What are resolutions and why do we have to write them?

So you guys have just finished writing position papers which (hopefully) have given you some background on a specific topic that you will be discussing at the conference. Now, we can sit around and discuss problems all day long, but what United Nation delegates really congregate to do is discuss solutions. These solutions are presented in the form of RESOLUTIONS. Therefore, resolutions are potential solutions to the problems outlined in your position paper. Keep in mind that you are a delegate representing a country and so the solutions you propose should reflect the attitudes and endorsements of your country.

How do I write a passing resolution?
Begin by describing the severity of the problem you are trying to mitigate or solve. How many people have been affected by this issue? How does this issue affect our daily lives? Why is it imperative we do something now as opposed to in fifty years? What has the UN done in the past regarding this issue? Why do we need to do more? etc. Please use statistics. Use this space to set the reader up for your proposal. Remember that Preambulatory clauses cannot be amended at the conference.

Operative clauses (what follow your Preambulatory clauses) are specific policies or recommended courses of action. Please be specific and realistic. Talk about where you will get your funding, how your plan is to be implemented (which body of the UN will manage it?) in addition to the plan itself. This is more than just "we should give food to starving children", but HOW we are going to do that with the limitations of the real world.

For a comprehensive list of approved Preambulatory and Operative clauses go here.

How do I format my resolution?
1. Have a heading
Quote:

Committee:
Subject:
Proposed by:

2. Address your resolution to the General Assembly
Quote:

The General Assembly,

3. Italicize Preambulatory Clauses
4. End Preambulatory Clauses with a comma
5. Underline Operative Clauses
6. End Operative Clauses with a semicolon
7. Number each line in your resolution 1), 2), 3)...etc.
8. End the resolution with a period

Why are they so picky about the formatting?
How would you like it if you spent hours every day looking at hundreds of resolutions that were all organized and formatted differently? Someone would probably lose it and who knows what would happen. Just do it. Tell yourself it's for the greater good. ;)

Most likely, when you post your resolution to be graded by your ambassadors your formatting will disappear. Do not panic. When you submit your resolutions to the conference you will do so in plain text, so don't worry too much about italicizing and underlining. However you still must follow the other requirements.
