a SEGA RACING TIMES column 1995. A time of transition. The 16-bit era was ending and systems such as Jaguar, 3DO,Saturn and the mysterious Sony Playstation poised to fight for the future. This battle was not fought by hardware alone... RALLY BATTLE '95 *dramatic music*>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>vrooooooommmm!!!!>>>>>>>>>>>> The "warriors"- Super Drift Out- An arcade bred rally racer made by Visco. It was unleashed on the Super Famicon System (SNES) in February of 1995. It featured 5 WRC racing cars, a Suzuki Vivio practice car and a track editor. Based on the 1994 FIA WRC season the game has 8 stages and 19 tracks. The gameplay is classic. The racing is all top down view. The co-driver's directions are given via pop up arrows that prepare the driver for the next turns or jumps. The car only has two buttons- accelerator and brake-reverse. Given the fast paced tracks it works very well. Feathering the gas, brake tapping and a lot of easy power slides give the player all the tools they need. Super Driftout played to all the consoles strengths with quick rotation effects plus basic but effective music and sound. It was also an importer's dream with all English text and menus. As 1995 came to close Super Drift Out was easily the best home rally game going. Then... On December 28th and 29th of 1995 Sega released Sega Rally Championships in the US and Japan for its latest console, the Sega Saturn. Sega Rally Championships- Also bred out of the arcades SRC was ported over by the legendary AM3 team. Unlike the rather disappointing Daytona USA, it offered stunning graphics and FLAWLESS gameplay. People couldn't stop playing it in fact. The game only offered two cars and three tracks with one bonus car and track. Still people played on to shave seconds off their best lap times, to have better runs than their friends and to enjoy the dazzling car handling.Afterward you could sit back and watch the dramatic replays. Seeing the animals in the Desert Course is good for a smile from me. SRC wasn't an official WRC game but they did get permission from Lancia and Toyota to use their WRC cars. The events and tracks were Sega homebrew but they were awesome so no one complained. The Saturn hosted other racing games in its career but this was arguably the best. Scores- Super Drift Out 14/22 Sega Rally Championships 16/22 Both of these are still very good games today. But Sega Rally set a new standard in home racing that was unmatched until the late 90s by games like Colin McRae Rally, Rally Cross 2 and V-Rally 2. Even now with its amazing control and endless playability it has something to teach. Make a easy long right or a hard left baby, just drive out and play these games. Race safe,16bit PS Bits- I never use the manual transmission in Sega Rally :P Best Desert Course Lap Time- Lancia Stratos 53"42 -no cheats- I just tried my best :) |

Actually, Sega Rally was an AM3 game.
:) SR really is the king...nothing got close to it. Even hardcore Sony-fan magazines like Next Generation gave the closest thing to it, Sony's Rally Cross, a comment of "a nice *alternative* to Sega Rally.". ;) As for the transmission, I'm exactly the opposite...I *never* use manual...just can't handle it. Love that Celica though... :) Bel |

Thanks for the correction! Sega Rally is pretty awesome. Drift Out is neat too with the top down 2D racing. I think Rally Cross is far too slow and bouncy to be compared to SR. Also some modes in the game caused the graphics to glitch, turning your car into pixelated fuzz. The track design isn't close in terms of quality either. It had mud and big air in places but passing, forget about it. Rally Cross 2 has more balance. Still quite different from SR tho' WRC Arcade released in 2002 for ps1 has some SR qualities in terms of forgiving physics but the tracks are more like V-Rally and CMR. Soon I'll be getting Rally de Europe for ps1. I'm curious about that one... Time to break away from the gravel go Super Biking:) Is TT Manx framey-fast too? |

Manx TT is fucking great, excellent framerate. The same team that did the bad-ass Daytona CCE did this conversion, and you can really tell. It's, by far, the best motocycle racing game I've ever played(though the Moto Racer series does get close at times). Bel |

Manx is OK. Perhaps I need to practice more. The AI was engaging but the game doesn't have the sizzle of Daytona USA CCE. I was amazed I could ram a wall with a motorbike and stay stapled to the thing. Other recent Saturn game tried- Black Dawn. An attack helicopter game with easy controls and lots to destroy. Sadly I can't send a lock-on missile into the 2 biggest enemies, pop-up and draw in. The game runs slowly enough it isn't a major problem but it took me 5 minutes to see my LZ to drop the hostages!!! Still it shows promise. It isn't as smooth and pretty as Gungriffon or Gundam Gaiden Trilogy. Blowing up shit is always satisfying tho' :) |
