempt to conquer northern Italy started severe problems. The Pope opposed him. -The Pope and local states defeated Fredrick I's forces in 1176. Effect on the Empire -German emperors began spending time with Italy and leaving Germany to powerful lords. -The lords wouldn't give up this power when the kings returned, so after losing Italy, German emperors had no real power. Central and Eastern Europe -The Slavic people move out of central Europe and split into three groups: western, eastern, and southern Slavs. -Western Slavs formed Polish and bohemian kingdoms. They were later converted to Christianity by the Roman Catholic Church. -Southern and Eastern Slavs converted to Orthodox Christianity by two Byzantine missionaries. The Developement of Russia -The Eastern Slavic people settled in Ukraine and Russia. -They encountered Swedish Vikings, known as the Rus, which is where Russia got its name. Kievan Rus -Oleg, a Viking leader, settled Kiev in the early tenth century. His successors enlarged Kiev to include the area between the Baltic and Black Seas. -Viking leaders were encouraged to marry Slavic wives, assiilating them into the Slavic population. Mongol Rule -Mongols conquered russia in the thirteenth century, they forced Russian princes to pay tribute to them. -Alexander Vevsky defeated an invading German army in 1242. -The khan rewarded Alexander with the title grand-prince.
