Public perception, hardware limitations, hype....; Popularity does not equal quality?

I have been, and remain, non-sequitur
I thought I'd start a discussion on the thing that my site is all about, which also happens to be the thing I'm most interested in discussion. No, not advocacy. Over the years I've heard hype and slander, advertising and libel, over which console in any given generation was the "best", because, you know there must be a "best" console, meaning that the other must be the worst ever, don't you?
Most of the often repeated beliefs about any given Sega console that I've heard are answered on my site as best as I've been able to find an answer. Beliefs like, the Sega Master System didn't have any good games, the Genesis was "dated" compared to the Snes, the Genesis didn't have *nearly* as good audio as the Snes did, the Snes *always* had tons more colors on screen than the Genesis, *millions* of people were ripped off by Sega with the Sega CD and 32X add-ons, the Saturn's 3D was tossed in at the last minute in a panic upon Sony's triumphant arrival on the scene, the Saturn didn't have any good games, the Dreamcast was vastly inferior to the PS2 in hardware and software, the Dreamcast failed because the public vehemently hated and distrusted them because of their past hardware failures, and more are all things that I like to try to figure out.
Seeing as though I owned and enjoyed each of the consoles spoken negatively about in the above sentence, I've always been curious what hype or the other these people swallowed whole to believe these things so thoroughly. Anyway, for the sake of discussion, I'd like to know what anybody else out there thinks about any popular saying they've heard about one of the older Sega consoles.

What always killed me were the SMS-naysayers. Like most kids, I had played the NES...so I wanted the NES...hadn't really ever even heard of the SMS until it was too late. At one point, a buddy of mine had one, let me borrow it and about 30 games for around a month. I was *blown* back. I couldn't believe how good some of the games were, and I'd *never* heard of any of them. I think it was after that that I RAN out of the house to go get a Power Base Converter. I'm still upset that you can't use the PBC with the 32X...but I'm considering getting an SMS at some point down the line anyway...or I may just stick with the DC SMS emu...I don't know. :)

When I was a kid, I asked my parents for a SMS for christmas, only because my best friend had one and wanted him to borrow me some games. But my parents suprised me with a megadrive (genesis) and my friend went all jealous on me. But for a bigger suprise most of the kids in my school had megadrives.
Few years later, I had the chance to buy a SNES, but I declined, because I didn't know anybody that had one to borrow me games.
Point of the story: when you're a kid, sometimes it doesn't matter if things are better than others, you just want to keep up with your friends.

Hehhehe, I can dig it. My dad got me a Genesis one year...and my God, I *still* believe it's the best gift I've EVER received. :)
