GLOBAL SECURITY : Following this year's defeat of the Tamil rebels, ending a quarter-century civil war, the country is now restarting itself. Matters of administration, reconstruction, and political "normalisation” have now all become more and more prevalent with no potential political solutions or ways for the return of democracy to occur.

GLOBAL ECONOMICS: Sri Lanka’s Central Bank plans to spur economic growth by relaxing control of foreign exchange rules. Sri Lanka's most dynamic sectors are now food processing, textiles and apparel, food and beverages, port construction, telecommunications, and insurance and banking. They have a pretty statist economic approach; steering investment to disadvantaged areas, developing small and medium enterprises, promoting agriculture, and expanding the already enormous civil service are parts of their plan. Reducing poverty is part of the big picture. Funding projects after the civil war have proved to be a problem; however, Sri Lanka’s market is going well, with official foreign reserves improving to more than $5 billion by November 2009.

HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES:
degree of risk for infectious diseases: high
food or waterborne diseases: bacterial diarrhea and hepatitis A
vectorborne disease: dengue fever and chikungunya
water contact disease: leptospirosis
animal contact disease: rabies (2009)
People living with HIV/AIDS: 3800 estimated
Deaths from HIV/AIDS: fewer than 200
Infant mortality rate total: 18.14 deaths/1,000 live births

ENVIRONMENTAL:
Current issues: deforestation; soil erosion; wildlife populations threatened by poaching and urbanization; coastal degradation from mining activities and increased pollution; freshwater resources being polluted by industrial wastes and sewage runoff; waste disposal; air pollution in Colombo

HUMAN RIGHTS:
--Many specific instances with torture/abuse of Tamils in 26 year long civil war.
--Guilt of War Criminals
