Committee: Human Rights Committee (3B) Topic: Access to Information Country: Republic of Iraq 1.General Assembly, 2.2.THE HUMAN RIGHTS COMMITTEE 3.3. Concerned with the lack of access to information in Iraq, 4.Taking note of the reasons that are blocking access to information that include: 5. a. instability, 6. b. poverty, 7. c. lack of education 8. d. government censorship, 9. e. inter-governmental strife, 10.Noting with mixed feelings that the Iraqi government has yet to combat this problem, 11.Deeply concerned that uneducated citizens do not realized when their rights are breached, 12.Recognizing that transparency and access to information in of itself is the concern, 13.of sovereign countries, not so much as outside parties, 14.Bearing in mind that a lack of access to information can be found in most 3rd world countries 15.and not as often in most developed countries, 16.Aware that a lack of information access can cause many problems that would include: 17. A. governmental corruption, 18. B. inability of people to participate in matters concerning their society, 19. C. lack of understanding of situations going on around them, 20. D. ignorance of their rights, 21. E. destroys the point of democracy, 22.Taking into account that to fix this problem, not much can be done except to combat the root 23.cause of the issue, 24.Believing that global action currently being taken is insufficient, 25.Affirming individual nations recognize the best course of action for their people, 26.Encourages sovereign nations to take initiatives to institute laws that allows for more governmental transparency; 27.Recommends the main course of action taken to include: 28. a. the establishment of more educational institutions within accessibility of all citizens; 29. b. the creation, implementation, and enforcement of looser censorship laws and protocols 30.that allow for more governmental transparency; 31. c. reorganization of some aspects of society in order for the poor to assimilate to higher 32.living standards; 33. d. construction of power lines; 34. e. erection public centers in which citizens can learn what is occurring within their country 35.and within the world; 36. f. infrastructural work in order to lessen instability; 37. g. governmental allocation of funds to achieve all said actions 38.Further requests that countries do yearly maintenance checks of their government in which the 39.following is fixed and or checked for: 40. a. government agents withholding information that could be potentially slanderous 41.to themselves, but vital for citizens to know; 42. b. negotiate with the members of internal strife as to reach a joint agreement in which 43.everyone is satisfied rather than causing more governmental instability; 44. c. the leaders of the country themselves report back to the people the progress they’ve 45.made 46.Further invites countries to take national interest in access to information and to make sure the people 47.are well educated in the topic; 48.Designates that should all countries take steps to make sure their countrymen are well educated 49.in the activities of their government and well as news of what is going on; 50.Invites countries to fix the root causes of a lack of access to information.
